Thermal Roof Survey in Princelett
Thermal imaging to find moisture and heat loss patterns in a roof in Princelett, carried out by an experienced roof surveyor. Every survey comes with a written report and photos.
- Damp around roof outlets and upstands
- Ceilings that feel colder in places
- Water that travels before it shows
Thermal roof survey in Princelett
Thermal imaging works best in the right conditions. A sunny day before the survey, a dry roof surface and little wind all help. Rain, wind and cloud can all make the patterns weaker. We talk through the forecast when booking, and the report explains how the conditions on the day affected the results. Typical surveys look at wet areas near outlets and upstands and wet insulation beneath the membrane, across pitched roof slopes, insulated roof spaces and commercial roofs.
Somewhere as small as Princelett, older roofs are often steep and partly hidden by trees or outbuildings. A drone and a thermal camera each give a view you can’t get from the ground. Both the forecast and the airspace are checked first, and the journey is planned ahead of time. Steep slopes and tall chimney stacks are where a close-up view adds the most.
The report works through the roof section by section, from the main slopes down to the gutters and outlets. It records what’s sound as well as what is not.

Leave it or get it looked at?
A poorly insulated roof loses heat year after year. Thermal images can show where insulation is missing or has slipped, so you know where to put things right. For older village homes like those around Princelett, the right replacement materials aren’t always easy to find quickly. That is one more reason to find defects before they become urgent.
Simple, low roofs take less time to survey than tall or complicated ones, and the package you pick makes a difference too. The price is always agreed first.

What a thermal roof survey looks like in Princelett
The coast is about 2 miles or less from Princelett, and wind off the sea can be strong. Clear thermal results need a dry roof and little wind after a sunny day, so the date depends on the forecast. Princelett is about 3 miles from Sandown Airport. Where the drone is part of the survey, the Drone Safety Map is checked for restrictions first.
Historic houses such as Haseley Manor, about 1.8 miles north-west, show how far back building around Princelett goes. A drone or thermal survey doesn’t involve any work on the roof, which suits older buildings.

What affects the cost of thermal roof surveys
Several things affect the price of a survey:
- How tall the building is and how easy the roof is to see
- Whether thermal imaging or a drone is needed
- The shape of the roof and its details
- The size of the roof
A Basic Survey starts from £150, with VAT included. Standard is from £250 and Premium from £400, both inc. VAT. You will know the price for your roof before booking.
Getting in touch
We’ll usually ask about:
- How the loft is reached, if there is one
- The kind of building and roof involved
- The address and postcode of the property
- Any photos you have, taken from ground level or a window
Photos help, if you have them. Pictures from ground level or a window are fine; never climb up to get a better view. To get started, ring 07833 053749 or send us an email.
What we’re asked to look at in Princelett
People frequently book a thermal survey when a damp patch has no obvious cause. Water can travel under a roof covering or along timbers before it shows inside. Temperature patterns can help narrow down where to look.
A survey makes sense if you’ve noticed:
- Wet areas near outlets and upstands
- Thin or uneven insulation in the roof
- Heat escaping through the roof
- Areas of a flat roof that may hold water
Anyone responsible for a site like Sandown Bay Academy will know that thermal images can show where wet insulation sits under a big flat roof.
Questions to ask before you book
- How much experience they have with roofs like yours
- Whether the inside of the roof is included
- Which limits apply to the survey
- Whether VAT is added on top
Before and after the survey
A survey works best with a little help from you, before and after. Tips:
- Keep a record of when stains appear
- Leave the roof to people with safe access
- Heat the home normally on the days before
- Remember the conditions on the day affect the results
After the visit, we put the thermal images, photographs and moisture readings into one report. We explain what each image may mean, alongside what we recommend. With a Premium Survey, you get the report the same day.
Have small defects in the covering fixed early. Water that gets under a covering can spread a long way before it shows.

Every survey has limits, and it’s better to know them up front. Keep these in mind:
- Clear results when the conditions on the day are poor

Princelett questions
How do I find out if my home in Princelett is listed?
We cannot confirm that for you, but Historic England’s list and your council can. Both listing and conservation areas can limit changes of roofing material.
Do you cover smaller places like Princelett?
Yes, we do. We work right across London and the South East, and smaller places are part of that. The journey is planned ahead, so it’s useful to know about access.
How experienced are you?
We have been surveying roofs for over 20 years and have completed over 5,000 surveys.
Can you use a thermal camera on a sloping roof?
It can help, but the results are often less clear than on a flat roof. Slates and tiles over a ventilated space can mask what’s below, so we also look from the loft where it’s safe.
Will you walk on the roof?
Not unless it is safe. Safe viewpoints, the loft space and a drone where it applies cover most of what’s needed, and the report notes anything we couldn’t see.
How quickly is the report sent?
Report times are set by the package. Basic is within 48 hours, Standard is 24–48 hours and Premium is the same day. Mention any deadline when booking.
What’s the best way to book?
The quickest way is to ring 07833 053749 or drop us an email. Let us know the address and a little about the roof, and we’ll suggest the right survey. We survey on any day of the week.
How the survey works
Where it is relevant and can be reached safely, the loft space is checked as well as the outside. Inside, we look for staining, damp, gaps and signs of movement, as far as the space allows. All in, the survey typically takes about one to two hours for a house, while a commercial roof takes nearer three to four hours. For a village or hamlet like Princelett, the journey is planned ahead of time: let us know about narrow lanes, gates, long drives and where we can park. The roof is looked at from ground level, from windows, from the loft where there’s safe access and from the roof where it is safe.
- You let us know about the roof and any damp, leaks or cold rooms.
- We check the conditions and note how they may affect the images.
- We inspect the roof and take thermal images during the same visit.
- Moisture readings are used to check what the camera shows.
- You get the report the same day, with an in-person consultation to follow.
How to prepare
- Have any paperwork from past roof work to hand
- If you are buying, let the agent know when we are coming
- For a flat or shared roof, check access with the building owner or managing agent
