Chimney Survey in The Pound
Independent chimney surveys in The Pound. We have completed more than 5,000 surveys across London and the South East.
- Frost-damaged brickwork on the stack
- Flashings pulling away from the stack
- Gaps in the mortar around the pots
DIY checks: what’s safe
Your own check is a good start, but it isn’t a survey. You won’t see flashings, valleys or the backs of chimneys properly from the ground.
Watch the gutters in a downpour, from a window or the ground. Water spilling over the edge can point to a blockage or a sagging run.
Chimney survey in The Pound
Our chimney survey covers the stack and the details that keep water out around it: the pots and cowls, the flaunching on top, the pointing, the brickwork and the flashings where it meets the roof. We also look for damp on chimney breasts and in the loft where there is safe access. You get a written report with photos and our recommendations. It suits a single stack on a house as well as several on a larger building. If you’ve noticed bricks with flaking faces and gaps in the mortar around the pots, we can find out what’s behind it.
Older buildings in small places like The Pound may be listed or in a conservation area. If yours is, re-roofing in different materials may need consent, so the council is the place to check. A roof report helps you plan work with that in mind. Older materials such as clay tiles, slate and stone are often matched when work is done.
Nothing in the report is left vague: where something needs attention, it says so plainly.

There are three survey packages: the Basic Survey from £150, the Standard Survey from £250 and the Premium Survey from £400, with VAT included. What your roof costs depends on its size, access and what you want to find out.

- The style of property, from a terrace to a block

When to book a survey in The Pound
Removing a chimney breast inside can leave questions about how the stack is supported. We record what we can see in the loft and outside, and recommend a structural engineer where support is in question.
Look out for signs like these:
- Damp patches on chimney breasts
- Worn or missing pointing
- Lifted or split lead flashings
- Loose, cracked or missing pots
If you own a rental within reach of Battle station, the gap between tenancies is a good time to have the roof looked at.

Brick stacks
Older brick stacks often have soft lime mortar. We note where repairs should match the original mortar.
Chimney pots and cowls
Damaged pots are a safety concern as well as a leak risk. We photograph each pot and note any damage.
What a chimney survey does not cover
We only report whatever is safely visible on the day, so some things are outside what a survey can do:
- Hidden damage within the stack
- Checks on boilers, fires or their flues
- Hidden sides of a shared stack

The Pound questions
I let a flat near Battle station. Can you check the roof?
Yes, letting agents and landlords book with us as well as owners. You can call 07833 053749 or send us an email with the address and some details.
Will you come out to The Pound?
Yes, The Pound is on our map. Villages and rural addresses get the same survey as a town house.
What’s in the survey report?
It works through the roof part by part, in writing and with photos, and ends with what we recommend. The most urgent items are made clear.
How many surveys have you done?
Over 5,000 surveys so far, across 20+ years of surveying roofs.
What’s the best way to book?
Just ring 07833 053749 or use the contact form. After a few questions, we confirm the price and fix a day.
Do you need to get into the loft?
If the survey needs it and the loft space can be reached safely, yes. A clear path to the hatch helps, and if the loft cannot be reached safely, the report says so.
Does someone need to be in?
Someone needs to let us in if we’re looking inside or in the loft. We will talk about access as you book.
The survey, step by step
Before we start, let us know why you’ve booked: a purchase, a leak, a storm, new work or simply peace of mind. That way we can focus on what matters to you. The visit usually takes about one to two hours for most houses, with bigger or more complicated roofs taking longer. In a hamlet or village like The Pound, a postcode does not always lead to the right gate, so a few directions, or a note of a nearby landmark, help us arrive on time. After that, the survey runs as it would anywhere.
- First we talk through the stacks, their history and any problems.
- Each stack is inspected from safe positions outside.
- We photograph and record the pots, flaunching, pointing and flashings.
- Inside, the chimney breasts and the loft are checked for damp where there is access.
- You get a written report with photos and recommendations by email.
Before the survey
- Check pets are kept safely away
- Agree roof access with the managing agent if it’s shared
- Let us know about parking near the property

Roofs, chimneys and gutters in The Pound
In Sussex, older roofs are often handmade clay tile, frequently with tile-hanging on the walls below. A few old Sussex buildings still carry heavy Horsham stone slabs, and the county’s older buildings include oast houses and Wealden hall houses. Each of these coverings has its own weak points, from fixings and valleys to flashings, chimneys and gutters. An older home may be listed, or stand in a conservation area. To find out, check Historic England’s list and ask the council about conservation areas. Re-roofing in different materials may need permission there.
Homes near green spaces such as Ashburnham Park can get more leaves in their gutters in autumn, so outlets and downpipes are worth watching. If your house is among the older ones in the streets near Parish Church of St Peter, its roof may have old fixings, lead flashings and chimneys that need a closer look.
