Drone roof survey in South Park
Drones need reasonable weather. Strong wind or heavy rain rules out a flight, because the drone has to stay safely under control. If the day turns out unsuitable, we’ll talk about another date. We check the forecast before the visit and again on site. Light wind and dry weather give the clearest close-up photos. Waiting for a better day is better than a rushed flight. Common reasons to book are moss building up on slopes and in gutters and storm damage on steep or tall roofs, across chimney stacks, large and complex roofs and fragile roofs.
In smaller places like South Park, many homes are bungalows and houses with roofs you can partly see from ground level. Chimney tops, valleys and rear slopes are where close-up or thermal images help most. The forecast decides the day, as calm, dry conditions suit both. Even so, a close-up image often shows wear on ridges and flashings that a view from ground level misses.
The written findings come by email, ready to forward to whoever needs them. Turnaround is within 48 hours for Basic, 24–48 hours for Standard and same day for Premium.

What we are asked to look at in South Park
Parapet gutters, box gutters and central valleys sit out of sight. Leaves, silt and plant growth build up unseen, until water overflows inside. From above, they’re easy to see.
Typical things we’re asked to look at include:
- Vegetation in valleys and gutters
- Standing water on a flat roof
- Blocked valleys and parapet gutters
- Cracked mortar along the ridge
If you run a business near The Belfry, a commercial roof can be photographed from above without anyone walking on it.
Questions to ask before you book
- Will the report include photos?
- If they fly a drone, whether they hold a CAA Flyer ID and Operator ID
- Whether VAT is in the quoted price
- Whether the inside of the roof is included
What we do, step by step
Before we start, tell us why you’ve booked: buying, a leak, storm damage, new work or just wanting to know where things stand. That way we can focus on what matters to you. The visit typically takes between one and two hours for most homes, with the pre-flight checks included, and longer for big commercial roofs. With a bit of garden around a house, as there often is around South Park, the roof can be viewed from several angles. Let us know if any side is fenced off or hard to reach. Inside, the loft is checked where it can be reached safely.
- We start with the address and what you’d like checked.
- Any flight restriction at the address is looked at, with permission requested if required.
- We assess the conditions and the take-off spot first.
- Close-up photos are taken of each slope, chimney, valley and gutter, with the drone always in view.
- We email the report with close-up photos and recommendations.
Getting ready for the survey
- Have any paperwork from past roof work to hand
- Make sure the loft hatch can be reached
- Leave side gates unlocked

How the survey changes by roof type
Ridges and hips
Some ridges are fixed with mortar, others with dry-fix systems. Their condition is noted in the report.
Flat roofs on tall buildings
The flat roof on top of a block is rarely looked at. A drone shows ponding, splits, blisters and worn upstands.

Practical tips
Getting the most from a drone roof survey starts before we arrive and carries on afterwards. Tips:
- Make sure there’s room outside for the drone to take off
- Expect a little longer if permission is needed
- Let neighbours know about the flight if your roof is shared
- Clear the loft hatch so we can check inside too
The Premium Survey report comes the same day. Drone photos are included where we could fly.
Do not block the vents at the eaves. Poor airflow lets condensation build up, and it is something only an inside check will show. Keep insulation clear of the eaves.
What we cannot see
We only report what can safely be seen on the day, so some things are outside what a survey can do:
- Neighbouring roofs the owner hasn’t asked us to survey
- Structural calculations (that is a structural engineer’s job)
- Flights in a restricted zone without permission
If you are not sure which survey you need, call 07833 053749 or email us and we will give you a straight answer. The full list of what we check.
What this survey covers
- Valleys and parapet gutters
- Tall and steep roofs
- Chimney stacks
- Large and complex roofs
- Flat roofs on upper floors
- Fragile roofs
Can I check my roof myself?
Inside, the loft is a good place to look, with care. Take a torch and only step on boards or joists, checking for stains, damp wood or chinks of daylight.
The one thing to avoid is getting up close. Slates, tiles, flat roofs and rooflights can give way, and falls from height are serious. That is where a survey comes in, using safe viewpoints and a drone where it applies.
FAQs for South Park
Are there drone restrictions around South Park?
It depends on the exact address and the weather on the day. South Park is about 1 mile from the edge of the flight restriction zone around Redhill Aerodrome. The exact boundary is checked for each address before any flight, and a roof inside it needs permission before we fly. Strong wind or heavy rain also stops a small drone flying.
How do I find out if my home in South Park is listed?
Start with Historic England’s list for listing and your council for conservation areas. It is worth checking before planning roof work, as both can affect what’s allowed.
When does the report arrive?
Report times are set by the package. Basic: within 48 hours. Standard: 24 to 48 hours. Premium: the same day. If you have a deadline, like an exchange date, tell us when you book.
Does the report include photos?
Yes. The report includes photographs of what we found, so you can see each point for yourself.
Is South Park in your area?
Yes. Our area covers London and South East England, South Park included.
Will you check the loft?
If it is needed and safe to reach, yes. Inside, we look for damp, staining, gaps and sagging, as far as the space allows.
Can you survey a shared roof?
Yes. A shared roof needs access agreed first, with whoever owns or manages the building. Let us know about it as you book and we’ll explain what’s needed.
Airspace, weather and South Park roofs
The flight restriction zone around Redhill Aerodrome comes within about 1 mile of South Park. We check the exact boundary for the address before flying, and if the roof falls inside it, we ask for permission first. What can be done to an older roof may depend on listing or a conservation area. The council is the place to check, along with Historic England’s list.
Take an older house close to St Luke's: thin or patchy insulation under an old roof often shows up clearly on a thermal image. Anyone responsible for a site like Sandcross Primary School will know that big roofs are where photos from the air and thermal images show the most at once.
