Your questions about thermal roof surveys in Portsea
Do you cover smaller places like Portsea?
We do. A small place gets exactly the same survey as a big one, with the route planned beforehand.
How do I find out if my home in Portsea is listed?
You can check whether a building is listed on Historic England’s list, and your council can tell you if it’s in a conservation area. If a home is listed, changes that affect its special interest need listed building consent, and in a conservation area re-roofing in different materials may need permission.
Do you carry professional indemnity insurance?
Professional indemnity and public liability insurance cover our surveys. Ask if you need details for a managing agent or building owner.
How do I book a survey in Portsea?
To book, call 07833 053749 or use the contact form and let us know the address and what you need to know. We’ll confirm the price and find a day that suits.
Does thermal imaging work on slate and tile roofs?
It can help, but the results are frequently less clear than on a flat roof. Slates and tiles over a ventilated space can mask what’s below, so we also look from the loft where it’s safe.
Will thermal imaging find my leak?
It frequently helps show where to look. Water can travel under a covering before it shows inside, and temperature patterns can help follow it. It is used alongside a close inspection and moisture readings, as the camera alone can’t prove a leak.
How many surveys have you done?
We have been surveying roofs for over 20 years and have completed over 5,000 surveys across London and South East England.
Thermal roof survey in Portsea: what you get
Our Premium Survey, from £400, brings together a full roof inspection and thermal imaging. It also includes a drone inspection where applicable, a structural analysis and a same-day report. An in-person consultation and a 12-month follow-up are included too. You can ring 07833 053749 or email us with the address and a note of what you’ve noticed. Larger commercial roofs are quoted for their size. If you’re worried about heat escaping through the roof and thin or uneven insulation in the roof, a survey will tell you what’s going on, whatever the roof.
Older cottages and houses around Portsea may have little insulation, and some have extensions with their own roofs. A thermal image can show where heat is escaping or where moisture may be trapped, and drone photos show the roof surfaces themselves. Anything that looks like moisture is checked with a meter. Results depend on the weather, so the visit is planned around the forecast.
We write the report in plain English, so you don’t need to be a roofer to follow it. Photos show what each point refers to, with the urgent items made clear.

Signs you need a thermal roof survey in Portsea
Some owners book because the rooms under the roof feel cold. Missing or slipped insulation can stand out as temperature differences, particularly when there is a clear difference between inside and outside.
Here are some of the things we see frequently:
- Damp around chimneys and parapets
- Missing or slipped insulation
- Possible trapped moisture under a flat roof covering
- Moisture around outlets and upstands
The streets around a church such as St Ann's Church are frequently among the oldest in a place, and if your house is among the older ones nearby, thin or patchy insulation under an old roof frequently shows up clearly on a thermal image.

Why act early in Portsea
Without thermal imaging, the only way to see how far water has spread is often to open up the roof. That helps you and your roofer decide what really needs replacing. Tradespeople may need to travel further to a smaller place like Portsea, so it helps to plan roof work rather than call someone out in a hurry. A survey gives you that notice.
The Premium Survey includes thermal imaging and drone inspection where it applies, which starts from £400, including VAT. We’ll tell you which package suits the questions you have.

What affects the cost of thermal roof surveys
Several things affect the price of a survey:
- Extensions, dormers and garages with roofs of their own
- The type of building, from a house to a block or an office
- The shape of the roof and its details
- The use of thermal imaging or a drone
We offer three survey packages: the Basic Survey from £150, the Standard Survey from £250 and the Premium Survey from £400, all with VAT included. The price for your roof depends on its size, access and what you’d like to know.
Getting in touch
There’s no need for technical words. It is enough to let us know:
- Any deadline, such as an exchange date
- Anything about access we should know
- Why you want a survey: buying, a leak, a storm or new work
- Any stains, drips or damp patches you’ve seen indoors
If you are buying, it helps to book soon after your offer is accepted, so you have the findings in time to act on them before you exchange. Otherwise, simply phone 07833 053749 or use the contact form whenever suits you.
What we can’t see
It helps to know what a survey won’t do before you book:
- Structural calculations, which need a structural engineer
- What’s inside walls or under coverings, without opening up
- Proving moisture from the images alone
Not sure which survey suits your roof? You can ring 07833 053749 or send us an email and we’ll tell you before you book. What a survey covers and does not.
Roof types and parts we check
- Flat roofs
- Pitched roof slopes
- Commercial roofs
- Loft conversions
- Insulated roof spaces
- Ceilings below the roof
What we look for on each type of roof
Loft insulation
In the loft space, the camera can pick up gaps and thin areas of insulation. We look where there’s safe access.
Felt and asphalt flat roofs
Felt and asphalt sit tight to the layers below, which often helps the camera pick up differences. We confirm any patterns with moisture readings.
What a thermal roof survey looks like in Portsea
The coast is about 1 mile or less from Portsea, and wind off the sea can be strong. Thermal imaging works best after a sunny day, with a dry roof surface and little wind, so the date is chosen with the forecast in mind. Thatch survives on some older buildings in Hampshire’s villages. Slate and clay tile are the usual coverings on older South East houses, with concrete tiles on many later estates. Steep or complicated roofs are often hard to see from the ground, which is where aerial photos and thermal images help.
If you run a hotel or guest house in or near Portsea, a roof problem can mean rooms out of use, so it’s worth knowing the roof’s condition. If you look after a shop, office or commercial unit, for example near Tricorn Centre, large commercial roofs are often easiest to see by drone or thermal camera.

What happens on the day
After the inspection, everything we found is written up in a report with photographs, emailed to you. As for time on site, it normally takes between one and two hours for most houses, and more on a big or complicated roof. A visit to Portsea is planned like any other: the time, the access and where to park are agreed ahead of time. Weekday and weekend visits are both possible. Tell us about any garages, outbuildings or extensions you want included.
- First we discuss the roof, any damp and the forecast for the visit.
- We look over the roof from wherever it’s safe.
- We take thermal images of the roof and of the loft where we can reach it.
- We take moisture readings where the images suggest a problem.
- The report pairs each thermal image with a photo and explains what it suggests.
