Drone roof survey in Margery: what you get
They suit tall buildings, steep or large roofs and roofs that are hard to see from ground level. They’re useful where walking on the roof could damage it or is not safe, such as old slate, clay tiles or cement sheets. The roof is photographed without being disturbed. Ahead of the visit, we check the address for any airspace restrictions that apply. We’ll tell you if another approach would work better. We are often asked to look into vegetation in valleys and gutters and blistered or cracked flat roof coverings, on tall and steep roofs, flat roofs on upper floors and chimney stacks.
Older buildings in small places like Margery may be listed or in a conservation area. Neither a drone survey nor a thermal survey involves any work on the roof, which suits a building where any change needs care, before anyone decides what work it needs. Check with the council before planning any work on a listed building or one in a conservation area.
The report is yours to share with whoever needs it: a seller or estate agent, an insurer, a roofer, a builder or a managing agent, whichever applies.

The survey, step by step
Every roof is different; as a rough guide, the survey takes roughly 1–2 hours for most homes, with the pre-flight checks included, and longer for big commercial roofs. You’re welcome to ask questions while we’re there. Somewhere as small as Margery, access is often the only tricky part. Mention any outbuildings, barns or garages you want included, and anything about the roof you already know. Visits can be on weekdays, Saturdays or Sundays.
- First comes the address, plus a note of what worries you about the roof.
- Any flight restriction at the address is checked, with permission requested if required.
- Before take-off, the wind, the weather and the launch spot are looked at.
- Close-up photos are taken of each slope, chimney, valley and gutter, with the drone always in view.
- You receive a written report with the photos and our recommendations.
How to prepare
- Dig out any old roof reports or invoices
- Check pets are kept safely away

How the survey changes by roof type
Chimney stacks
Leaning stacks and loose pots are easier to judge from above. We record what we find with photos.
Steep slate and tile slopes
On slate roofs, slipped slates often point to corroded nails. Close-up photos show how widespread it is.
What a drone roof survey looks like in Margery
Handmade clay tiles and tile-hung walls are typical of Surrey’s older houses. Horsham stone slab roofs survive on some old buildings in Surrey. A drone or thermal camera adds most on the steep, tall and hidden parts of roofs like these. Before any flight, we check the Drone Safety Map for airspace restrictions, including zones around airports and prisons.
Take a building like Kingswood Primary School: a drone or thermal camera can show a large roof in a single visit. The streets around a church such as Church of Jesus Christ and the Wisdom of God are frequently among the oldest in a place, and if your house is among the older ones nearby, older roofs can be steep and hard to see from the street, which is where aerial photos and thermal images help. If you run a business near The Belfry, thermal images can show trapped moisture across a wide commercial roof.

What you can safely check yourself
Watch the gutters in a downpour, from a window or the ground. Water spilling over the edge can be a sign of a blockage or a gutter that has dropped.
Look up at the roof after a storm, from ground level: pieces of tile or slate on the ground, a gap in the ridge or a lifted flashing are all worth noting. Don’t go up yourself.
Landlord and commercial surveys in Margery
For blocks of flats, a roof survey helps managing agents and residents’ management companies plan ahead. Recommendations are set out in order of urgency where relevant.
For a freeholder or residents’ company, a roof report is a sound basis for a maintenance plan.
Your questions about drone roof surveys in Margery
Are there drone restrictions around Margery?
That depends on where the roof is and on the weather. Before any flight, we check the Drone Safety Map for airspace restrictions. Strong wind or heavy rain also stops a small drone flying.
Will you come out to Margery?
Yes. Margery is within the area we cover, which takes in towns, villages and rural addresses. We work right across London and the South East. Just mention lanes, gates or anything else about the route when booking.
Will I get photos?
Yes. Photos are taken throughout the survey, and they go into the written report.
When does the report arrive?
That depends on the survey you book: the Basic Survey report arrives within 48 hours, the Standard Survey in 24 to 48 hours and the Premium Survey the same day. Reports are sent by email.
Will you walk on the roof?
Not always. Some roofs are too steep or fragile to walk on safely. Safe viewpoints, the loft and a drone where applicable let us see the rest, and the report records anything we couldn’t see.
Can you survey in bad weather?
Light rain is typically fine; heavy rain and wind are different. In strong wind or a downpour, a drone can’t fly and access may not be safe, so we’d move the date with you.
Do you need to get into the loft?
Yes, where the survey calls for it and there’s safe access. Inside, we look for damp, staining, gaps and sagging, as far as the space allows.
What a drone roof survey does not cover
Every survey has limits, and it’s better to know them up front. Keep these in mind:
- What’s under the slates, tiles or felt
- Flights in strong wind or a downpour
- Neighbouring roofs the owner hasn’t asked us to survey
If you are not sure which survey you need, phone 07833 053749 or use the contact form and we will give you a straight answer before you book. What a survey covers and does not.
What we look at
- Fragile roofs
- Tall and steep roofs
- Chimney stacks
- Large and complex roofs
- Valleys and parapet gutters
- Flat roofs on upper floors
Why it is worth a survey now in Margery
Leaving a high roof unchecked means relying on what you can see from below. Close-up photos show what’s really there, slope by slope. Seeing the problem makes it easier to decide what to do. Outbuildings and barns around Margery are easy to forget, but a failed roof there can spoil what’s stored inside. A quick look before winter can save a lot.
The Premium Survey includes thermal imaging and drone inspection where it applies, from £400 with VAT included. We can help you choose the package that fits what you’d like to know.
