How a drone roof survey works in Hassocks

Neighbours’ privacy matters on every flight. The camera stays on your roof, not on neighbouring homes and gardens. If your roof is shared, a word with next door beforehand helps. We inspect only what the owner has asked us to. Each flight is kept short and stays focused on the roof we’re there to survey. If you’re worried about debris building up in hidden gutters and flat roofs on upper floors that hold water, we can find out what’s behind it.

Older cottages and houses around Hassocks may have little insulation, and some have extensions with their own roofs. Thermal patterns and close-up photos together give a fuller picture of the roof. Findings are checked with moisture readings where needed. Calm, dry weather suits both methods, so the date is set with the forecast in mind.

Report times depend on the survey you book: the Basic Survey within 48 hours, the Standard Survey in 24 to 48 hours and the Premium Survey on the same day.

What we look for on each type of roof

Valleys and parapet gutters

A butterfly roof drains to a central valley gutter. You can’t see it from the street at all, but it is plain to see from the air.

Large commercial roofs

Cement sheet roofs on buildings from before 2000 may contain asbestos. We flag it in the report and recommend a specialist asbestos surveyor.

Hassocks questions

How do I find out if my home in Hassocks is listed?

Historic England’s list shows listed buildings, and the local council can tell you about conservation areas. If a home is listed, changes that affect its special interest need listed building consent, and in a conservation area re-roofing in different materials may need permission.

Can you fly a drone over a roof in Hassocks?

The answer turns on the exact location and the conditions on the day. Before any flight, we check the Drone Safety Map for airspace restrictions, including zones around airports and prisons. A small drone can’t fly safely in high wind or heavy rain.

What happens next?

You receive the written report by email, with photographs and recommendations. You can use it to talk to a seller, an insurer, a roofer or a managing agent, whichever applies.

Will you check the loft?

If the survey needs it and the roof space can be reached safely, yes. A clear path to the hatch helps, and if the loft can’t be reached safely, the report says so.

How long will you be at the property?

Expect it to take roughly 1–2 hours at most homes, and longer for a large or complex roof. You’ll then get the report by email, on the timescale of your package.

How do I book a survey in Hassocks?

To book, phone 07833 053749 or drop us an email with the address, the type of property and what’s prompted the survey. We’ll confirm the price and find a day that suits.

Do I have to be there for the survey?

If the survey includes the loft or the inside of the building, someone needs to let us in. We’ll talk about access when booking.

Drone roof surveys around Hassocks

Many older homes in Sussex have handmade clay tiles and tile-hung walls. Some old buildings in Sussex have Horsham stone slab roofs. A drone or thermal camera adds most on the steep, tall and hidden parts of roofs like these. Before planning roof work on an older home, find out whether it’s listed or in a conservation area. Listed building consent covers changes to a listed building’s special interest, and an Article 4 direction can bring extra controls in a conservation area.

For site and facilities teams at buildings like Hassocks Infant School, big roofs are where aerial photos and thermal images show the most at once.

Common roof problems in Hassocks

Steep and tall roofs are hard to inspect safely. Three-storey houses, blocks of flats and tall commercial buildings are common examples. We fly from the ground and bring the camera close to the roof.

Most people get in touch after spotting one of these:

  • Ridge pieces that have lifted
  • Debris building up in hidden gutters
  • Eroded pointing on a chimney stack
  • Lead work pulling away at abutments

The streets around a church such as St Francis of Assisi are often among the oldest in a place, and if you own one of the older houses nearby, steep roofs, tall chimneys and hidden valleys can be hard to see from ground level, and that’s where a view by drone or thermal camera helps.

Choosing a roof surveyor

  • What insurance they carry
  • Whether any drone flown is registered with the CAA
  • Will they check the loft as well as the outside?
  • Their report turnaround times

What a good roof survey covers

What this survey can’t tell you

Some things cannot be seen without opening up the roof, so a survey has limits:

  • Flights in strong wind or heavy rain
  • A flight where airspace permission is refused
  • Structural calculations (that is a structural engineer’s job)

If you’re not sure which survey you need, phone 07833 053749 or send us an email and we’ll give you a straight answer. What our survey covers.

What this survey covers

  • Flat roofs on upper floors
  • Valleys and parapet gutters
  • Chimney stacks
  • Large and complex roofs
  • Tall and steep roofs
  • Fragile roofs

For landlords and managing agents

Businesses and commercial landlords can book us too. Larger roofs take longer, so they’re priced to suit.

Landlords and agents in Hassocks book surveys as well as homeowners. A written report with photos gives you a clear record of the roof, useful for planning maintenance.

What a survey costs

Survey packages start from £150, including VAT. The price for your roof depends on:

  • The shape of the roof and its details
  • The size of the roof
  • Any need for thermal images or a drone flight
  • Extensions, dormers and garages with roofs of their own

Bigger, taller and commercial roofs take more time to survey, so they’re priced to match. The price is confirmed before you book.

Booking your survey

You do not need to know any roofing terms. Just let us know:

  • Where any leaks, stains or damp patches show inside
  • Pictures of the roof from a safe spot, if you have them
  • Where the property is, with the postcode
  • Any deadline, such as an exchange date

Every survey is priced before it is booked, so you know where you stand. Our price is from £400, including VAT. To book, ring 07833 053749 or send us an email.

What happens on the day

We work from the outside in: first the slopes, edges and gutters from every safe viewpoint, then the roof space where it can be reached. In total, it takes roughly 1–2 hours at a house, including the airspace and weather checks before take-off. With a bit of garden around a house, as there frequently is around Hassocks, the roof can be viewed from several angles. Let us know if any side is fenced off or hard to reach. Inside, the loft is checked where it can be reached safely.

  1. First, we check whether a drone is the right tool.
  2. A visit is booked for a weekday, Saturday or Sunday, weather permitting.
  3. Aerial photos are taken of your roof only, not the neighbours’.
  4. Where there’s safe access, we check the loft as well.
  5. Everything is written up, with the aerial photos and our advice.

How to prepare

  • If you’re buying, let the agent know when we’re coming
  • Move anything stored under the loft hatch
  • Let us know where we can park nearby
