Thermal roof survey in Ludgershall: what you get

What a thermal camera can show depends a lot on the weather. A sunny day before the survey, a dry roof surface and little wind all help. Rain, wind and cloud can all make the patterns weaker. We’ll discuss the weather with you when booking, and our report notes the conditions and how they affected what we saw. If you’ve noticed cold spots on ceilings under the roof and gaps in loft insulation, a survey will tell you what’s going on, whatever the roof.

Older buildings in small places like Ludgershall may be listed or in a conservation area. A look from the air or with a thermal camera does not touch the roof, so it’s a gentle way to see the condition of an old roof. Check with the council before planning any work on a listed building or one in a conservation area.

We keep jargon out of it: if work is needed, the report says so clearly, along with how urgent it is.

Do you need a thermal roof survey in Ludgershall?

Building owners and managing agents use thermal surveys to plan work on larger flat roofs. It can suggest which areas may be wet and which seem dry, so we know where to take moisture readings.

It is worth booking a survey if you’ve seen:

  • Water that travels before it shows
  • Moisture around outlets and upstands
  • Damp patches with no obvious cause
  • Damp where roofs meet walls and chimneys

If you own one of the older houses in the streets near Church of St Mary, older roofs can be steep and hard to see from the street, which is where photos from the air and thermal images help.

What to check before booking

  • What they won’t be able to tell you
  • How soon the report will arrive
  • Whether the roof space is looked at, where there is one
  • Is there a chance to talk the report through?

What a roof survey includes

How the survey changes by roof type

Felt and asphalt flat roofs

Felt and asphalt sit tight to the layers below, which frequently helps the camera pick up differences. Any patterns are checked with moisture readings.

GRP fibreglass roofs

Water under a GRP roof can reach the timber deck. The camera can help show where to look.

What you can safely check yourself

After strong wind, take a look from the pavement or garden: broken slates or tiles in the garden, gaps along the ridge or loose lead are signs to note. Leave anything above ground level to a survey.

Your own check is a good start, but it isn’t a survey. From ground level, valleys, flashings and the backs of chimneys are often out of sight.

Ludgershall: your questions answered

How do I find out if my home in Ludgershall is listed?

The council and Historic England’s list are the places to check. Either can affect what roof work is allowed, so it is worth checking before planning any.

Is Ludgershall in the area you cover?

Yes, Ludgershall is one of the places we work. Every survey there gets the same written report with photographs, and visits run on weekdays and weekends.

What do I do with the report?

You receive the written report by email, with photographs and recommendations. You can use it to talk to a seller, an insurer, a roofer or a managing agent, whichever applies.

Is thermal imaging included in your surveys?

It is part of the Premium Survey, from £400. You also get an in-person consultation and a 12-month follow-up. For bigger commercial roofs, we quote on size.

Can you use a thermal camera on a sloping roof?

It can help, but the results are often less clear than on a flat roof. The air space under slates and tiles can hide patterns, so we combine it with an inspection from the loft where there is safe access.

How do I arrange a thermal roof survey in Ludgershall?

Just ring 07833 053749 or drop us an email with the address. After a few questions, we confirm the price and fix a day.

Does someone need to be in?

Not necessarily. An outside-only look can be arranged beforehand, but the loft and any rooms with damp need someone to let us in.

Useful tips for Ludgershall property owners

From years of surveys, a few habits stand out:

  • File the images with your roof records
  • Note where damp appears and after what weather
  • Check outlets after heavy rain
  • Keep dated photos of any marks on ceilings

Once we have been, the thermal images, photos and readings go into a single report. We explain what each image may mean, alongside what we recommend. Premium reports are sent the same day.

Consider a repeat survey after major work on the roof, when the conditions are suitable.

Getting in touch

Getting the details right at the start saves time. It’s useful to include:

  • The type of building and roof, such as pitched or flat
  • The property’s address and postcode
  • Access details, such as a loft hatch or a shared roof
  • Why you want a survey: buying, a leak, a storm or new work

Getting a price is simple: just phone 07833 053749 or use the contact form, let us know about the property and we will suggest the right survey. The price is agreed up front.

The survey, step by step

A survey visit follows a simple order: we hear what you’ve seen, inspect the roof from every safe viewpoint, photograph what we find and record our findings for the written report. It usually takes between one and two hours on an ordinary house, and longer for a large or complex roof. Around Ludgershall, older homes can have small or awkward roof spaces, so let us know about the loft hatch and any ladder. We only go where it is safe.

  1. First we discuss the roof, any damp and the forecast for the visit.
  2. We look over the roof from wherever it’s safe.
  3. We take thermal images of the roof and of the loft where we can reach it.
  4. We take moisture readings where the images suggest a problem.
  5. The report pairs each thermal image with a photo and explains what it suggests.

Before we arrive

  • For flats, check roof access has been agreed
  • Have any paperwork from past roof work to hand
  • Jot down any questions you want answered
