Thermal roof survey in Medstead: what you get

Thermal imaging works best in the right conditions. It helps to have a sunny day beforehand, a dry surface and calm air. Rain, a strong wind or heavy cloud can make the images less clear. We talk through the forecast when you book, and the report explains how the conditions on the day affected the results. We survey flat roofs, loft conversions and commercial roofs, and people most often book us about thin or uneven insulation in the roof and cold spots on ceilings under the roof.

Places like Medstead can be near small airfields or other airspace restrictions, so the Drone Safety Map is checked before any flight. Exposed sites can be windy, and a small drone can’t fly safely in strong wind, while thermal imaging also works best with little wind. Neighbours’ privacy is part of planning each flight, along with the airspace and the weather.

The report doesn’t just list problems. For each finding, it explains what it is, why it matters and what we’d recommend, so you can plan your next steps.

What we can’t see

Before you book, it’s worth knowing what a survey won’t do:

  • Seeing water directly, as the camera shows temperature, not moisture
  • Readings unaffected by sun, shade or reflections
  • An energy rating for the building

Not sure which survey suits your roof? You can ring 07833 053749 or email us and we’ll tell you before you book. What our survey covers.

Roof types and parts we check

  • Ceilings below the roof
  • Loft conversions
  • Insulated roof spaces
  • Flat roofs
  • Commercial roofs
  • Pitched roof slopes

What we look for on each type of roof

Felt and asphalt flat roofs

On felt and asphalt flat roofs, wet insulation can show as a temperature difference across the surface. Moisture readings are used to check them.

GRP fibreglass roofs

Water can get through cracked GRP into the deck. We look at cracks by eye and use the images to see whether there is a pattern around them.

What happens on the day

Expect us to ask a few questions before we start, about the roof’s history, any leaks and past repairs. Then the inspection itself takes roughly 1–2 hours on an ordinary house, rising to roughly 3–4 hours on a commercial building. A visit to Medstead is planned like any other: the time, the access and where to park are agreed beforehand. Weekday and weekend visits are both possible. Tell us about any garages, outbuildings or extensions you want included.

  1. We go through the roof, the problem and the weather expected on the day.
  2. We look over the roof from wherever it is safe.
  3. We take thermal images of the roof and of the loft where we can reach it.
  4. We take moisture readings where the images suggest a problem.
  5. Each image is set beside a normal photo and explained in the report.

Before the survey

  • Point out any leaks or damp patches
  • Agree roof access with the managing agent if it is shared
  • Dig out any old roof reports or invoices

Tips that help

A survey works best with a little help from you, before and after. Tips:

  • Keep dated photos of any marks on ceilings
  • Remember the conditions on the day affect the results
  • File the images with your roof records
  • Do not switch the heating off before the visit

Where a pattern can’t be confirmed, the report says what could help, like electronic leak detection or opening up a small area.

Check that loft insulation is laid evenly and hasn’t been pushed aside. Insulation is frequently moved when people work in the loft space.

Drones, thermal imaging and Medstead roofs

About 2.1 miles north lies Bentworth Hall, a reminder of how long the area around Medstead has been built on. Older roofs in the wider area can hide decades of patch repairs, so the detail matters, and any change of roofing material on a listed home needs checking with the council first. If the drone is used for your survey, we check the Drone Safety Map for restrictions before flying.

The streets around a church like Church of the Good Shepherd are often among the oldest in a place, and if your house is among the older ones nearby, tall stacks and steep slopes are easier to judge with close-up aerial photos than from the pavement. If you look after a building like Medstead Church of England Primary School, a drone or thermal camera can show a large roof in a single visit.

Rented homes, blocks and businesses

Where a roof is shared: access has to be agreed with whoever owns or manages the building. Let us know about it when you book and we will plan the visit with that in mind.

For blocks of flats, a roof survey helps managing agents and residents’ management companies plan ahead. Recommendations are set out with the most urgent first where relevant, which helps with budgets and planning.

What happens if roof problems are left?

A poorly insulated roof loses heat year after year. Thermal images can show where insulation is missing or has slipped, so improvements can go where they’re needed. In an older home around Medstead, water from a roof defect can get into timber and plaster, which is far harder to put right than the roof fault itself.

Our price is from £400, including VAT. Packages run from Basic at £150 through Standard at £250 to Premium at £400, inc. VAT.

Questions from Medstead

Is my home in Medstead listed or in a conservation area?

Start with Historic England’s list for listing and your council for conservation areas. It’s worth checking before planning roof work, as both can affect what’s allowed.

Do you carry out roof surveys in Medstead?

We do. The survey and report are the same in Medstead as anywhere else.

Will you photograph what you find?

Yes. Photographs are part of every report, so you can see exactly what each finding refers to.

How does a thermal imaging roof survey work?

It records surface temperature across the roof. Unusual patterns can point to trapped water, gaps in insulation or heat escaping, and we check them with moisture readings.

What’s the best way to book?

To arrange a survey, call 07833 053749 or email us and tell us the address and what you want to find out. We will confirm the price and find a day that suits.

How long does the survey take?

It normally takes roughly 1–2 hours for most homes, plus time to check any thermal findings with moisture readings. The written report follows by email, on the timescale of your package.

What does the report include?

A photo-illustrated written report, explaining the condition of the roof, any defects and our recommendations, with the most urgent first where relevant. Standard adds moisture detection and a structural check; Premium adds thermal imaging, drone inspection where applicable and structural analysis.
