How a drone roof survey works in Little Ilford

Drone surveys suit tall houses, blocks of flats, steep roofs and large commercial roofs. They’re useful where walking on the roof could damage it or is not safe, such as old slate, clay tiles or cement sheets. You get close-up views without anyone setting foot on the roof. Before the visit, we check the address for any airspace restrictions that apply. If a drone is not the right tool, we will say so. If you’ve noticed cracked mortar along the ridge and worn lead at chimneys and walls, a survey will tell you what’s going on, on tall and steep roofs, chimney stacks and fragile roofs alike.

London airspace is busy and tightly controlled: there are flight restriction zones around Heathrow, London City and London Heliport, and restricted areas over Hyde Park, the City of London and the Isle of Dogs. Every address in Little Ilford is checked before any drone flight, and where permission is needed, the flight waits for it.

The Standard Survey adds moisture detection, a structural check and a follow-up consultation. The Premium Survey goes further, with thermal imaging, drone inspection where applicable, structural analysis and an in-person consultation.

Can I check my roof myself?

A DIY look is useful, but it is not a survey. You will not see flashings, valleys or the backs of chimneys properly from the ground.

A lot can be seen from ground level. Binoculars help you spot slipped slates or tiles, gaps along the ridge and a leaning stack. Never climb onto the roof to look.

Drones, thermal imaging and Little Ilford roofs

The flight restriction zone around London City Airport comes within about 1 mile of Little Ilford. We check the exact boundary for the address before flying, and if the roof falls inside it, we ask for permission first. Within a mile and a half or so of Little Ilford there are several hotels, and like offices and blocks, hotels often sit under flat roofs. If you look after one, a large roof can be surveyed without guests having anyone working above them.

Historic houses such as Valentines Mansion, about 1.5 miles north, show how far back building around Little Ilford goes. Older roofs nearby can be steep and hard to see from ground level, and a survey by drone or thermal camera does not touch the roof itself. Take an older house close to St Michael's Church: steep roofs, tall chimneys and hidden valleys can be hard to see from the ground, and that’s where a view from above or with a thermal imager helps. Take a building like Sir John Heron Primary School: a drone or thermal camera can show a large roof in a single visit.

The survey, step by step

Expect us to ask a few questions before we start, about the roof’s history, any leaks and past repairs. Then the inspection itself takes an hour or two for a house, and more on a big or complicated roof. In Little Ilford, visits are available on weekdays and at weekends. London parking is often by permit or pay-and-display, so it is useful to know what’s near you, and to clear a path to the loft hatch. Upstairs rooms at the back are useful too, as they frequently give the best view of a rear addition.

  1. We start with the address and what you’d like checked.
  2. Airspace restrictions are checked and permission sought where needed.
  3. Before take-off, the wind, the weather and the launch spot are looked at.
  4. Close-up photos are taken of each slope, chimney, valley and gutter, with the drone always in view.
  5. We email the report with close-up photos and recommendations.

Before we arrive

  • If the roof is shared, arrange access with whoever manages the building

FAQs for Little Ilford

Is parking a problem for a survey in Little Ilford?

Usually it is manageable with a little notice. Let us know the parking rules on your street and we will work around them.

Are there drone restrictions around Little Ilford?

Normally it comes down to two things: the airspace at the address and the weather. The flight restriction zone around London City Airport comes within about 1 mile of Little Ilford. We check the exact boundary for the address before flying, and if the roof falls inside it, we ask for permission first. London’s airspace includes flight restriction zones around Heathrow, London City Airport and London Heliport, and restricted areas over Hyde Park, the City of London and the Isle of Dogs. Each address is checked against all of them before the drone goes up. The flight also waits for calm, dry weather.

Do you survey on Saturdays and Sundays?

Surveys can be booked for any day of the week: weekdays, Saturdays and Sundays. Tell us which days suit you when booking.

Do you climb onto every roof?

Only when it is safe. Most of what we need can be seen from safe viewpoints, the loft and, where applicable, a drone.

What will the report tell me?

It sets out what we found, why it matters and what we recommend, with photographs throughout. It also says if any part of the roof couldn’t be seen safely, so you know exactly what was covered.

How quickly is the report sent?

It depends on the package: the Basic Survey report arrives within 48 hours, the Standard Survey in 24 to 48 hours and the Premium Survey the same day. The report is emailed to you.

What’s the best way to book?

The quickest way is to phone 07833 053749 or send us an email. Let us know the address and a little about the roof, and we will take it from there. We survey on any day of the week.

What a survey costs

A few things affect what a survey costs:

  • Whether it’s a home or a commercial building
  • Extra roofs, like extensions, dormers or garages
  • The use of thermal imaging or a drone
  • Whether you choose the Basic, Standard or Premium Survey

The Premium Survey includes thermal imaging and drone inspection where it applies, which starts from £400, inc. VAT. We can help you choose the package that fits what you’d like to know.

What we need to know

We’ll usually ask about:

  • Your timetable, such as an exchange date
  • The style of property, from a terrace to a block
  • Any photos you have, taken from ground level or a window
  • Anything about access we should know

We confirm the price for your roof before booking, so you know the cost up front. Prices start from £400, including VAT. To book, ring 07833 053749 or send us an email.

Different roofs, different checks

Valleys and parapet gutters

Valleys and parapet gutters are hidden from the street. A drone shows linings, joints and build-ups of debris.

Steep slate and tile slopes

Old slates and clay tiles can crack underfoot. The drone sees them without touching them.

Tips that help

There is plenty you can do without going near the roof. Here’s what helps most:

  • Shut pets inside while we fly
  • Expect a little longer if permission is needed
  • Allow for a change of day in poor weather
  • Make sure the loft can be reached

There is a follow-up after 12 months with the Premium Survey. It helps you see how the roof has changed over the year, and whether work has done its job.

Keep the loft space ventilated. Condensation in the loft can damage timbers and insulation, and it is something only an inside check will show. Keep insulation clear of the eaves.

Why get it checked now?

It is hard to plan maintenance for a roof nobody has looked at. Our report shows the condition of each area, with recommendations prioritised by urgency where relevant. That helps you put the work in order. A hidden valley or parapet gutter on a London house can hold water for weeks before anyone notices. By the time a ceiling stains, the timbers underneath may have been wet for a while.

The cost of a survey depends on the roof: its size, its height, how many sections it has and how it can be reached and seen safely. Drone roof survey starts from £400, including VAT.
