Tovil Thermal Roof Survey
Thermal imaging to find moisture and heat loss patterns in a roof across Tovil, using drones and thermal imaging where applicable. Call or email for a price.
- Gaps in loft insulation
- Damp where roofs meet walls and chimneys
- Cold spots on ceilings under the roof
What you can safely check yourself
After heavy rain, check ceilings and the tops of walls for new stains. Take a photo and write down when you saw it, which helps when we look at the roof.
You can learn a lot from ground level. With binoculars, look for slipped or missing slates and tiles, gaps along the ridge and leaning chimneys. Please don’t climb up for a closer look.
Thermal roof survey in Tovil
A thermal imaging roof survey uses a thermal camera to show differences in surface temperature across a roof. Those patterns can point to trapped moisture, missing insulation or heat escaping. It is important to know that the camera shows temperature, not water, so we check what it shows with moisture readings. Thermal imaging is included in our Premium Survey, from £400. The report also notes the conditions on the day, since they affect what the camera can show. We survey pitched roof slopes, commercial roofs and ceilings below the roof, and people most often book us about water getting in at parapets and stacks and damp around roof outlets and upstands.
Even in a smaller place like Tovil, there may be airfields or restrictions nearby, so every drone flight starts with a check of the Drone Safety Map. Open ground can mean stronger wind, which also affects whether a small drone can fly, while thermal imaging also works best with little wind. Neighbours’ privacy is part of planning each flight, along with the airspace and the weather.
Pictures do a lot of the work in our reports, because a photo of a cracked flashing says more than a paragraph. If something couldn’t be seen safely, the report is clear about it.

Flying and imaging in Tovil
There are several hotels within about a mile and a half of Tovil, and like offices and blocks, hotels often sit under flat roofs. For hotels and other commercial buildings, large roofs are where photos from the air and thermal images show the most at once. Where the drone is part of the survey, the flight is checked against the Drone Safety Map first.
If you look after a shop, office or commercial unit, for example near Fremlin Walk, a commercial roof can be photographed from above without anyone walking on it. Stoneacre lies about 3.1 miles east, so building around Tovil goes back a long way. Photos from the air and thermal images let an old roof be checked without anyone disturbing it. If you look after a building like Archbishop Courtenay Primary School, big roofs are where aerial photos and thermal images show the most at once.
Tovil is about 1 mile west of Maidstone, in Kent. We cover Tovil and the rest of Kent, as part of our work across London and South East England. Our area takes in places right across Kent, from the larger towns to small villages.
All of ME16 and ME15 is within our area for thermal roof surveys, from the main roads to the quietest streets. That includes homes and businesses on Tovil Road, Wharf Road and Bower Lane and the roads around them. Close by, we survey roofs in Maidstone (1 mile east), Foley Park (2 miles north-east), Penenden Heath (2 miles north-east), Shepway (2 miles south-east) and Ringlestone (2 miles north). Within a short drive, we also cover Sittingbourne (11 miles north-east), Sevenoaks (14 miles west), Royal Tunbridge Wells (14 miles south-west), Gravesend (13 miles north-west), Tonbridge (11 miles south-west) and Northfleet (14 miles north-west).
Local landmarks in Tovil
We work in homes and buildings around River Len LNR, St Augustine Academy and Oakwood Park Grammar School and the streets around them. The nearest railway station is Maidstone West station, about 0.5 miles north-east. A little further out are Kent Fire Brigade Museum (less than half a mile south-east) and Allington Castle (2 miles north). For a walk, there’s Boxley Hills and Burham Down.
Why it’s worth a survey now in Tovil
A damp patch that keeps coming back usually has a cause that hasn’t been found. Combining the camera with moisture readings can help find it, instead of trying repair after repair. Blocked gutters on homes around Tovil overflow and soak walls. Dealing with the cause is simple; drying out a wall is not.
Our price is from £400, including VAT. What you pay depends on how big and how high the roof is, how it can be seen safely and which survey you book.

What happens on the day
Every visit follows the same pattern: we hear what you’ve seen, inspect the roof from every safe vantage point, photograph what we find and record our findings for the written report. It typically takes between one and two hours at a house, including the thermal images, and around 3–4 hours for a commercial roof. In a smaller place like Tovil, as anywhere, the forecast plays a part: the parts that need calm, dry weather are planned around it.
- We go through the roof, the problem and the weather expected on the day.
- We look over the roof from wherever it’s safe.
- Thermal images are taken across the roof and, where there’s safe access, in the loft.
- We take moisture readings where the images suggest a problem.
- The report pairs each thermal image with a photo and explains what it suggests.
Before the survey
- Leave a clear route to the loft
- Jot down any questions you want answered
- Keep pets inside or away from the areas we are looking at

Advice
How we price thermal roof surveys
The price reflects the time and kit the roof needs. That comes down to:
- How complicated the roof is, with its valleys, chimneys and parapets
- Any need for thermal images or a drone flight
- Extensions, dormers and garages with roofs of their own
- Which survey package you book
Bigger, taller and commercial roofs take more time to survey, so the price reflects that. You will know the figure before booking.
Helping us price your survey
Here’s what helps us most when you get in touch:
- Your timetable, such as an exchange date
- The address and postcode of the property
- Photos of the roof, taken safely from ground level or a window
- Where water is showing inside, if it is
If you are buying, it is useful to book soon after your offer is accepted, so you have the findings in time to act on them before you exchange. Otherwise, simply call 07833 053749 or send us an email whenever suits you.
What a thermal roof survey doesn’t cover
In fairness, a roof survey has limits:
- A formal energy assessment
- Whether the deck or roof structure is strong enough
- Seeing water directly, as the camera shows temperature, not moisture
Not sure which survey suits your roof? You can phone 07833 053749 or drop us an email and we will tell you before you book. What our survey covers.

Questions from Tovil
Is Tovil within the area you cover?
Yes, Tovil is on our map. Villages and rural addresses get the same survey as a town house.
Is my home in Tovil listed or in a conservation area?
We can’t confirm that for you, but Historic England’s list and your council can. A change of roofing material may need consent in either case.
Does thermal imaging work on slate and tile roofs?
It can be useful, though pitched roofs are normally harder to read. The air space under slates and tiles can hide patterns, so we combine it with an inspection from the loft where there is safe access.
What will the report tell me?
It sets out what we found, why it matters and what we recommend, with photos throughout. Anything we couldn’t see safely is noted too.
How do I arrange a thermal roof survey in Tovil?
Simply phone 07833 053749 or email us. We’ll ask a few questions, confirm the price and agree a date.
Can you inspect my roof with a drone?
Yes, where it applies and safe. We fly a sub-250g drone and we are a CAA-registered drone operator (Flyer ID and Operator ID). It is included in the Drone Roof Survey and, where applicable, the Premium Survey.
What happens next?
The report arrives by email, with photos and clear recommendations. The Standard Survey includes a follow-up consultation, and the Premium Survey an in-person consultation.
Different roofs, different checks
Pitched slate and tile roofs
Inside the roof space, thermal images can help with damp around stacks, valleys and roof windows. Findings are checked with moisture readings.
Loft insulation
The difference is clearest when the home is heated and it’s cold out. Our report notes how the conditions affected the images.
