Storm damage roof reports for homes and businesses in Tovil
Our storm damage report gives you an independent, written record of how a storm has affected your roof. We record each area of damage, photograph it and note the likely cause. It’s yours to pass to your insurer. The decision on any claim rests with your insurer and its policy wording. We are not loss adjusters and can’t say whether a claim will be paid. If you’ve noticed loose or broken chimney pots and cowls and water coming in after the storm, we can find out what’s behind it, on flashings, gutters and fascias and flat roofs alike.
Chimney stacks on older houses around places like Tovil can let water in, through worn flaunching, failed pointing or lifted flashings. Damp on a chimney breast isn’t always rain from above, which is why it is worth tracing properly. The stack, its flashings and the loft space beside it are all worth checking.
With the Standard Survey, you also get moisture detection, a structural check and a follow-up consultation. The Premium Survey adds thermal imaging, drone inspection where applicable, structural analysis and an in-person consultation.

Honest limits
In fairness, a roof survey has limits:
- Acting for you with the insurer
- The outcome of a claim
- Estimates of repair costs
Not sure which survey suits your roof? You can call 07833 053749 or drop us an email and we will tell you. What our survey covers.
What we check
- Slate and tile slopes
- Chimney stacks
- Gutters and fascias
- Ridges and hips
- Flashings
- Flat roofs
Tips from our surveys
From years of surveys, a few habits stand out as worth the effort:
- Hold on to fallen pieces of the roof where you can
- Arrange temporary cover with a roofer if rain is getting in
- Take photos from ground level or a window, never by climbing
- Keep receipts for any emergency work
If a claim is declined and you disagree, the first step is a complaint to the insurer. If that does not resolve it, the Financial Ombudsman Service may be able to help.
Check the roof from ground level after strong winds. Binoculars help you spot slipped slates or lifted ridges. Never climb onto the roof yourself.
Tovil roofs and the weather
Many older homes in Kent have handmade clay tiles, including Kent peg tiles held by pegs through two holes, and tile-hanging on their upper walls. Oast houses and timber-framed Wealden hall houses are part of the county’s older buildings too. Knowing the roof type helps narrow down where water may be getting in. About 3.1 miles east lies Stoneacre, a reminder of how long the area around Tovil has been built on. Period homes nearby can have lead valleys, tall chimneys and a patchwork of past repairs, and a listed home or one in a conservation area may need consent for changes of material.
Shop and office owners around Fremlin Walk may find that a leak can close part of a shop or office, so finding the cause quickly matters. Trees in and around River Len LNR shed leaves that can end up in nearby gutters, and blocked gutters overflow and soak walls.

Checking the roof from the ground
Look up at the roof after a storm, from ground level: broken slates or tiles in the garden, gaps along the ridge or loose lead are signs to note. Don’t go up yourself.
Your own check is a good start, but it isn’t a survey. You will not see flashings, valleys or the backs of chimneys properly from ground level, and those are details a survey looks at closely.

How the survey works
We work from the outside in: first the slopes, edges and gutters from every safe viewpoint, then the roof space where it can be reached. All told, expect about one to two hours at a house, and longer if the damage is spread across a large roof. Being in a smaller place like Tovil doesn’t change how the visit works: outside, inside and from any safe vantage point, in that order. It helps to show us anything you’ve already noticed.
- We note the date of the storm and the damage you’ve seen.
- The roof is inspected from safe positions.
- Each area of damage is photographed and described.
- We note the likely cause and any signs of older wear.
- You get a written report to pass to your insurer.
Preparing for the visit
- Find any records of previous roof work
- Have keys ready for side gates, garages or roof access doors
- Show us where any leaks or stains appear

What we look for on each type of roof
Clay and concrete tiles
Broken or missing tiles leave the underlay exposed to rain. We photograph each gap.
Ridge and hip tiles
A lifted ridge tile can let water into the roof. We photograph and describe the damage.
When to book a survey in Tovil
Falling trees and branches can damage roofs in high winds. We record the damage and where it is, with photographs.
People typically book a survey after spotting something like this:
- Water coming in after the storm
- Holes or cracks caused by debris
- Damaged gutters and fascias
- Flat roof edges peeled back
If you look after a building such as Archbishop Courtenay Primary School, water through a big roof can travel a long way before it drips, so the search covers more than the obvious spot.
Before you book any roof surveyor
- Will they check the loft as well as the outside?
- Are they insured for the work?
- How long the report takes to arrive
- How they plan to inspect the roof safely
