Tips from our surveys

From years of surveys, a few habits stand out:

  • Include valley, parapet and box gutters when clearing
  • Check that downpipes are firmly fixed to the wall
  • Look for green streaks or damp patches on walls
  • Look for new stains on ceilings below valleys after rain

If anything in the report isn’t clear, ask us. With the Standard Survey there’s a follow-up consultation and the Premium Survey comes with an in-person one.

Have overhanging branches and climbing plants cut back from the roof using someone with the right kit. Fewer leaves in the gutters means fewer blockages.

Gutter survey in Soldridge

We carry out gutter surveys in Soldridge as part of our cover across London and the South East. On the day, we inspect everything that’s safely in view, from ground level, from windows and from the loft space. Time on site typically takes an hour or two at most homes; commercial roofs usually need 3–4 hours. The written report follows, with photos and recommendations. We survey eaves gutters, outlets and hoppers and fascias and soffits, and the problems we are asked to look at most are gutters that have fallen out of line and gutters packed with leaves or moss.

In a village or hamlet like Soldridge, older cottages and farmhouses frequently sit alongside barns, outbuildings and a few newer houses. Roofs there can be clay tile, slate, stone or thatch, and chimney stacks are often old. Each needs checking in its own way, and thatch is a specialist material we report on as far as it can be seen. On older roofs, it’s typically the chimneys and lead flashings that need work first.

If any part of the gutter couldn’t be seen safely, we say so in the report. You will know exactly what was inspected and what wasn’t, and what we’d suggest next.

The survey, step by step

Photos are taken throughout the visit, so the report shows exactly what we saw. Close-ups come from the safest viewpoint available, including by drone where it’s applicable and the weather allows. Most surveys take roughly 1–2 hours at a house, depending on how many gutter runs and downpipes there are. Older rural homes like those around Soldridge can have a main roof, lower lean-to roofs and outbuildings all joined together. Each part is looked at from wherever it can be seen safely.

  1. First, you tell us what you’ve seen, like overflows or damp.
  2. Gutters, downpipes, fascias and soffits are inspected from safe vantage points.
  3. Any valley, parapet or box gutters are looked at as far as safe access allows.
  4. The roof space is checked for water marks if it’s safe to get into.
  5. We send a written report with photos and clear recommendations.

Your questions about gutter surveys in Soldridge

Is Soldridge in the area you cover?

Yes, Soldridge is within the area we cover. We work right across London and the South East. You can ring 07833 053749 or send us an email with the address and some details.

Does a conservation area affect roof work in Soldridge?

Your council is the best source, with Historic England’s list for listed buildings. Both listing and conservation areas can limit changes of roofing material, and councils can also use Article 4 directions.

Do you survey at weekends?

Yes. We survey on weekdays and at weekends. Just phone 07833 053749 or send us an email to arrange a day.

When does the report arrive?

It depends on the package: Basic within 48 hours, Standard in 24–48 hours and Premium the same day. The report is emailed to you.

Does the report include photographs?

Yes, plenty. Pictures sit next to the findings they show, so you can see what we mean.

Do you use drones?

Yes, where it’s applicable. We hold a CAA Flyer ID and Operator ID and fly a drone under 250g, and every flight depends on the airspace and the weather.

Do you climb onto every roof?

Only if it’s safe. We inspect whatever is safely visible: from ground level, from windows and vantage points, from the roof space, from the roof itself where safe and by drone where applicable. Anything we can’t see is noted in the report.

Honest limits

Every survey has limits, and it is better to know them up front. Keep these in mind:

  • The inside of a downpipe along its whole length
  • Parts of gutters that cannot be seen safely
  • Damage hidden inside walls or behind boards

If you’re not sure which survey you need, call 07833 053749 or email us and we’ll give you a straight answer. What a survey covers and does not.

For landlords and managing agents

For a freeholder or residents’ company, a roof report is a sound basis for a maintenance plan, with the most urgent items set out first.

Roof problems in a rented home affect tenants as well as the building. A survey shows what needs attention, so you can plan the work around your tenants.

Roofs, chimneys and gutters in Soldridge

A number of Hampshire villages keep thatched roofs on their older buildings. In this part of the South East, older roofs are mostly slate or clay tile and many newer ones concrete tile. Each of these coverings has its own weak points, from fixings and valleys to flashings, chimneys and gutters. About 2.8 miles north lies Bentworth Hall, a reminder of how long the area around Soldridge has been built on. On older houses around here, roofs often carry the marks of earlier repairs, from replaced slates to new lead.

For an older house near a landmark such as Church of the Good Shepherd, the nails, lead and mortar on the roof may be wearing out even where the slates or tiles look fine.

What happens if roof problems are left?

A dripping joint or sagging bracket won’t get better on its own. Every downpour adds to the damage, on walls, timber and sometimes inside. A survey now tells you what needs doing and how urgent it is. Where a roof is exposed, as many are in small places like Soldridge, driving rain gets into any weakness, and older walls, once damp, take a long time to dry.

There are three survey packages: Basic from £150, Standard from £250 and Premium from £400, all with VAT included. The price for your roof depends on its size, access and what you’d like to know.

What you can safely check yourself

During heavy rain, look at the gutters from ground level or a window. Overflowing water can point to a blockage or a sagging run.

Your own check is a good start, but it isn’t a survey. You won’t see flashings, valleys or the backs of chimneys properly from the ground.
