About our thermal roof survey in South Harrow
Our thermal survey records how the surface temperature varies across your roof. Those patterns can point to trapped moisture, missing insulation or heat escaping. It is important to know that the camera shows temperature, not water, so findings are checked with moisture readings. Thermal imaging is included in our Premium Survey, from £400. Conditions on the day affect the results, and the report explains how. Common reasons to book are patches of heat loss across the roof and moisture around outlets and upstands, on pitched roof slopes, insulated roof spaces and ceilings below the roof.
Flying in London takes more checking than most places: there are flight restriction zones around Heathrow, London City and London Heliport, and restricted areas over Hyde Park, the City of London and the Isle of Dogs. Before a drone goes up in South Harrow, the address is checked against all of them, and where permission is needed, the flight waits for it.
How fast the report arrives depends on the package: the Basic Survey within 48 hours, the Standard Survey in 24 to 48 hours and the Premium Survey on the same day.

South Harrow: your questions answered
Is parking a problem for a survey in South Harrow?
Parking in South Harrow, as in most of London, takes a little planning: a visitor permit or a bay close to the door helps a lot, so mention what’s available when booking.
Is my home in South Harrow listed or in a conservation area?
Check Historic England’s online list first, then ask the council about conservation areas and any Article 4 direction. It matters most if you’re planning to re-roof in a different material.
Will the survey show heat loss through my roof?
Thermal images can suggest where heat is escaping and where insulation may be missing. We don’t give energy ratings or heat loss calculations, but the images show where improvements may help.
What can thermal imaging tell me about my roof?
The images show how warm or cool each part of the surface is. Unusual patterns can point to trapped water, gaps in insulation or heat escaping, and we check them with moisture readings.
Will you photograph what you find?
Yes. Photographs are taken throughout the survey, and they go into the written report.
Can you survey at the weekend?
Surveys run on weekdays, Saturdays and Sundays. To find a day that suits you, call 07833 053749 or drop us an email.
Will thermal imaging find my leak?
It is a useful tool for tracing leaks, but not the only one. What it shows depends on the weather and the roof. Where it can’t be pinned down, the report suggests a next step, such as electronic leak detection.
Checking the roof from ground level
A lot can be seen from the ground. Binoculars help you spot slipped slates or tiles, gaps along the ridge and a leaning stack. Please don’t climb up for a closer look.
After strong wind, take a look from the pavement or garden: broken slates or tiles in the garden, gaps along the ridge or loose lead are signs to note. Do not go up yourself.
Drones, thermal imaging and South Harrow roofs
South Harrow is about 3 miles from RAF Northolt. If your survey includes the drone, we check the Drone Safety Map for restrictions before flying. Outer London has plenty of Victorian and Edwardian terraces with slate roofs, but also a great many interwar semis, often with hipped roofs in clay or concrete tiles. On a semi of that age, the small roofs over the bays, the hip tiles and any later dormer each need their own look. A drone or thermal camera adds most on the steep, tall and hidden parts of roofs like these.
Northolt Manor, about 1.5 miles south-west, is one of the historic houses in the wider area around South Harrow. A drone or thermal survey doesn’t involve any work on the roof, which suits older buildings. For a London address like South Harrow, it’s useful to know about controlled parking before the day, along with any off-street space.

When to book a survey in South Harrow
Cold rooms under a roof, or high heating bills, lead some people to ask about heat loss. Missing or slipped insulation can stand out as temperature differences, particularly when it’s warm inside and cold outside.
Signs worth acting on include:
- Damp where roofs meet walls and chimneys
- Ceilings that feel colder in places
- Damp around roof outlets and upstands
- Gaps in loft insulation
For businesses in and around places such as St. George's Shopping Centre, big, flat commercial roofs are where close-up aerial shots and thermal images help most.

How the survey works
It helps to start with what’s prompted the survey: buying, a leak, storm damage, new work or just wanting to know where things stand. It helps us focus on what matters most to you. Most visits take between one and two hours at a house, including the thermal images, and around 3–4 hours for a commercial roof. London terraces rarely offer a view of the whole roof from one spot, so in South Harrow we work round the house, using the street, the windows, the loft and any safe vantage point behind it. If other people live in the building, tell us who can let us into the shared parts.
- We start with the roof, its history and any signs of damp or heat loss.
- We check the conditions and note how they may affect the images.
- We inspect the roof and take thermal images during the same visit.
- Moisture readings are used to check what the camera shows.
- You get the report the same day, with an in-person consultation to follow.
Preparing for the visit
- Leave a clear route to the loft
- Jot down any questions you want answered
- Keep pets in another room

For landlords and managing agents
We also survey roofs for businesses and commercial landlords. Bigger roofs take more time, and they’re priced for the size.
Letting agents can arrange access with tenants. Surveys run seven days a week, which can make access easier.
What a thermal roof survey doesn’t cover
To be straight with you, a roof survey has limits:
- Whether the deck or roof structure is strong enough
- Proving moisture from the images alone
- Readings unaffected by sun, shade or reflections
If in doubt, phone 07833 053749 or send us an email and we’ll suggest the right survey before you book. What our survey covers.

Why it’s worth a survey now in South Harrow
Thermal images can suggest the extent of wet areas without cutting into the roof. That helps you and your roofer decide what really needs replacing. Many older London roofs have only old felt under the slates, or no underlay at all, so once the slates or flashings let water past, little stops it reaching ceilings. Left unchecked, water soaks into timber and plaster and the damage spreads.
