Chimney surveys for homes and businesses in Chalvey
Damp on a chimney breast can have several causes. Water may be getting in at the top through cracked flaunching or an uncapped pot, through the brickwork, or at the flashings. Condensation inside an unventilated stack is another common cause. We check each possibility and record what we find. That points the work in the right direction. If you’re worried about damp patches on chimney breasts and disused chimneys trapping moisture, we can find out what’s behind it, on flaunching, shared and party-wall stacks and lead flashings alike.
Trees around homes in smaller places like Chalvey drop leaves, twigs and moss onto roofs and into gutters. Once gutters and outlets block, water spills over and soaks the walls. It’s the kind of slow problem a roof report picks up early. Plants growing from a gutter or moss on the tiles are signs worth noting from ground level.
Where we cannot see part of the chimney stack, the report says so. You’ll know exactly what was inspected and what wasn’t.

The survey, step by step
You don’t need to do much on the day. Show us any stains, drips or problem areas you know about, and we’ll take it from there. The survey itself takes about 1–2 hours at most homes, while a commercial roof takes nearer three to four hours. A visit to Chalvey is planned like any other: the time, the access and where to park are agreed ahead of time. Weekday and weekend visits are both possible. Let us know about any garages, outbuildings or extensions you want included.
- First we talk through the stacks, their history and any problems.
- We check every stack from wherever it can safely be seen.
- We photograph and record the pots, flaunching, pointing and flashings.
- Inside, the chimney breasts and the loft are checked for damp where there is access.
- You get a written report with photos and recommendations by email.

DIY checks: what’s safe
It helps to keep a record: when leaks happen, ground-level photos and any past roof work. Share it with us as you book, as it helps us focus the survey.
If you have a loft with safe access, take a look inside. Use a torch and stay on the joists or boards, checking for stains, damp wood or chinks of daylight.
Chimney surveys around Chalvey
Across the South East, older homes tend to have slate or clay tiles, and many later ones concrete tiles, and flat-roofed additions turn up almost everywhere. Each of these coverings has its own weak points, from fixings and valleys to flashings, chimneys and gutters. With Windsor Castle about 1.6 miles south, Chalvey sits in an area with a long building history. Older roofs in the wider area can hide decades of patch repairs, so the detail matters, and a listed home or one in a conservation area may need consent for changes of material.
Landlords with a home close to Slough station may find that a roof report between tenancies helps plan work before a small defect becomes a tenant’s leak. Take an older house close to Church of St Peter: its chimney, valleys and lead work are likely to be the parts that need attention first.

Why get it checked now?
Chimneys are easy to forget because you rarely see the top of them. Defects tend to go unseen until there is a stain. Surveying the stack now can catch problems first. Blocked gutters on homes around Chalvey overflow and soak walls. It’s easy to sort the cause early and slow to dry a damp wall.
There are three survey packages: Basic from £150, Standard from £250 and Premium from £400, all inc. VAT. What your roof costs depends on its size, access and what you want to find out.

Different roofs, different checks
Brick stacks
Older brick stacks frequently have soft lime mortar. We note where repairs should match the original mortar.
Rendered stacks
We cannot see the bricks behind render without it being opened up, so the report says what can and can’t be judged.
When to book a survey in Chalvey
Years of fires can affect the mortar inside a stack. Mortar can deteriorate unevenly from flue gases and moisture, which is one reason stacks start to lean.
A survey can pick up problems such as:
- Bricks with flaking faces
- Flaunching that has broken away
- Signs that a stack is leaning
- Disused chimneys trapping moisture
Homes near green spaces such as Herschel Park can get more leaves in their gutters in autumn, and an overflowing gutter soon means a wet wall.

Chalvey: your questions answered
Will you come out to Chalvey?
Yes, Chalvey is covered. We survey roofs across London and the South East, from towns to the smallest villages. Longer journeys are simply planned beforehand.
Do you survey roofs for landlords with property near Slough station?
Yes, landlords and agents are among the people we work for. You can ring 07833 053749 or drop us an email with the address and what you need, and we will talk through which survey suits.
How long does the survey take?
Expect it to take about one to two hours on an ordinary house, and more on a big or complicated roof. You will then get the report by email, on the timescale of your package.
Does the report include photos?
Yes, plenty. Pictures sit next to the findings they show, so you can see what we mean.
How can you see the top of the stack?
We inspect from wherever is safe: the ground, nearby windows and higher points, and the roof space. Our Premium Survey includes a drone inspection where it applies. If part of a stack cannot be seen, the report says so.
Will you walk on the roof?
Only if it is safe. We inspect what can be seen safely: from ground level, from windows and vantage points, from the roof space, from the roof itself where safe and by drone where it applies. Anything we cannot see is noted in the report.
Will you fly a drone over my roof?
Where it helps and the rules allow, yes. Our sub-250g drone is flown by a CAA-registered operator with a Flyer ID and Operator ID, and every flight depends on the airspace and the weather.
Useful tips for Chalvey property owners
Nothing here needs a ladder. A few suggestions:
- Use a Gas Safe registered engineer for gas appliances
- Ask about consent before removing a chimney on an older property
- Check your stacks from the ground after strong winds
- Keep the report to compare against at the next survey
Once we’ve been, the findings are written up with photos. It covers the pots, flaunching, pointing, brickwork and flashings, and any damp we found inside. Turnaround is within 48 hours for Basic, 24 to 48 hours for Standard and the same day for Premium.
Keep an eye on chimney breasts for new damp patches. The sooner damp is spotted, the easier the cause is to find.
