Thermal roof survey in Hook Common
Thermal imaging is often most useful on flat roofs, from small extensions to large commercial roofs. Patterns can suggest where water is trapped under the covering. On pitched roofs, slates and tiles over a ventilated space can hide what’s below, so we combine the camera with an inspection from the loft where there’s safe access. We survey flat roofs, pitched roof slopes and insulated roof spaces, and common reasons people get in touch are gaps in loft insulation and wet areas near outlets and upstands.
In a small place like Hook Common, open ground can mean strong wind. A small drone cannot fly safely in high wind or heavy rain, and thermal imaging works best with little wind. The visit is planned around the forecast, along with the journey and access. If the day turns windy or wet, the visit can be moved.
Where we cannot see part of the roof, the report says so. That way, it’s clear what was covered and what wasn’t, and what we’d suggest next.

Tips from our surveys
Small things make a difference, both for the survey and for the roof itself. Our tips:
- Clear leaves from outlets and gutters each autumn
- Move stored items away from the loft hatch
- Take photos of stains as they appear, so we can compare
- Keep the heating on as usual before a heat loss survey
If you are buying, the report gives you specific points to raise with the seller or agent. It’s your decision how to use it, whether you ask for work before completion or discuss the price.
Consider a repeat survey after major work on the roof, when the conditions are suitable.
Drones, thermal imaging and Hook Common roofs
A number of Hampshire villages keep thatched roofs on their older buildings. In this part of the South East, older roofs are mostly slate or clay tile and many newer ones concrete tile. Older coverings on steep or tall roofs are hard to judge from below, so close-up close-up aerial shots and thermal images help. If your home is older, it is worth knowing whether it’s listed or in a conservation area before planning roof work. Listed building consent covers changes to a listed building’s special interest, and an Article 4 direction can bring extra controls in a conservation area.
If your house is among the older ones in the streets near St John the Evangelist, thin or patchy insulation under an old roof often shows up clearly on a thermal image. If you look after a building such as Hook Infant School, a drone or thermal camera can show a large roof in a single visit.

Why get it checked now?
Heat lost through a roof costs money every winter. Thermal images can show where insulation is missing or has slipped, so you know where to put things right. Older cottages and farmhouses around Hook Common can have roof timbers that have been there a very long time, and water through a failed covering can rot timber if it is left.
There are three survey packages: Basic from £150, Standard from £250 and Premium from £400, with VAT included. What your roof costs depends on its size, access and what you want to find out.

FAQs for Hook Common
Is my home in Hook Common listed or in a conservation area?
Historic England’s list shows listed buildings, and the local council can tell you about conservation areas. Listed building consent is needed for changes that affect a listed building’s special interest, and conservation areas can limit changes of roofing material.
Do you cover smaller places like Hook Common?
Yes, Hook Common is on our map. A small place gets exactly the same survey as a big one, with the route planned beforehand.
When does the report arrive?
Report times are set by the package. Basic: within 48 hours. Standard: 24 to 48 hours. Premium: the same day. If you have a deadline, such as an exchange date, let us know as you book.
What does the report include?
You get our findings in writing, part by part, with photos, finishing with recommendations. The most urgent items are made clear.
Can you survey a shared roof?
Yes, if the freeholder or managing agent agrees access. On a shared roof we can only inspect the parts we are allowed to reach, and the report makes that clear.
Which survey includes thermal imaging?
Thermal imaging is included in our Premium Survey, from £400. That also includes a full inspection, a drone inspection where applicable, structural analysis and a same-day report.
Do you carry out surveys on Saturdays and Sundays?
We survey seven days a week: weekdays, Saturdays and Sundays. Just tell us the days that suit you.
How the survey works
It helps to start with what’s prompted the survey: buying, a leak, storm damage, new work or just wanting to know where things stand. That way we can focus on what matters to you. The visit normally takes about one to two hours at a house, including the thermal images, and around 3–4 hours for a commercial roof. Older roofs in small places like Hook Common can have low, tight loft spaces, so tell us about the loft hatch and any ladder. Only areas that can be reached safely are inspected.
- First we go over the roof, the problem you’ve noticed and the conditions forecast for the visit.
- The roof is inspected visually from safe viewpoints.
- Thermal images are taken to show differences in surface temperature.
- Any patterns of interest are checked with moisture readings where we can reach them.
- You get a report with thermal images, photographs and our recommendations.
Before the survey
- If you are buying, let the agent know when we’re coming
- Gather any invoices or paperwork from past roof work
- Have keys ready for side gates, garages or roof access doors
