Common questions in Medstead

Is my home in Medstead listed or in a conservation area?

Your council is the best source, with Historic England’s list for listed buildings. Both listing and conservation areas can limit changes of roofing material, and councils can also use Article 4 directions.

Is Medstead within the area you cover?

Yes, we do. We cover the whole of London and South East England, and smaller places are part of that. Longer journeys are simply planned beforehand.

Do you survey at weekends?

Yes, weekend visits are possible as well as weekdays. Just phone 07833 053749 or email us to arrange it.

How long have you been surveying roofs?

More than 5,000 surveys over 20+ years.

Does the season matter for a gutter survey?

Whenever suits you. If you’ve already seen a gutter overflowing, it’s best not to wait, because the walls take the water.

How do I book a survey in Medstead?

To book, call 07833 053749 or drop us an email and let us know the address and what you need to know. We’ll confirm the price and find a day that suits.

How fast do I get the report?

Report times are set by the package. Basic is within 48 hours, Standard is 24–48 hours and Premium is the same day. Mention any deadline when booking.

Gutter survey in Medstead

We survey gutters and rainwater systems in Medstead and right across London and South East England. We inspect everything we can see safely from ground level, windows, the roof space and the roof where it’s safe. A visit typically takes between one and two hours at a typical home, while a commercial roof takes nearer three to four hours. Afterwards, you get a written report with photos and recommendations. We survey downpipes, valley gutters and parapet and box gutters, and common reasons people get in touch are valley or box gutters that overflow inside and rotten fascias or stained soffits.

Houses in smaller places like Medstead can face open ground, where wind and driving rain hit the roof harder. That weather tells first on ridges, verges, chimneys and flashings. Checking those edges shows whether anything has begun to work loose before it lets water in. A loose ridge tile or slate gives the wind something to catch, and others soon follow.

The report records the gutter as we found it on the day. That makes it useful now and a handy reference later, such as when you want to compare after future work.

How the survey changes by roof type

Aluminium and other metal gutters

Long metal gutter runs on larger buildings can hide blocked outlets, so we check the outlets carefully.

Cast iron gutters

Rust at joints and brackets is the usual weak point on cast iron. We note corrosion, cracks and leaking joints where they can be seen.

Should I look at the roof myself first?

Look up at the roof after a storm, from ground level: broken slates or tiles in the garden, gaps along the ridge or loose lead are signs to note. Do not go up yourself.

You can learn a lot from the ground. With binoculars, look for slipped or missing slates and tiles, gaps along the ridge and leaning chimneys. Please do not climb up for a closer look.

Tips that help

There is plenty you can do without going near the roof. Here’s what helps most:

  • Have overhanging branches cut back
  • Watch ceilings under valley gutters for fresh marks
  • Look out for overflows when it pours
  • Look for downpipes coming loose

Where the evidence points to drains below ground, the report says so, so a drain survey can be arranged. We also note anything else we spot on the roof while we’re there.

Have your gutters cleared at least once a year or more frequently near trees. The best time is usually after the leaves have dropped. Clean gutters can do their job.

The survey, step by step

There isn’t much for you to do on the day. Point out anything you’ve noticed, like stains, drips or loose pieces, and we’ll get on with the inspection. The survey itself takes an hour or two at a house, depending on how many gutter runs and downpipes there are. Homes around Medstead often have gardens on more than one side, which gives us room to step back and see the roof. Mention any side of the property we cannot get to. The loft, where there is safe access, completes the picture.

  1. We start with what you’ve noticed, such as damp or overflowing gutters.
  2. We walk round the building and check the gutters, downpipes and fascias from the ground.
  3. Valleys, parapets and box gutters are inspected where they can safely be seen.
  4. Where it is safe, we check the loft for signs of water.
  5. You receive a report with photos and recommendations.

Advice

Why act early in Medstead

Going up a ladder to check your own gutters carries real risk. You can see drips and overflows from ground level but hidden gutters are another matter. We inspect as far as it is safe to see and put it in writing. With lower homes, common in places like Medstead, there is little between a roof defect and the ceiling, so water can show inside quickly once it gets past the covering. Catching the cause first saves redecorating as well.

Simple, low roofs take less time to survey than tall or complicated ones, and the package matters as well. We’ll give you the figure before anything is booked.

Gutter surveys around Medstead

Historic houses such as Bentworth Hall, about 2.1 miles north, show how far back building in the area around Medstead goes. If your house is among the older ones, expect a mix of original materials and later repairs on the roof. Thatch survives on some older buildings in Hampshire’s villages. In this part of the South East, older roofs are mostly slate or clay tile and many newer ones concrete tile. Knowing the covering helps explain which parts of a roof are likely to need work first.

If you own a rental within reach of Alton station, the gap between tenancies is a good time to have the roof looked at. If you look after a building like Medstead Church of England Primary School, a written record of a large roof helps plan work for the holidays rather than in term time. For an older house near a landmark like Church of the Good Shepherd, old fixings, lead flashings and tall chimneys are typical of older roofs.

How we price gutter surveys

Our packages start from £150, with VAT included. What you pay for your roof depends on:

  • How many separate roofs there are, such as extensions, dormers and garages
  • Whether thermal imaging or a drone is needed
  • Chimneys, valleys, parapets and other details
  • The roof’s overall size

Thermal imaging and drone inspection (where applicable) come with the Premium Survey, from £400 including VAT. We can help you choose the package that fits what you need to know.

What to let us know when you get in touch

There is no need for technical words. It is enough to tell us:

  • Whether there is a loft hatch, a shared roof or tricky access
  • The reason for the survey, like buying, a leak or storm damage
  • Photos of the roof, taken safely from the ground or a window
  • Your postcode, so we can check access and travel

We confirm the price for your roof before booking, so you know the cost up front. Our price is from £150, including VAT. For a price for your roof, ring 07833 053749 or drop us an email.
