Thermal roof surveys for homes and businesses in Westwick Row
A thermal camera can help when the cause of damp is not obvious. Water can travel some distance under a roof covering before it shows inside, and the camera can show patterns that help us follow it. The images are used alongside a visual inspection and moisture readings, so no conclusion rests on one method alone. If you are worried about damp around roof outlets and upstands and areas losing heat at the eaves and junctions, we can find out what’s behind it, whatever the roof.
In a small place like Westwick Row, open ground can mean strong wind. A small drone cannot fly safely in strong wind or a downpour, and thermal imaging works best with little wind. The visit is planned around the forecast, along with the journey and access. If the day turns windy or wet, the visit can be moved.
What you get is a clear record of the roof on the day we saw it. That makes it useful now and a handy reference later.

Roof by roof
GRP fibreglass roofs
Cracks in GRP can let water into the boards beneath. We look at cracks by eye and use the images to see whether there’s a pattern around them.
Loft insulation
From inside the loft, thermal imaging can show gaps in insulation and cold spots. We inspect the loft where it can be reached safely.
Landlords, agents and block managers in Westwick Row
Roof problems in a rented home affect tenants as well as the building. A survey shows what needs attention, so you can plan the work around your tenants.
Letting agents can arrange access with tenants, at a time agreed beforehand. We survey seven days a week, which can make access easier.
How we price thermal roof surveys
Not every roof costs the same to survey, for these reasons:
- Height and safe access
- House, block, shop or office
- The package you choose: Basic, Standard or Premium
- Any need for thermal images or a drone flight
Simple, low roofs take less time to survey than tall or complicated ones, and the package matters as well. The price is always agreed first.
Helping us price your survey
A little information up front helps. Please include:
- The type of building and roof, such as pitched or flat
- Whether there’s a loft hatch, a shared roof or tricky access
- Pictures of the roof from a safe spot, if you have them
- Any marks or damp showing indoors
We survey roofs seven days a week. To find a date that works for you, call 07833 053749 or use the contact form.
Signs you need a thermal roof survey in Westwick Row
On big commercial and residential flat roofs, thermal imaging helps owners plan. Patterns can point to wet areas and show which parts look sound, so moisture readings can be targeted.
A survey can pick up problems such as:
- Cold areas below the roof
- Possible trapped moisture under a flat roof covering
- Water that travels before it shows
- Wet areas near outlets and upstands
Shop and office owners around Village Arcade St Albans may find that thermal images can show trapped moisture across a wide commercial roof.

What else we do in Westwick Row
What we do, step by step
The visit has one job: to look at the roof as closely as is safe and record what we find. Notes and photos go into the written report. The visit usually takes roughly 1–2 hours on an ordinary house, while a commercial roof takes nearer three to four hours. Older roofs in small places like Westwick Row can have low, tight loft spaces, so it’s useful to know whether there is a loft hatch and how easy it is to reach. We only go where it’s safe.
- We talk through the roof, any damp or leaks, and the weather expected on the day.
- We look at the roof from ground level, from windows and from the roof itself where it’s safe.
- A thermal camera records how the surface temperature varies across the roof.
- We check the patterns that stand out with moisture readings where there’s safe access.
- The report sets out the images, what they suggest and what we recommend.
Preparing for the visit
- Unlock side gates and any roof access doors
- Note where any stains or damp appear
- If you’re buying, let the agent know when we are coming
Arrange a survey
If you are buying, it helps to book soon after your offer is accepted, so you have the findings in time to act on them before you exchange. For any other survey, just phone 07833 053749 or drop us an email when you are ready.

Tips from our surveys
Here are a few things we’d tell any owner:
- Remember the conditions on the day affect the results
- Check the loft can be reached safely
- Keep the heating on as usual before a heat loss survey
- Let us know where and when you’ve seen damp or stains
If you’re buying, the report gives you specific points to raise with the seller or agent. It is your decision how to use it, whether you ask for work before completion or discuss the price.
Keep an eye on ceilings under the roof for new stains. Catching a leak early stops insulation getting soaked.
Westwick Row questions
Is my home in Westwick Row listed or in a conservation area?
We can’t confirm that for you, but Historic England’s list and your council can. Both listing and conservation areas can limit changes of roofing material, and councils can also use Article 4 directions.
Will you come out to Westwick Row?
Yes, smaller places are covered as well as towns. Our area covers London and South East England. Let us know about access, parking and anything unusual about getting there when booking.
Do you take photos of the roof?
Yes. The report includes photographs of what we found, so you can see each point for yourself.
How much does a thermal roof survey cost?
Thermal imaging is included in our Premium Survey, from £400. That also includes a full inspection, a drone inspection where applicable, structural analysis and a same-day report.
Is thermal imaging useful on pitched roofs?
It can show heat loss and some damp, but it has more limits there. Our report is clear about what can be read from them, and back them up with a visual inspection and moisture readings.
Is it the same as a RICS Level 2 or Level 3 survey?
No. Our survey is a roof survey, not a RICS Level 2 or Level 3 survey of the whole building. It focuses on the roof and can sit alongside a RICS survey.
How experienced are you?
We’ve been surveying roofs for over 20 years and have completed over 5,000 surveys across London and South East England.
Airspace, weather and Westwick Row roofs
If the drone is used for your survey, the flight is checked against the Drone Safety Map first. Hemel Hempstead, which Westwick Row is part of, is one of England’s post-war new towns. Many homes in the new towns date from the post-war decades, with concrete interlocking tiles, low-pitched roofs and flat-roofed garages and porches. Low pitches and flat-roofed additions are hard to see from ground level, so aerial and thermal views add detail.
For an older house near a landmark such as Church of Holy Trinity, thin or patchy insulation under an old roof often shows up clearly on a thermal image. Take a building like Leverstock Green Church of England Primary School: thermal images can show where wet insulation sits under a big flat roof.
Westwick Row is about 2 miles east of Hemel Hempstead, in Hertfordshire. Westwick Row is part of the area we cover as part of our work across London and South East England. Our area takes in places right across Hertfordshire. We also survey roofs in London.
