Chimney surveys for Hammer homes and businesses

Practical tips

There is plenty you can do without going near the roof. What helps most:

  • File photos of the stacks with your home records
  • Note any damp on chimney breasts and when it appears
  • Remove aerials or dishes from the stack if they’re no longer needed
  • Leave close inspection to people with safe access

If anything in the report isn’t clear, just ask us. Standard Surveys come with a follow-up consultation, and Premium Surveys with an in-person one.

Check fixings on the stack are sound and taken off if they’re no longer needed. Removing unused fixings takes strain off the brickwork.

Chimney surveys for homes and businesses in Hammer

A chimney survey looks at the stack and everything around it: the pots and cowls, the flaunching on top, the pointing, the brickwork and the flashings where it meets the roof. Inside, we check chimney breasts and the stack in the loft where it is safe to reach. The findings come in a written report with photos and recommendations. We survey single stacks on houses and groups of stacks on bigger buildings. We survey lead flashings, brick chimney stacks and shared and party-wall stacks, and common reasons people get in touch are lifted or split lead flashings and damaged chimney pots and cowls.

Some older homes in villages like Hammer are listed or in a conservation area. That can affect what materials can be used when work is done, so check with the council before planning anything. A roof report helps you plan work with that in mind. Older materials such as clay tiles, slate and stone are frequently matched when work is done.

Report times depend on the survey you book: Basic within 48 hours, Standard in 24–48 hours and Premium the same day.

Hammer homes and their roofs

England has around 10,000 conservation areas and about 500,000 listed buildings. If your home is listed, changes that affect its special interest need listed building consent, and in a conservation area re-roofing in different materials may need permission, so check with the council. Handmade clay tiles and tile-hung walls are typical of Surrey’s older houses. A few of Surrey’s oldest buildings have heavy Horsham stone slab roofs. Whatever the covering, it’s often the fixings, flashings, valleys and gutters that give out first.

If you own a rental within reach of Haslemere station, a dated record of the roof is useful when planning maintenance across a let. Take a building like Woolmer Hill School: large buildings have long gutter runs and big roofs that need checking like any other. Take an older house close to St. Stephen's Church: its chimney, valleys and lead work are likely to be the parts that need attention first.

Hammer is about 9 miles south of Farnham, in Surrey. We cover Hammer and the rest of Surrey, as part of our work across London and South East England. Across Surrey, we cover Hammer and the places around it. Our Guildford page covers surveys nearby.

If you are just outside Hammer, we cover Woolmer Hill (1 mile south), Hammer Bottom (1 mile west), Shottermill (1 mile east), Bramshott Chase (1 mile north) and Linchmere (1 mile south-west). Larger places within reach include Guildford (14 miles north-east), Farnham (9 miles north), Cranleigh (12 miles east), Ash (11 miles north), Godalming (9 miles north-east) and Farncombe (10 miles north-east).

DIY checks: what’s safe

Watch the gutters in a downpour, from a window or the ground. Water spilling over the edge can be a sign of a blockage or a gutter that has dropped.

After strong wind, take a look from the pavement or garden: broken slates or tiles in the garden, gaps along the ridge or loose lead are signs to note. Don’t go up yourself.

Leave it or get it looked at?

If you are thinking of removing or reducing a stack, it’s useful to know its condition first. In a conservation area or on a listed building, changes may need permission from the council and the council can advise. For an older or listed building in a place like Hammer, repairs may need matching materials and consent, so leaving a defect until it’s urgent leaves less time to plan.

Simple, low roofs take less time to survey than tall or complicated ones, and the package you pick makes a difference too. We will give you the figure before anything is booked.

Why us?

  • An independent view of the roof
  • Packages from £150, inc. VAT
  • Visits on any day of the week
  • More than 5,000 surveys completed

What affects the cost of chimney surveys

The price reflects the time and kit the roof needs. That comes down to:

  • Basic, Standard or Premium
  • Features like valleys, chimneys, dormers and parapets
  • The height of the building and how the roof can be seen safely
  • How big the roof is

Bigger, taller and commercial roofs take more time to survey, so they’re priced to match. You’ll know the figure before booking.

Booking your survey

You do not need to know any roofing terms. Just tell us:

  • Any deadline, such as an exchange date
  • Any photos you have, taken from ground level or a window
  • Anything about access we should know
  • The kind of building and roof involved

If you have photos of the roof, send them over. Pictures from ground level or a window are fine, and please don’t climb up for a closer look. To send them or to book, call 07833 053749 or email us.

What we cannot see

No survey can tell you everything, and it is better to know them up front. Keep these in mind:

  • Whether the flue is safe to use
  • Whether a stack needs rebuilding on structural grounds
  • Whether a gas appliance or its flue is safe

If in doubt, phone 07833 053749 or drop us an email and we’ll suggest the right survey. The full list of what we check.

What this survey covers

  • Flaunching
  • Shared and party-wall stacks
  • Brick chimney stacks
  • Chimney pots and cowls
  • Lead flashings
  • Chimney breasts

What we do, step by step

There isn’t much for you to do on the day. Show us any stains, drips or problem areas you know about, and we will take it from there. The survey itself takes an hour or two for most homes, a little longer where there are several stacks. Somewhere as small as Hammer, access is often the only tricky part. Mention any outbuildings, barns or garages you want included, and anything about the roof you already know. Visits can be on weekdays, Saturdays or Sundays.

  1. You tell us whether any stacks are shared, unused or leaning.
  2. We check the roof around each stack, including the flashings.
  3. We check the flaunching and pots on every stack.
  4. We note the brickwork, pointing and any sign of leaning.
  5. You receive a written report setting out what needs attention first.

Getting ready for the survey

  • Buyers: confirm access with the estate agent or seller
  • For a flat or shared roof, check access with the building owner or managing agent
  • Leave a clear route to the loft

How to book

Common questions in Hammer

Is my home in Hammer listed or in a conservation area?

For listing, use Historic England’s list; for conservation areas, ask the council. It matters most if you’re planning to re-roof in a different material.

Will you come out to Hammer?

Yes. Hammer is within the area we cover, which takes in towns, villages and rural addresses. We cover the whole of London and South East England. Just mention lanes, gates or anything else about the route when booking.

Should I worry about a leaning stack?

It is worth having a leaning stack checked. Our survey notes how it looks and the condition of the bricks and joints, and if it may be a structural issue, we recommend a structural engineer.

How do you inspect a chimney without scaffolding?

We look from ground level, from windows and from the loft where it is safe. A drone inspection is part of the Premium Survey where it applies. The report is clear about anything that couldn’t be seen.

How long have you been surveying roofs?

We’ve been surveying roofs for over 20 years and have carried out more than 5,000 surveys across London and the South East.

What happens next?

You receive the written report by email, with photographs and recommendations. It’s yours to share with a seller, insurer, roofer or managing agent, whichever applies.

Our stack is shared. Can you still survey it?

Yes. We inspect whatever is safely visible and what you give us access to. If a defect seems to be on your neighbour’s side, the report records it and you can raise it with them.
