Thermal imaging roof survey in Martins Heron, Bracknell Forest
Thermal imaging to find moisture and heat loss patterns in a roof across Martins Heron, with drones and thermal imaging where they help. Call or email for a price.
- Patches of heat loss across the roof
- Ceilings that feel colder in places
- Moisture around outlets and upstands
About our thermal roof survey in Martins Heron
Thermal imaging can also show where a roof is losing heat. Missing or slipped insulation and gaps at the eaves frequently show up as temperature differences. It works best when the building is heated and it is colder outside. Our report points out what the images suggest and where to look more closely. We do not give energy ratings or heat loss calculations. If you’ve noticed damp patches with no obvious cause and moisture around outlets and upstands, a survey will tell you what’s going on, whatever the roof.
Older cottages and houses around Martins Heron may have little insulation, and some have extensions with their own roofs. Thermal patterns and close-up photos together give a fuller picture of the roof. Findings are checked with moisture readings where needed. Calm, dry weather suits both methods, so the date is set with the forecast in mind.
We keep jargon out of it: if work is needed, the report says so clearly.

Martins Heron: your questions answered
Do you cover smaller places like Martins Heron?
Yes, Martins Heron is on our map. Villages and rural addresses get the same survey as a town house.
Is my home in Martins Heron listed or in a conservation area?
We can’t confirm that for you, but Historic England’s list and your council can. Both listing and conservation areas can limit changes of roofing material.
What conditions are best for thermal imaging?
Conditions on the day affect the results. A sunny day beforehand, a dry surface and calm air all help. Rain, wind and heavy cloud can weaken the patterns, so we talk through the forecast as you book.
How much does a thermal roof survey cost?
It comes with our Premium Survey, which starts from £400. The Premium Survey also covers a full inspection, drone inspection where it applies, structural analysis and a report on the same day.
Can you give me structural calculations?
No. Visible signs such as deflection or sagging are recorded, but calculations and an engineer’s opinion are outside what we do. If one is needed, the report says so.
Can a thermal survey trace a roof leak?
Thermal imaging can help, alongside other checks. What it shows depends on the weather and the roof. Where it cannot be pinned down, the report suggests a next step, like electronic leak detection.
Does thermal imaging detect leaks directly?
No, not on its own. It shows surface temperature, and wet areas can show up because they hold heat differently. That’s why we check any patterns with moisture readings.
What this survey cannot tell you
Before you book, it is worth knowing what a survey will not do:
- Readings unaffected by sun, shade or reflections
- Seeing water directly, as the camera shows temperature, not moisture
- Insulation values or heat loss calculations
Not sure which survey suits your roof? You can call 07833 053749 or email us and we’ll tell you. What our survey covers.
What we check
- Loft conversions
- Ceilings below the roof
- Pitched roof slopes
- Insulated roof spaces
- Commercial roofs
- Flat roofs
What happens on the day
Photographs are taken throughout the visit, so you can see in the report what we found and where. Close-ups come from the safest viewpoint available, including by drone where it’s applicable and the weather allows. A typical visit takes roughly 1–2 hours on an ordinary house, rising to roughly 3–4 hours on a commercial building. With a bit of garden around a house, as there often is around Martins Heron, the roof can be viewed from several angles. Mention any side of the property we cannot get to. The loft, where there’s safe access, completes the picture.
- We go through the roof, the problem and the weather expected on the day.
- We look over the roof from wherever it’s safe.
- We take thermal images of the roof and of the loft where we can reach it.
- Patterns that stand out are checked with moisture readings.
- Each image is set beside a normal photo and explained in the report.
Getting ready for the survey
- Gather any invoices or paperwork from past roof work
- Show us where any leaks or stains appear
- Leave side gates unlocked

- The kind of building and roof involved
- Pictures of the roof from a safe spot, if you have them
- What made you get in touch

Before and after the survey
A survey works best with a little help from you, before and after. Some tips:
- Tell us where and when you’ve seen damp or stains
- Ask us about the forecast if rain is expected
- Clear leaves from outlets and gutters each autumn
- Check from ground level or a window, never by climbing
If you’re buying, the report gives you specific points to raise with the seller or agent. It is your decision how to use it, whether that’s asking for work or discussing the price.
Check that loft insulation is laid evenly and hasn’t been pushed aside. Insulation is often moved when people work in the loft space.
What we are asked to look at in Martins Heron
Unexplained damp is one of the main reasons people ask for thermal imaging. Water can travel under a roof covering or along timbers before it shows inside. Temperature patterns can help narrow down where to look.
Problems we come across often include:
- Leaks far from where the stain appears
- Gaps in loft insulation
- Wet insulation beneath the membrane
- Heat escaping through the roof
If you run a business near The Lexicon, large commercial roofs are often easiest to see from above or with a thermal imager.
Choosing a roof surveyor
- Whether any drone flown is registered with the CAA
- How soon the report will arrive
- Whether the loft is part of the inspection
- Which limits apply to the survey
Drones, thermal imaging and Martins Heron roofs
Martins Heron is part of Bracknell, one of the post-war new towns. Many homes in the new towns date from the post-war decades, with concrete interlocking tiles, low-pitched roofs and flat-roofed garages and porches. Low pitches and flat-roofed additions are hard to see from the ground, so aerial and thermal views add detail. Where the drone is part of the survey, the flight is checked against the Drone Safety Map first.
Anyone responsible for a site like Harmans Water Primary School will know that big roofs are where aerial photos and thermal images show the most at once. The streets around a church like St Paul are often among the oldest in a place, and if yours is one of the older homes nearby, thin or patchy insulation under an old roof frequently shows up clearly on a thermal image.

Different roofs, different checks
GRP fibreglass roofs
GRP roofs are laid over timber boards, so trapped moisture can affect the deck. Thermal imaging can suggest where that may be happening.
Single-ply and EPDM roofs
On big single-ply roofs, the camera helps show where to take readings. It focuses the survey on the areas that matter.
