Thermal roof surveys for homes and businesses in Hersden
What a thermal camera can show depends a lot on the weather. It is useful to have a sunny day beforehand, a dry surface and calm air. Rain, a strong wind or heavy cloud can make the images less clear. We talk through the forecast as you book, and the report explains how the conditions on the day affected the results. We survey loft conversions, ceilings below the roof and commercial roofs, and the problems we’re asked to look at most are moisture around outlets and upstands and damp where roofs meet walls and chimneys.
Even in a smaller place like Hersden, there may be airfields or restrictions nearby, so every drone flight starts with a check of the Drone Safety Map. Exposed sites can be windy, and a small drone cannot fly safely in strong wind, while thermal imaging also works best with little wind. Each flight is planned with neighbours’ privacy in mind, as well as the airspace and the wind.
Pictures do a lot of the work in our reports, so you can see each defect rather than just read about it. If something couldn’t be seen safely, the report is clear about it.

How it works
The visit has one job: to look at the roof as closely as is safe and record what we find. Notes and photographs go into the written report. It typically takes about one to two hours for most homes, plus time to check any thermal findings with moisture readings. Homes around Hersden often have gardens on more than one side, which gives us room to step back and see the roof. Let us know if any side is fenced off or hard to reach. The loft, where there’s safe access, completes the picture.
- First we discuss the roof, any damp and the forecast for the visit.
- The roof is inspected visually from safe positions.
- We take thermal images of the roof and of the loft where we can reach it.
- Patterns that stand out are checked with moisture readings.
- The report pairs each thermal image with a photo and explains what it suggests.
How to prepare
- Check we can get to the back of the property
- Mention any parking restrictions on your street

Tips from our surveys
These tips come from what we see on roofs every week:
- Remember the conditions on the day affect the results
- Keep outlets and gutters clear to stop water sitting
- Note where damp appears and after what weather
- Clear a path to the loft hatch before we arrive
You also get an in-person consultation with a Premium Survey, giving you the chance to talk through the images and findings. There is a 12-month follow-up too.
Keep outlets and gutters clear so water drains off the roof quickly. The less water sits, the less can find its way beneath.
Do you need a thermal roof survey in Hersden?
Some owners book because the rooms under the roof feel cold. Missing or slipped insulation can stand out as temperature differences, particularly when there is a clear difference between inside and outside.
Most people get in touch after spotting one of these:
- Missing or slipped insulation
- Possible trapped moisture under a flat roof covering
- Cold areas below the roof
- Leaks that are hard to trace
If you look after a building such as Hersden Village Primary School, big roofs are where photos from the air and thermal images show the most at once.
Before booking any roof surveyor
- Will they check the loft as well as the outside?
- Their report turnaround times
- Whether you get a written report with photos
- Their track record with similar roofs

Drones, thermal imaging and Hersden roofs
Hersden is within about 5 miles of the coast, and wind off the sea can be strong. Calm, dry conditions after a sunny day suit thermal imaging best, so the visit is planned around the forecast. Many older homes in Kent have handmade clay tiles, including Kent peg tiles held by pegs through two holes, and tile-hanging on their upper walls. Oast houses and timber-framed Wealden hall houses are part of the county’s older buildings too. A drone or thermal camera adds most on the steep, tall and hidden parts of roofs like these.
For an older house near a landmark like Church of All Saints, steep roofs, tall chimneys and hidden valleys can be hard to see from the ground, and that’s where a view from above or with a thermal imager helps.

Different roofs, different checks
Loft insulation
Loft insulation is easily disturbed when people store things or run cables. Thermal images can show where it has been pushed aside.
Pitched slate and tile roofs
Even on pitched roofs, the camera can point to heat loss and some damp. We explain what can and can’t be read from them.
How we price thermal roof surveys
Not every roof costs the same to survey, for these reasons:
- Features like valleys, chimneys, dormers and parapets
- Roof area
- Extra roofs, like extensions, dormers or garages
- House, block, shop or office
Thermal imaging and drone inspection (where it applies) come with the Premium Survey, which starts from £400, including VAT. We will tell you which package suits the questions you have.

Here’s what helps us most when you contact us:

Questions from Hersden
Is my home in Hersden listed or in a conservation area?
Start with Historic England’s list for listing and your council for conservation areas. Either can affect what roof work is allowed, so it is worth checking before planning any.
Is Hersden in the area you cover?
Yes, Hersden is one of the places we work. Every survey there gets the same written report with photos.
Does thermal imaging detect leaks directly?
The camera does not see water itself. Because wet insulation holds heat for longer, it can show as a different temperature, but we check each finding with moisture readings.
How much does a thermal roof survey cost?
Our Premium Survey, from £400, includes thermal imaging. An in-person consultation and a follow-up 12 months later are included too. For bigger commercial roofs, we quote on size.
Will you photograph what you find?
Yes. Photos are part of every report, so you can see exactly what each finding refers to.
Is thermal imaging good for finding leaks?
It can help narrow down where water may be getting in. Patterns can suggest where trapped water has spread. We combine it with a visual inspection and moisture readings because the camera cannot confirm water on its own.
Do you test for asbestos?
No. We do not sample or test for asbestos. Where a material might contain it, such as old cement sheets on a building from before 2000, the report flags it, with a recommendation to have a specialist asbestos surveyor check before it’s disturbed.
