South Ruislip Thermal Roof Survey
Thermal roof surveys across South Ruislip, backed by more than 20 years’ experience. You get a clear report with photos.

- Ceilings that feel colder in places
- Thin or uneven insulation in the roof
How a thermal roof survey works in South Ruislip
What a thermal camera can show depends a lot on the weather. A sunny day before the survey, a dry roof surface and little wind all help. Rain, a strong wind or heavy cloud can make the images less clear. We talk through the forecast as you book, and our report notes the conditions and how they affected what we saw. We survey ceilings below the roof, commercial roofs and pitched roof slopes, and people most frequently book us about patches of heat loss across the roof and damp patches with no obvious cause.
London airspace is busy and tightly controlled: restriction zones surround Heathrow, London City Airport and London Heliport, and Hyde Park, the City of London and the Isle of Dogs have restricted areas of their own. Before a drone goes up in South Ruislip, the address is checked against all of them, and where permission is needed, the flight waits for it.
Every survey ends with a written report, with photographs, emailed to you. It explains the condition of the roof, the defects we found and what we recommend.

Can I check my roof myself?
Your own check is a good start, but it is not a survey. You won’t see flashings, valleys or the backs of chimneys properly from ground level, and those are details a survey looks at closely.
The one thing to avoid is getting up close. Slates, tiles, flat roofs and rooflights can give way, and a fall can be serious. That’s where a survey comes in.
Your questions about thermal roof surveys in South Ruislip
Is drone flying allowed in South Ruislip?
It depends on the exact address and the weather on the day. RAF Northolt is about 2 miles away, so we check the Drone Safety Map for restrictions before any flight. London’s airspace includes flight restriction zones around Heathrow, London City Airport and London Heliport, and restricted areas over Hyde Park, the City of London and the Isle of Dogs. Every London address is checked against them before a flight. Strong wind or a downpour also stops a small drone flying.
How do I find out if my home in South Ruislip is listed?
For listing, use Historic England’s list; for conservation areas, ask the council. It matters most if you are planning to re-roof in a different material.
What do I do with the report?
You will get the report by email, with photographs and clear recommendations. The Standard Survey includes a follow-up consultation, and the Premium Survey an in-person consultation, so you can talk the findings through.
Can a thermal camera see water?
Thermal imaging shows temperature rather than water. Because wet insulation holds heat for longer, it can show as a different temperature, and moisture readings are used to check it.
Does thermal imaging work on slate and tile roofs?
It can help, but the results are frequently less clear than on a flat roof. The air space under slates and tiles can hide patterns, so we also look from the loft where it is safe.
Does the weather affect a thermal survey?
The results depend on the weather. Dry, calm weather after some sun gives the best chance of clear images. We record the conditions in the report, so you know how much weight to give the images.
How fast do I get the report?
It depends on the package: Basic within 48 hours, Standard in 24–48 hours and Premium the same day. Reports are sent by email.
Before and after the survey
Most of what helps is simple and safe from the ground. Our suggestions:
- Keep outlets and gutters clear to stop water sitting
- Leave the roof to people with safe access
- Note where damp appears and after what weather
- Do not switch the heating off ahead of the visit
Many people send the report to roofers, who can then quote for the areas shown. Each thermal image is matched to a normal photo, so the areas are easy to locate.
Watch for new damp patches on ceilings beneath the roof. Early action keeps insulation from staying wet.
Roof by roof
Parapets, valleys and junctions
Parapet and valley gutters can overflow inside a building. We use the camera and moisture readings to help follow it.
GRP fibreglass roofs
GRP roofs are laid over timber boards, so trapped moisture can affect the deck. The camera can help show where to look.
Thermal roof surveys in South Ruislip: local notes
RAF Northolt is about 2 miles from South Ruislip. If the drone is used for your survey, we check the Drone Safety Map for restrictions before flying. Northolt Manor, about 1.4 miles south-east, is one of the historic houses in the wider area around South Ruislip. On older houses around here, roofs frequently carry the marks of earlier repairs, from replaced slates to new lead, and a listed home or one in a conservation area may need consent for changes of material.
Take an older house close to Church of St Mary: older roofs can be steep and hard to see from the street, which is where aerial photos and thermal images help. Shop and office owners around St. George's Shopping Centre may find that thermal images can show trapped moisture across a wide commercial roof.

What we can’t see
A survey is a close look at the roof, but it can’t do everything. Its limits include:
- A formal energy assessment
- Readings unaffected by sun, shade or reflections
- Whether the deck or roof structure is strong enough
If you’re not sure which survey you need, call 07833 053749 or use the contact form and we’ll give you a straight answer before booking. The full list of what we check.
What we look at
- Pitched roof slopes
- Ceilings below the roof
- Loft conversions
- Commercial roofs
- Insulated roof spaces
- Flat roofs
Signs you need a thermal roof survey in South Ruislip
Some defects simply cannot be seen with the eye. Wet insulation, gaps in insulation and heat loss are often invisible from outside. Thermal imaging gives us another way to look for them.
Things that frequently lead to a survey include:
- Damp that repairs haven’t cured
- Areas of a flat roof that may hold water
- Moisture around outlets and upstands
- Thin or uneven insulation in the roof
Take a building like Deanesfield Primary School: a drone or thermal camera can show a large roof in a single visit.
What to check before booking
- What insurance they carry
- Will the report include photos?
- Their track record with similar roofs
- Which limits apply to the survey
What we do, step by step
We look at the roof from outside and, where it’s relevant and there’s safe access, from inside the roof space too. Inside, we look for staining, damp, gaps and signs of movement. The whole visit usually takes about one to two hours at a house, including the thermal images, and around 3–4 hours for a commercial roof. Surveys in South Ruislip can be booked for any day of the week. London parking is frequently by permit or pay-and-display, so it helps to know what’s near you. A back bedroom window can be the best vantage point for a rear addition, so we may ask to use one.
- We go through the roof, the problem and the weather expected on the day.
- We look over the roof from wherever it is safe.
- Thermal images are taken across the roof and, where there’s safe access, in the loft.
- We take moisture readings where the images suggest a problem.
- Each image is set beside a normal photo and explained in the report.
Before the survey
- Have any paperwork from past roof work to hand
- Tell us about any leaks, stains or damp patches you know of
- If it is not your property yet, arrange access through the agent
