Thermal roof survey in Southcourt
A thermal imaging roof survey uses a thermal camera to show differences in surface temperature across a roof. Those patterns can point to trapped moisture, missing insulation or heat escaping. The camera does not see water itself, so findings are checked with moisture readings. Thermal imaging is included in our Premium Survey, from £400. The report also notes the conditions on the day, since they affect what the camera can show. We survey ceilings below the roof, flat roofs and commercial roofs, and the problems we are asked to look at most are wet insulation beneath the membrane and cold areas below the roof.
Around Southcourt, lots of roofs are low enough to see partly from the garden or the street. Chimney tops, valleys and rear slopes are where close-up or thermal images help most. The forecast decides the day, as calm, dry conditions suit both. Close-up images often show wear on ridges, verges and flashings that can’t be judged properly from the ground.
Pictures do a lot of the work in our reports, so you can see each defect rather than just read about it. If something couldn’t be seen safely, the report is clear about it.

What a thermal roof survey does not cover
We only report whatever is safely visible on the day, so there are some things a survey can’t cover:
- Structural calculations, which need a structural engineer
- Hidden layers that need to be opened up to check
- An energy rating for the building

Should I look at the roof myself first?
Fresh stains on ceilings or walls after rain are worth noting. Photograph them and note the date, which helps when we check the roof.
A DIY look is useful, but it is not a survey. From the ground, valleys, flashings and the backs of chimneys are frequently out of sight.
Questions from Southcourt
Do you carry out roof surveys in Southcourt?
Yes. We work right across London and the South East, and Southcourt is part of that. You can call 07833 053749 or use the contact form with the address and some details, and we’ll talk through which survey suits.
Is my home in Southcourt listed or in a conservation area?
For listing, use Historic England’s list; for conservation areas, ask the council. The answer matters most when a change of material is on the cards.
Can you survey a shared roof?
Yes, if whoever owns or manages the building agrees access. On a shared roof we can only inspect the parts we are allowed to reach, and the report makes that clear.
What happens after the survey?
The report arrives by email. The Standard Survey includes a follow-up consultation, and the Premium Survey an in-person consultation.
What does a thermal roof survey show?
The camera records how the surface temperature varies. The patterns can suggest wet insulation, gaps in insulation or heat escaping. Findings are checked with moisture readings.
How fast do I get the report?
Basic reports arrive within 48 hours, Standard reports in 24–48 hours and Premium reports on the same day. Each one is emailed, ready to forward.
Does the report include photographs?
Yes. Photographs are part of every report, so you can see each point for yourself.
What we look for on each type of roof
Loft insulation
Heat loss shows most clearly when it is warm inside and colder outside. Our report notes how the conditions affected the images.
Pitched slate and tile roofs
Slate and tile roofs are frequently harder to read with a thermal camera, because of the air space beneath. We combine the images with an inspection from the loft where there’s safe access.
How we price thermal roof surveys
To price your survey, we look at:
- How many separate roofs there are, such as extensions, dormers and garages
- House, block, shop or office
- The roof’s overall size
- The shape of the roof and its details
We offer three survey packages: the Basic Survey from £150, the Standard Survey from £250 and the Premium Survey from £400, all inc. VAT. What your roof costs depends on its size, access and what you want to find out.
Getting in touch
There’s no need for technical words. It is enough to tell us:
- Why you want a survey: buying, a leak, a storm or new work
- The address and postcode of the property
- The type of building and roof, like pitched or flat
- Any photos you have, taken from the ground or a window
Getting a price is simple: just ring 07833 053749 or send us an email and give us some details about the property and we’ll suggest the right survey. We confirm the price before anything is booked.
What happens on the day
Time on site depends on the size and shape of the roof; as a rough guide, the survey takes between one and two hours at most homes, and about three to four hours for a commercial roof. If you have questions on the day, just ask. Homes around Southcourt often have gardens on more than one side, which gives us room to step back and see the roof. Let us know if any side is fenced off or hard to reach. The loft, where there is safe access, completes the picture.
- First we discuss the roof, any damp and the forecast for the visit.
- We look over the roof from wherever it’s safe.
- Thermal images are taken across the roof and, where there is safe access, in the loft.
- We take moisture readings where the images suggest a problem.
- Each image is set beside a normal photo and explained in the report.
Before the survey
- Point out any leaks or damp patches
- Let us know where we can park nearby
- If the roof is shared, arrange access with whoever manages the building
Arrange a survey
If you have photos of the roof, send them over. Take them safely from the ground or a window, and please don’t climb up for a closer look. To get started, phone 07833 053749 or drop us an email.
Advice
Why get it checked now?
Trapped water can harm decks, timbers and ceilings the longer it stays. Surveying sooner gives you more choice about what to do. Tradespeople may need to travel further to a smaller place like Southcourt, so it’s useful to plan roof work rather than call someone out in a hurry. A survey gives you that notice.
Thermal imaging and drone inspection (where applicable) come with the Premium Survey, which starts from £400, with VAT included. We’ll tell you which package suits the questions you have.

Airspace, weather and Southcourt roofs
Some villages in Buckinghamshire still have thatched roofs. Across the South East, older homes tend to have slate or clay tiles, and many later ones concrete tiles. Older coverings on steep or tall roofs are hard to judge from below, so close-up photos from the air and thermal images help. England has around 10,000 conservation areas and about 500,000 listed buildings. Listed building consent is needed for changes that affect a listed building’s special interest, and conservation areas can limit changes of roofing material, so the council is the place to ask.
For site and facilities teams at buildings such as Ashmead Combined School, big roofs are where close-up aerial shots and thermal images show the most at once. If you own one of the older houses in the streets near Church of the Good Shepherd, thin or patchy insulation under an old roof often shows up clearly on a thermal image. If you run a business near Friars Square, large commercial roofs are often easiest to see from the air or with a thermal camera.
