- Damp on a chimney breast inside
What this survey cannot tell you
Before booking, it is worth knowing what a survey won’t do:
- Gas safety checks, which need a Gas Safe registered engineer
- The inside of the flue, which needs a sweep or flue specialist
- Hidden damage within the stack

Chimney survey in Morton: what you get
Our survey covers the structure of the stack and its weathering details. It’s not a flue inspection, a chimney sweep or a gas safety inspection. If you use a fire or a gas appliance, the flue should be checked by a sweep or a Gas Safe registered engineer as appropriate. We’ll tell you if we see anything that suggests they should take a look. If you’re worried about signs that a stack is leaning and bricks with flaking faces, we can find out what’s behind it.
In a village or hamlet like Morton, older cottages and farmhouses often sit alongside barns, outbuildings and a few newer houses. Older roofs may be clay tile, slate, stone or thatch, often with chimneys that have stood a long time. Each needs checking in its own way, and thatch is a specialist material we report on as far as it can be seen. Chimneys and lead flashings on old roofs often need the most attention.
Where we cannot see part of the chimney stack, the report says so. You’ll know exactly what was inspected and what wasn’t, and what we’d suggest next.

Practical tips
Most of what helps is simple and safe from ground level. Our suggestions:
- Check your stacks from the ground after strong winds
- File photos of the stacks with your home records
- Check fixings on the stack are secure
- Photograph damp patches with the date
The report is emailed to you, ready to share with a roofer or builder. Each defect is described in plain words and shown in a photo, so it’s easy to follow.
Have worn pointing and cracked flaunching dealt with early. Small repairs now can save bigger work later.
How we price chimney surveys
To price your survey, we look at:
- Which survey package you book
- Roof area
- If the survey needs thermal imaging or a drone
- Chimneys, valleys, parapets and other details
Thermal imaging and drone inspection (where it applies) come with the Premium Survey, from £400 inc. VAT. We can help you choose the package that fits what you’d like to know.
Getting in touch
We’ll normally ask about:
- What’s prompted the survey
- Where water is showing inside, if it is
- Any deadline, such as an exchange date
- The type of building and roof, like pitched or flat
We survey roofs seven days a week. To arrange a day that suits you, ring 07833 053749 or email us with the address and the days you’d prefer.
Morton homes and their roofs
The coast is about 1 mile or less from Morton, where sea air brings more salt and stronger wind than inland. Metal fixings and flashings corrode faster in salt air, while gales work at loose ridges, slates and tiles. About 0.1 miles north-east lies Morton Manor, a reminder of how long the area around Morton has been built on. Period homes nearby can have lead valleys, tall chimneys and a patchwork of past repairs.
If you own a rental within reach of Brading station, a roof report helps you deal with small faults before they turn into a call from a tenant. Take a building like Brading Church of England Controlled Primary School: a written record of a large roof helps plan work for the holidays rather than in term time.
Morton is about 1 mile north-east of Sandown, in the Isle of Wight. We visit Morton as part of our work across the Isle of Wight, for houses, flats and commercial buildings. Our the Isle of Wight coverage includes Morton and the places around it. Portsmouth is in our area too.
Chimney surveys in PO36 are booked the same way as anywhere else. If you need a chimney survey at a property on New Road, Wrax Road and Morton Road or a nearby road, we can help. Being close to the A3055, Morton is easy for us to reach. We also cover Yarbridge (1 mile north-east), Brading (1 mile north-east), Adgestone (1 mile west), Yaverland (1 mile south-east) and Sandown (1 mile south-west). We also work in nearby towns such as Newport (7 miles west), Ryde (4 miles north), Cowes (9 miles north-west), Shanklin (3 miles south-west), Ventnor (6 miles south-west) and East Cowes (8 miles north-west). If you are somewhere remote, a little more planning is needed, so let us know when you get in touch.

How it works
Every visit follows the same pattern: we hear what you’ve seen, look at the roof from every safe viewpoint, take photos as we go and make notes for the report. It normally takes about 1–2 hours at most homes, and longer for a large or complex roof. For a village or hamlet like Morton, the journey is planned beforehand: let us know about lanes, gates and parking. On the day, we inspect what can safely be seen, inside and out.
- We start with the details: how many stacks, whether any are shared and any signs of damp.
- We inspect each stack from safe viewpoints outside.
- We check and photograph the pots, cowls, flaunching, pointing and flashings.
- Inside, we look for damp on chimney breasts and in the loft where there is safe access.
- You get a written report with photographs and our recommendations.
Before the survey
- If it isn’t your property yet, arrange access through the agent
- Gather any invoices or paperwork from past roof work
- Note where any stains or damp appear

Common roof problems in Morton
Removing a chimney breast inside can leave questions about how the stack is supported. We note what’s visible in the loft space and outside, and recommend a structural engineer where support is in question.
Common reasons to book include:
- Flaunching that has broken away
- Redundant stacks capped without ventilation
- Eroded joints in the brickwork
- Damp on a chimney breast inside
The streets around a church such as St. Mary's Church are often among the oldest in a place, and if you own one of the older houses nearby, corroded nails, tired lead and weathered chimney pointing are the things to watch on older roofs.
Before you book any roof surveyor
- How much experience they have with roofs like yours
- Do they have a CAA Flyer ID and Operator ID for drone work?
- Their insurance cover
- What the report includes, and whether it has photographs
Why get it checked now?
Loose pots and bricks on a stack are a safety concern. Finding them early means they can be dealt with before they come down by a suitable contractor. Older and listed buildings around Morton may need consent and matching materials for repairs, so leaving a defect until it’s urgent leaves less time to plan.
Our price is from £150, including VAT. Basic starts from £150, Standard from £250 and Premium from £400, VAT included, and we can help you choose.

Common questions in Morton
How do I find out if my home in Morton is listed?
For listing, use Historic England’s list; for conservation areas, ask the council. It matters most if you are planning to re-roof in a different material.
I let a flat near Brading station. Can you check the roof?
Yes, landlords and agents book with us as well as owners. You can call 07833 053749 or send us an email with the address and some details, including who will give access on the day.
Do I need to be at home?
Not necessarily. If we only need the outside, we can agree that ahead of time, but anything inside needs someone there to give access.
Can you survey a shared roof?
Yes. Shared roofs just need a little more planning. Mention it when you contact us and we’ll plan the survey around it.
What if it rains on the day?
It can, depending on the survey. Drone flights need calm, dry weather, and thermal imaging works best after a sunny day, with a dry roof and little wind. If the conditions are not right, we will talk to you about another date.
My chimney looks like it’s leaning. What should I do?
Have it checked rather than leaving it. Leaning often comes from mortar breaking down unevenly. We record its condition with photos, and a structural engineer can assess whether it needs work.
Is it a structural engineer’s report?
No. We note visible signs such as sagging or deflection, but we do not carry out calculations or give an engineer’s opinion. Where an engineer is needed, we say so in the report.
