Waterend Chimney Survey
Chimney surveys across Waterend, with over 20 years’ experience behind it. Every survey ends with a written report and photographs.
- Spalled or crumbling bricks
- A chimney out of line
- Gaps in the mortar around the pots
When you need someone else
Our findings are based on what we can see safely on the day, so there are some things a survey can’t cover:
- Flue inspections or sweeping
- A structural engineer’s assessment
- Conditions inside walls

Chimney survey in Waterend: what you get
Many terraced and semi-detached homes share their chimney stacks with a neighbour. We inspect the parts we can see safely and the parts the owner gives us access to. If a defect appears to be on the neighbour’s side, we note it, so you can talk to them. You get a report with photographs and our recommendations. If you are worried about gaps where the stack meets the roof and bricks with flaking faces, we can find out what’s behind it, on shared and party-wall stacks, lead flashings and chimney pots and cowls alike.
Some older homes in villages like Waterend are listed or in a conservation area. If yours is, re-roofing in different materials may need consent, so the council is the place to check. Knowing the roof’s condition helps you plan ahead with that in mind. Where a building is listed, matching the existing roof materials is often expected.
Report times depend on the survey you book: the Basic Survey within 48 hours, the Standard Survey in 24 to 48 hours and the Premium Survey on the same day.

What a survey costs
Not every roof costs the same to survey, and it comes down to:
- Extensions, dormers and garages with roofs of their own
- If the survey needs thermal imaging or a drone
- Height and safe access
- House, block, shop or office
Prices start from £150, including VAT. What you pay depends on the size and height of the roof, access and the package you choose.
Booking your survey
You don’t need to know any roofing terms. Just let us know:
- Anything about access we should know
- Pictures from the garden or a window, if you have them
- Dates you are working to, such as exchange
- Where any leaks, stains or damp patches show inside
Chimney survey starts from £150, including VAT. The exact figure depends on the roof and the package, so ring 07833 053749 or send us an email with the details.
Your questions about chimney surveys in Waterend
I let a flat near Saunderton station. Can you check the roof?
Of course. Let us know whether a tenant or an agent will let us in, and the report can go straight to you or your agent.
Does a conservation area affect roof work in Waterend?
Start with Historic England’s list for listing and your council for conservation areas. It is worth checking before planning roof work, as both can affect what’s allowed.
Do you survey roofs on blocks of flats?
Yes, once whoever controls the roof agrees access. On a shared roof we can only inspect the parts we’re allowed to reach, and the report makes that clear.
What happens after the survey?
You’ll get the report by email, with photos and clear recommendations. With Standard there’s a follow-up consultation; with Premium, an in-person consultation.
How do you inspect a chimney without scaffolding?
We look from ground level, from windows and from the loft where it is safe. Where it applies, our Premium Survey adds a drone inspection for a closer view. The report is clear about anything that couldn’t be seen.
Does this replace a RICS home survey?
No. We’re experienced roof surveyors, and our survey covers the roof rather than the whole building. For the rest of the building, a RICS home survey is a separate job.
Do you cover Waterend?
Yes. We cover Waterend and the rest of Buckinghamshire. To book, ring 07833 053749 or use the contact form.
How it works
When we arrive, we begin with a quick chat about the roof and anything that is worrying you. After that, we check everything we can see safely. Most surveys take between one and two hours for a house, rising to roughly 3–4 hours on a commercial building. Older roofs in small places like Waterend can have low, tight loft spaces, so it’s useful to know whether there’s a loft hatch and how easy it is to reach. Only areas that can be reached safely are inspected.
- You let us know how many stacks there are and any damp or problems you’ve noticed.
- The stacks are looked at from ground level, from windows and from other safe vantage points.
- We check and photograph the pots, cowls, flaunching, pointing and flashings.
- Where there’s safe access, we look at the stack in the loft and the chimney breasts for damp.
- The findings are written up with photos and recommendations and emailed to you.
Getting ready for the survey
- Make a note of anything you’d like us to look at
- If the roof is shared, arrange access with whoever manages the building
- Clear the way to the loft hatch

Advice
Local roofs in Waterend
A number of Buckinghamshire villages keep thatched roofs on their older buildings. In this part of the South East, older roofs are mostly slate or clay tile and many newer ones concrete tile. Each of these coverings has its own weak points, from fixings and valleys to flashings, chimneys and gutters. With West Wycombe Park House about 3.1 miles east, Waterend sits in an area with a long building history. On older houses around here, roofs often carry the marks of earlier repairs, from replaced slates to new lead, and any change of roofing material on a listed home needs checking with the council first.
For landlords with property near Saunderton station, the gap between tenancies is a good time to have the roof looked at. Take an older house close to Church of St Mary: its roof may have old fixings, lead flashings and chimneys that need a closer look. Anyone responsible for a site like Radnage Church of England Primary School will know that long gutter runs and wide roofs on a building that size are worth checking on a regular cycle.
Waterend is about 6 miles west of High Wycombe, in Buckinghamshire. Surveys in Waterend work the same way as everywhere we cover: a careful inspection, photos and a written report. Waterend is one of the places in Buckinghamshire we cover for chimney surveys. Our Reading page covers surveys nearby.

Well-known places in the area include Wycombe Hospital (5.4 miles south-east). Green spaces nearby include Bald Hill and Yoesden.
Roof by roof
Brick stacks
Most chimney stacks are built of brick, with mortar joints that wear over time. The survey looks for crumbling bricks and worn or missing mortar.
Lead flashings
Over time, lead can lift or come away from the brickwork. We photograph any we find that look loose or damaged.
For landlords and managing agents
An agent can book and manage the survey for a landlord, and the report can go to both. Access is agreed with the tenant ahead of time.
Buyers’ agents can book surveys on behalf of their clients. The report is emailed, so it can go straight to your client, photos included.

Can I check my roof myself?
The one thing to avoid is getting up close. Slates, tiles, flat roofs and rooflights can give way, and falls from height are serious. That part is for a survey.
Watch the gutters in a downpour, from a window or the ground. Overflowing water can point to a blockage or a sagging run.
