Honest limits

Our findings are based on what we can see safely on the day, so there are some things a survey cannot cover:

  • A flight on a day when the weather isn’t safe
  • What’s under the slates, tiles or felt
  • Flying in a flight restriction zone without the airport’s permission

Not sure which survey suits your roof? You can ring 07833 053749 or use the contact form and we’ll tell you. What our survey covers.

What we look at

  • Tall and steep roofs
  • Fragile roofs
  • Valleys and parapet gutters
  • Chimney stacks
  • Large and complex roofs
  • Flat roofs on upper floors

Drone roof surveys for homes and businesses in Falmer

Drone surveys suit tall houses, blocks of flats, steep roofs and large commercial roofs. They’re useful where walking on the roof could damage it or is not safe. The roof is photographed without being disturbed. Ahead of the visit, we check the address for any airspace restrictions that apply. We’ll tell you if another approach would work better. If you’re worried about ridge pieces that have lifted and flat roofs on upper floors that hold water, a survey will tell you what’s going on, whatever the roof.

Somewhere as small as Falmer, older roofs are often steep and partly hidden by trees or outbuildings. Close-up drone photos and thermal images help show what can’t be reached safely. Both the forecast and the airspace are checked first. Older roofs with steep slopes and tall chimneys are where the extra view helps most.

The report works through the roof section by section, from the coverings down to the gutters, with a note and a photo for each point. You will see the good as well as the bad.

Tips that help

Some practical points come up on survey after survey. They apply to most roofs:

  • Let neighbours know about the flight if your roof is shared
  • Keep pets indoors during the flight
  • Make sure there is room outside for the drone to take off
  • Expect us to rearrange if it’s too windy or wet

You get an in-person consultation with the Premium Survey to talk through the photographs and findings. It’s a chance to ask about anything in the report.

Keep the loft space ventilated. Poor airflow lets condensation build up. Keep insulation clear of the eaves.

What we do, step by step

Time on site depends on the size and shape of the roof, but as a rough guide the survey takes about one to two hours at a house, including the airspace and weather checks before take-off. You are welcome to ask questions while we are there. For a village or hamlet like Falmer, the journey is planned in advance: let us know about lanes, gates and parking. On the day, we inspect whatever is safely visible, inside and out.

  1. First comes the address, plus a note of what worries you about the roof.
  2. We check the airspace and seek any permission needed.
  3. On the day, we check the wind, weather and site before flying.
  4. Close-up photos are taken of each slope, chimney, valley and gutter, with the drone always in view.
  5. You receive a written report with the photos and our recommendations.

Getting ready for the survey

  • If you’re buying, let the agent know when we’re coming
  • Leave side gates unlocked
  • If the roof is shared, arrange access with whoever manages the building

Falmer: your questions answered

Is my home in Falmer listed or in a conservation area?

Your council is the best source, with Historic England’s list for listed buildings. Both listing and conservation areas can limit changes of roofing material.

Do you cover smaller places like Falmer?

Yes. Falmer is within the area we cover, which takes in towns, villages and rural addresses. We survey roofs across London and the South East. Just mention lanes, gates or anything else about the route when booking.

Do you survey roofs on blocks of flats?

Yes, once whoever controls the roof agrees access. We check the parts we’re given access to.

Which days do you carry out surveys?

Visits run seven days a week in the daytime, which suits people who work during the week. Just say which days work for you.

Are you insured?

Our surveys are covered by professional indemnity and public liability insurance. If you need details for a managing agent or a building owner, just ask.

What do I do with the report?

We email you the written report with photographs and recommendations. It’s yours to share with a seller, insurer, roofer or managing agent, whichever applies.

Can you fly a drone near an airport?

That depends on where the roof is. Flying inside a flight restriction zone needs permission from the airport or air traffic control. Allow a little extra time if your home is close to an airport.

What a drone roof survey looks like in Falmer

Falmer lies within about 4 miles of the sea, where wind off the sea can be strong. The weather on the day decides whether a flight goes ahead, as a small drone cannot fly safely in high wind or heavy rain. Historic houses like Preston Manor & Gardens, about 3.5 miles south-west, show how far back building in the area around Falmer goes. On older houses around here, roofs often carry the marks of earlier repairs, from replaced slates to new lead.

If you look after a building such as Brighton Aldridge Community Academy, big roofs are where photos from the air and thermal images show the most at once. If you live in an older home near The Parish Church of St Lawrence, thin or patchy insulation under an old roof often shows up clearly on a thermal image.

Falmer is about 3 miles north-east of Brighton, in Brighton and Hove. Falmer gets the same service as everywhere else we work: a careful look at what can be seen safely, photographs and a clear written report. We cover towns and villages across Brighton and Hove, large and small.

How the survey changes by roof type

Chimney stacks

The drone shows the outside of the stack, and it is not a flue or gas safety check. We will say if a specialist is needed.

Steep slate and tile slopes

Walking on fragile coverings can break them. A drone avoids that.

Landlord and commercial surveys in Falmer

Roof problems in a rented home affect tenants as well as the building. A survey helps you spot issues early and plan the work around your tenants.

For blocks of flats, a roof survey helps managing agents and residents’ management companies plan ahead. Recommendations are set out in order of urgency where relevant, which helps when budgeting.

What happens if roof problems are left?

A drone survey disturbs nothing on the roof. Nothing is cracked or dislodged by footsteps, so you see the roof exactly as it is. Around Falmer, older homes often have old roof timbers, where water from a failed roof can cause rot if it’s left.

The cost of a survey depends on the roof: its size, its height, how many sections it has and how it can be reached and seen safely. Our price is from £400, including VAT.
