Chaulden: your questions answered

Do you cover smaller places like Chaulden?

Yes, Chaulden is covered. We work right across London and South East England, from towns to the smallest villages. Longer journeys are simply planned ahead of time.

Can you fly a drone over a roof in Chaulden?

Usually it comes down to two things: the airspace at the address and the weather. Before any flight, we check the Drone Safety Map for airspace restrictions, including zones around airports and prisons. High wind or heavy rain also stops a small drone flying.

Do you survey roofs on blocks of flats?

Yes, if the freeholder or managing agent agrees access. On a shared roof we can only inspect the parts we’re allowed to reach, and the report makes that clear.

What does a roof survey cost?

Our price is from £400, including VAT. What you pay for your roof depends on its size, height, access and the package.

What insurance do you have?

We hold professional indemnity and public liability insurance.

Do you need to get into the loft?

Yes, where the survey calls for it and there is safe access. We look for staining, damp, daylight and signs of movement.

How fast do I get the report?

That depends on the survey you book: the Basic Survey report arrives within 48 hours, the Standard Survey in 24 to 48 hours and the Premium Survey the same day. The report is emailed to you.

Drone roof survey in Chaulden

Every flight starts with an airspace check. Flight restriction zones around airports such as Heathrow, Gatwick and London City need permission from the airport or air traffic control. Parts of central London have restricted areas too, where NATS permission is needed. If permission isn’t given, we inspect by other means and tell you. Prison sites also have drone restriction zones. We survey flat roofs on upper floors, large and complex roofs and tall and steep roofs, and the problems we are asked to look at most are chimney tops in poor condition and storm damage on steep or tall roofs.

Around Chaulden, lots of roofs are low enough to see partly from the garden or the street. Chimney tops, valleys and rear slopes are where close-up or thermal images help most. Both depend on the weather on the day. Even so, a close-up image frequently shows wear on ridges and flashings that a view from ground level misses.

What you get is a clear record of the roof on the day we saw it. That makes it useful now and a handy reference later, such as when you want to compare after future work.

What a drone roof survey does not cover

Our findings are based on what we can see safely on the day, so there are some things a survey can’t cover:

  • Structural calculations (that is a structural engineer’s job)
  • Neighbouring roofs the owner hasn’t asked us to survey
  • Anything inside the loft or under the coverings

If you’re not sure which survey you need, ring 07833 053749 or send us an email and we will give you a straight answer. The full list of what we check.

Drone roof surveys around Chaulden

Before any flight, we check the Drone Safety Map for airspace restrictions, including zones around airports and prisons. Our drone weighs under 250g, and we hold a CAA Flyer ID and Operator ID. Flights in the open category stay under 120 m (400 ft), with the drone kept in sight.

The streets around a church like St Stephen are often among the oldest in a place, and if yours is one of the older homes nearby, older roofs can be steep and hard to see from the street, which is where photos from the air and thermal images help.

Chaulden is about 2 miles west of Hemel Hempstead, in Hertfordshire. Whether the building in Chaulden is a house, a flat or a commercial unit, the roof can be surveyed on a weekday or at the weekend. Chaulden is one of the places in Hertfordshire we cover. There’s also a page for Milton Keynes.

For landlords and managing agents

Landlords, agents and building managers in Chaulden and across Hertfordshire can book any of our surveys. To discuss a property or a block, call 07833 053749 or send us an email.

We survey roofs for landlords and agents as well as homeowners. A report with photos gives you a clear record of the roof.

What you can safely check yourself

A lot can be seen from the ground. With binoculars, look for slipped or missing slates and tiles, gaps along the ridge and leaning chimneys. Please do not climb up for a closer look.

Your own check is a good start, but it is not a survey. From ground level, valleys, flashings and the backs of chimneys are often out of sight.

Tips that help

Getting the most from a drone roof survey starts before we arrive and carries on afterwards. Some tips:

  • Allow time for permission if you are in a flight restriction zone
  • Clear a spot on the drive or lawn
  • Allow for a change of day in poor weather
  • Share the postcode so we can check for restrictions

We email the report to you, with close-up photographs from the flight. Findings are set out in plain English, and recommendations are ranked by urgency where that helps.

Have high or hard-to-reach roofs surveyed every few years. Comparing surveys shows what is wearing, so small faults are dealt with early.

Do you need a drone roof survey in Chaulden?

Steep and tall roofs are hard to inspect safely. Tall townhouses, blocks of flats and offices are typical. We fly from ground level and bring the camera close to the roof.

We are often asked to look at:

  • Blocked valleys and parapet gutters
  • Cracked mortar along the ridge
  • Standing water on a flat roof
  • Cracked slates and tiles out of sight from below

If you look after a building such as Chaulden Junior School, a view from above covers a wide roof far faster than walking it.

  • What insurance they carry

What a good roof survey covers

How the survey works

Where it’s relevant and can be reached safely, the roof space is checked as well as the outside. In the loft, the signs we look for are staining, damp, daylight and sagging. The whole visit typically takes roughly 1–2 hours at a house, including the airspace and weather checks before take-off. A visit to Chaulden is planned like any other: the time, the access and where to park are agreed beforehand. Visits can be on weekdays, Saturdays or Sundays. Tell us about any garages, outbuildings or extensions you want included.

  1. You give us the address and let us know about the roof.
  2. Any flight restriction at the address is looked at, with permission requested if required.
  3. Before take-off, the wind, the weather and the launch spot are checked.
  4. We fly the sub-250g drone close to the roof and photograph each area.
  5. We email the report with close-up photos and recommendations.

Getting ready for the survey

  • Check we can get to the back of the property
  • Agree roof access with the managing agent if it is shared
  • Let us know about parking near the property
