Common questions in Mongewell
Is my home in Mongewell listed or in a conservation area?
The council and Historic England’s list are the places to check. It’s worth checking before planning roof work, as both can affect what’s allowed.
Can a landlord with a rental near Cholsey station book a roof survey?
Yes, rented property is part of what we cover. You can call 07833 053749 or drop us an email with the address and a few details.
Do I need to be at home?
That depends on the survey. For inside areas and the roof space, someone has to give us access; we will agree the details as you book.
How do I arrange a chimney survey in Mongewell?
To arrange a survey, ring 07833 053749 or use the contact form and let us know the address and what you want to find out. We’ll confirm the price and find a day that suits.
Can you survey at the weekend?
We survey seven days a week: Monday to Friday, Saturdays and Sundays. Let us know which days suit you when booking.
What should I do with a chimney I do not use?
There’s no single answer. The survey shows its condition and how it’s been capped. In a conservation area or on a listed building, changes may need consent.
Do you need to go on the roof to check the chimney?
We use safe viewpoints rather than climbing onto the stack. A drone inspection is part of the Premium Survey where it applies. The report is clear about anything that couldn’t be seen.
Chimney survey in Mongewell
Our chimney survey covers the stack and the details that keep water out around it: the pots and cowls, the flaunching on top, the pointing, the brickwork and the flashings where it meets the roof. Inside, we check chimney breasts and the stack in the loft where it is safe to reach. You get a written report with photographs and our recommendations. We survey single stacks on houses and groups of stacks on bigger buildings. Typical surveys look at damp patches on chimney breasts and gaps in the mortar around the pots, across brick chimney stacks, chimney breasts and shared and party-wall stacks.
Village roofs frequently face open fields and take the full force of wind and rain, so ridges, chimney stacks, flashings and gutters work hard. Older walls take a long time to dry once water gets in. A written report sets out what to deal with and in what order. On exposed older roofs, chimneys and lead flashings are often the first to give way.
With the Standard Survey, you also get moisture detection, a structural check and a follow-up consultation. The Premium Survey goes further, with thermal imaging, drone inspection where applicable, structural analysis and an in-person consultation.

Leave it or get it looked at?
If you are thinking of removing or reducing a stack, it helps to know its condition first. In a conservation area or on a listed building, changes may need permission from the council, so check with them first. In a place like Mongewell, a barn or garage roof left to fail puts whatever is inside at risk. A quick look before winter can save a lot.
Every price we give includes VAT, and the report is not charged as an extra. Prices start from £150, including VAT. Where your roof sits in the range depends on its size, height and access.

Different roofs, different checks
Flaunching
Cracked flaunching is one of the most common chimney defects we record. Caught early, it’s often a small job.
Rendered stacks
Cracked render can let water in and trap it behind. We record any cracking and where it is.

Common roof problems in Mongewell
Flashings seal the gap where a stack passes through the roof. They can lift in wind, crack with age or pull out of the mortar joints. When flashings fail, water often shows up in the loft or on the chimney breast. Lead is also a target for theft.
Look out for signs like these:
- Loose, cracked or missing pots
- Eroded joints in the brickwork
- Redundant stacks capped without ventilation
- Staining on walls around the chimney
Homes near green spaces such as Kinecroft can get more leaves in their gutters in autumn, and an overflowing gutter soon means a wet wall.
Before booking anyone
- Do they have a CAA Flyer ID and Operator ID for drone work?
- Whether they hold professional indemnity and public liability insurance
- Whether VAT is in the quoted price
- Whether the inside of the roof is included
What this survey cannot tell you
We only report everything that’s safely in view on the day, so some things are outside what a survey can do:
- Gas safety checks, which need a Gas Safe registered engineer
- The inside of the flue, which needs a sweep or flue specialist
- Areas we can’t view from safe positions
If you are not sure which survey you need, call 07833 053749 or send us an email and we will give you a straight answer. What our survey covers.
What we check
- Brick chimney stacks
- Chimney pots and cowls
- Shared and party-wall stacks
- Chimney breasts
- Flaunching
- Lead flashings
What you can safely check yourself
Look up at the roof after a storm, from ground level: pieces of tile or slate on the ground, a gap in the ridge or a lifted flashing are all worth noting. Do not go up yourself.
If you have a loft with safe access, take a look inside. Take a torch and only step on boards or joists, checking for stains, damp wood or chinks of daylight.
What happens on the day
Once we’ve finished looking, we write up our findings in a report with photographs. As for time on site, most surveys take roughly 1–2 hours at most homes; commercial roofs usually need 3–4 hours. Cottages and farmhouses around Mongewell often have roofs at several levels, with lean-tos and outbuildings attached. We work round each section in turn, from the safest viewpoints.
- You let us know whether any stacks are shared, unused or leaning.
- We check the roof around each stack, including the flashings.
- We look at the flaunching and pots on every stack.
- Any lean, spalling or worn pointing is recorded.
- The report explains the condition and which work is most urgent.
Before the survey
- Have any paperwork from past roof work to hand
- Mention any parking restrictions on your street
- Keep pets inside or away from the areas we’re looking at

Chimney surveys in Mongewell: local notes
Older buildings in west Oxfordshire often have Cotswold stone slate roofs, and some Oxfordshire villages still have thatch. Older houses in the South East often have slate or clay tile roofs, while many later estates have concrete tiles. Whatever the covering, it is often the fixings, flashings, valleys and gutters that give out first. Historic houses such as Brightwell Manor, about 2.6 miles north-west, show how far back building in the area around Mongewell goes. Older roofs in the wider area can hide decades of patch repairs, so the detail matters, and a listed home or one in a conservation area may need consent for changes of material.
If you look after a building like Crowmarsh Gifford Church of England School, long gutter runs and wide roofs on a building that size are worth checking on a regular cycle. For landlords with property near Cholsey station, a roof report helps you deal with small faults before they turn into a call from a tenant.
