About our drone roof survey in Aldersbrook
Some roofs are hard or unsafe to reach. A drone takes close-up photographs of those roofs from the air. You see slates, ridges, chimneys, valleys and gutters in detail. Everything we find goes into a written report with photos. It also suits roofs that would be damaged by someone walking on them. If we cannot fly, we tell you why. We survey flat roofs on upper floors, chimney stacks and large and complex roofs, and the problems we’re asked to look at most are chimney tops in poor condition and vegetation in valleys and gutters.
London roofs sit shoulder to shoulder in terraces and blocks, which makes care around neighbours part of the job. We take care to focus on the roof we have been asked to look at, in Aldersbrook as anywhere. Let us know about the building and access as you book. The extra view helps most on steep slopes, tall stacks and rear additions.
The written findings come by email, ready to forward to whoever needs them. Basic reports come within 48 hours, Standard within 24–48 hours and Premium on the day.

Aldersbrook questions
Is drone flying allowed in Aldersbrook?
It depends on the exact address and the weather on the day. Aldersbrook is about 2 miles from the edge of the flight restriction zone around London City Airport. We check the exact boundary for the address before flying, and if the roof falls inside it, we ask for permission first. London’s airspace includes flight restriction zones around Heathrow, London City Airport and London Heliport, and restricted areas over Hyde Park, the City of London and the Isle of Dogs. Every London address is checked against them before a flight. A small drone cannot fly safely in strong wind or a downpour.
Is parking a problem for a survey in Aldersbrook?
Sometimes, yes. Where there are permit zones, a visitor permit or nearby pay-and-display bay works well, and a driveway is even better.
Will I get photos?
Yes. Photos are taken throughout the survey, and the report uses them to show each finding.
Is this an asbestos survey?
No. Asbestos surveys and testing aren’t part of what we do. We flag materials that could contain asbestos, such as cement sheets or soffits on pre-2000 buildings, and recommend a specialist asbestos surveyor checks them before they’re disturbed.
Is it a structural engineer’s report?
No. We note visible signs like sagging or deflection, but we do not carry out calculations or give an engineer’s opinion. Where an engineer is needed, we say so in the report.
What will the report tell me?
Written findings with photos, covering the condition of the roof, the defects we found and what we recommend. The Standard Survey adds moisture detection and a structural check, and the Premium Survey adds thermal imaging, drone inspection where it applies and structural analysis.
Is this a RICS survey?
No. Our survey looks at the roof, not the whole building. If you need a full building survey, you will need a RICS survey as well.

What a drone roof survey looks like in Aldersbrook
Aldersbrook is about 2 miles from the edge of the flight restriction zone around London City Airport. We check the exact boundary for the address before flying, and if the roof falls inside it, we ask for permission first. We fly a sub-250g drone and are a CAA-registered drone operator (Flyer ID and Operator ID). Flights in the open category stay under 120 m (400 ft), with the drone kept in sight.
For site and facilities teams at buildings such as Aldersbrook Primary School, big roofs are where aerial photos and thermal images show the most at once. Controlled parking zones are common in London, so mention any permit rules for Aldersbrook. A roof leak in a hotel or guest house around Aldersbrook means lost rooms as well as repairs, so it pays to find faults before guests do.

How the survey works
Photos are taken throughout the visit, so you can see in the report what we found and where. We take close-ups from wherever is safe, including by drone where it is applicable and the weather allows. Most surveys take about one to two hours at a house, including the airspace and weather checks before take-off. Many London properties are flats or terraces with no side access, so the back of the roof is frequently seen from upstairs windows, from inside or, where a flight is allowed, from the air. Mention any building rules, key holders or managing agents as you book.
- We start with the address and what you’d like checked.
- Airspace restrictions are checked and permission sought where needed.
- On the day, we check the wind, weather and site before flying.
- Close-up photos are taken of each slope, chimney, valley and gutter, with the drone always in view.
- The findings, photos and recommendations reach you by email.

How the survey changes by roof type
Ridges and hips
Ridges may be bedded in mortar or mechanically fixed. We record what we see of their condition.
Large commercial roofs
Big roofs on offices, warehouses and units take time to inspect. The drone covers the roof area by area, so nothing is skipped.
Should I look at the roof myself first?
You can learn a lot from the ground. With binoculars, look for slipped or missing slates and tiles, gaps along the ridge and leaning chimneys. Never climb onto the roof to look.
During heavy rain, look at the gutters from ground level or a window. Overflowing water can point to a blockage or a sagging run.

Tips from our surveys
From years of surveys, a few habits stand out as worth the effort:
- Keep dogs indoors during the visit
- Allow time for permission if you are in a flight restriction zone
- Mention anything you’ve noticed on the roof
- Move stored items away from the hatch
We email the report to you, including the close-up photos taken by the drone. Findings are set out in plain English, and recommendations are ranked by urgency where that helps.
Do not block the vents at the eaves. Condensation in the loft can damage timbers and insulation, and it is something only an inside check will show. Keep insulation clear of the eaves.
Why act early in Aldersbrook
A drone record gives you a baseline. Comparing them with later photos shows what has changed. It helps when you plan ahead. Blocked gutters and hoppers on London houses overflow and soak brickwork, which can lead to damp inside. A blocked outlet ignored for a winter or two can mean damp walls inside.
Prices start from £150, including VAT, for a Basic Survey. Standard is from £250 and Premium from £400. You will know the price for your roof before booking.
