How a thermal roof survey works in Soldridge
Thermal imaging is a useful tool, but it has limits. It shows surface temperature, and things like sun, shade, reflections and wind all affect the readings. That’s why we check findings with moisture readings and a close visual inspection. Our report says plainly what the camera picked up and how sure we can be. Where something cannot be confirmed, we say what would help next. We survey commercial roofs, ceilings below the roof and insulated roof spaces, and common reasons people get in touch are stains that keep coming back and damp around roof outlets and upstands.
Older buildings in small places like Soldridge may be listed or in a conservation area. Neither a drone survey nor a thermal survey involves any work on the roof, so it’s a gentle way to see the condition of an old roof. Check with the council before planning any work on a listed building or one in a conservation area.
It is not only a list of defects. For each finding, it explains what it is, why it matters and what we’d recommend, so you can decide what to do next.

Do you need a thermal roof survey in Soldridge?
Buyers sometimes want more than a visual look at the roof. A Premium Survey adds thermal imaging, a drone inspection where applicable and a same-day report, which helps when timescales are tight.
Look out for signs like these:
- Ceilings that feel colder in places
- Water getting in at parapets and stacks
- Wet areas near outlets and upstands
- Damp patches with no obvious cause
Take an older house close to Church of the Good Shepherd: older roofs can be steep and hard to see from the street, which is where aerial photos and thermal images help.
What to check before booking
- How long they’ve been surveying roofs
- What happens after the report arrives
- Their report turnaround times
- Which limits apply to the survey
DIY checks: what’s safe
The one thing to avoid is getting up close. Slates, tiles, flat roofs and rooflights can give way, and a fall can be serious. That part is for a survey.
Inside, the loft is a good place to look, with care. Take a torch and only step on boards or joists, checking for stains, damp wood or chinks of daylight.
Questions from Soldridge
Is Soldridge within the area you cover?
Yes, we do. Our area covers London and South East England, from towns to the smallest villages. The journey is planned ahead, so it helps to know about access.
How do I find out if my home in Soldridge is listed?
Start with Historic England’s list for listing and your council for conservation areas. Either can affect what roof work is allowed, so it’s worth checking before planning any.
What will the report tell me?
Written findings with photographs, explaining the condition of the roof, any defects and our recommendations. Standard adds moisture detection and a structural check; Premium adds thermal imaging, drone inspection where it applies and structural analysis.
What conditions are best for thermal imaging?
Conditions on the day affect the results. A sunny day beforehand, a dry surface and calm air all help. Rain, wind and heavy cloud can weaken the patterns, so we discuss the forecast when booking.
Is it a structural engineer’s report?
No. We point out what can be seen, such as sagging or deflection, but we are not structural engineers and don’t carry out calculations. If we think you need an engineer, the report says so.
Does this replace a RICS home survey?
No. This is a survey of the roof only, and it isn’t a RICS Level 2 or Level 3 survey. It can sit alongside a RICS survey if you want both.
When does the report arrive?
Basic reports arrive within 48 hours, Standard reports in 24–48 hours and Premium reports on the same day. Each one is emailed.
Tips that help
A few practical points come up again and again on our surveys. They’re worth knowing whatever the roof:
- Keep dated photos of any marks on ceilings
- Heat the home normally on the days before
- Ask us about the forecast if rain is expected
- Leave the roof to people with safe access
After the visit, we put the thermal images, photographs and moisture readings into one report. We explain what each image may mean, alongside what we recommend. With a Premium Survey, you get the report the same day.
Check that loft insulation is laid evenly and hasn’t been pushed aside. Gaps often appear after work in the loft.

Older roofs in small places like Soldridge can have low, tight loft spaces, so let us know about the loft hatch and any ladder. We only go where it’s safe.
- First we go over the roof, the problem you’ve noticed and the conditions forecast for the visit.
- We check the roof from the ground, from windows and from the roof itself where it’s safe.
- Thermal images are taken to show differences in surface temperature.
- We check the patterns that stand out with moisture readings where there’s safe access.
- You get a report with thermal images, photographs and our recommendations.
Getting ready for the survey
- Unlock side gates and any roof access doors
- Make a note of anything you’d like us to look at
