Every flight starts with an airspace check. Flight restriction zones around airports such as Heathrow, Gatwick and London City need permission from the airport or air traffic control. Central London has restricted areas of its own, which need NATS permission. If permission isn’t given, we inspect by other means and tell you. Prisons have their own drone restriction zones too. If you are worried about tired mortar and pots at the top of a stack and blistered or cracked flat roof coverings, a survey will tell you what’s going on, on chimney stacks, fragile roofs and flat roofs on upper floors alike.

Villages like Sidlow often stand in open country, where wind can be strong. A small drone can’t fly safely in high wind or heavy rain, and thermal imaging works best with little wind. The visit is planned around the forecast, along with the journey and access. A change in the forecast can mean moving the visit to another day.

Where we can’t see part of the roof, the report says so. That way, it’s clear what was covered and what wasn’t.

Sidlow questions

Is my home in Sidlow listed or in a conservation area?

Check Historic England’s online list first, then ask the council about conservation areas and any Article 4 direction. It matters most if you’re planning to re-roof in a different material.

Is Sidlow within the area you cover?

Yes. Sidlow is within the area we cover, which takes in towns, villages and rural addresses. We cover the whole of London and South East England. Just mention lanes, gates or anything else about the route when booking.

How quickly is the report sent?

Basic reports arrive within 48 hours, Standard reports in 24–48 hours and Premium reports on the same day. Each one is emailed.

Can you tell me if my roof has asbestos?

No. Asbestos surveys and sampling aren’t something we do. Where a material might contain it, like old cement sheets on a building from before 2000, the report flags it.

Can a drone see inside my loft?

No. It shows what’s on the outside. Leaks, damp timbers and condensation often show first from inside, so we check the loft too where we can.

Do drone rules differ in central London?

Parts of central London are restricted, including areas over Hyde Park, the City of London and the Isle of Dogs, and flights there need NATS permission. We check before every flight and seek permission where needed.

Do I need to be at home?

Someone needs to let us in if we’re looking inside or in the loft. We’ll talk about access when you book.

Flying and imaging in Sidlow

Sidlow is inside, or right on the edge of, the flight restriction zone around Redhill Aerodrome. Before any flight there, we ask the aerodrome for permission, and the flight only goes ahead if it’s given. Listing and conservation areas can both shape what roof work is allowed on an older home. The council is the place to check, along with Historic England’s list, before anyone quotes for re-roofing.

Anyone responsible for a site like Dovers Green School will know that thermal images can show where wet insulation sits under a big flat roof. If you look after a shop, office or commercial unit, for example near The Belfry, a commercial roof can be photographed from above without anyone walking on it.

For landlords and managing agents

If you own several properties, you can book surveys for several addresses. To discuss a number of properties, phone 07833 053749 or email us with the addresses.

Landlords and agents in Sidlow book surveys as well as homeowners. The report gives you a dated record of the roof, with photographs.

Common roof problems in Sidlow

Height and steep pitches make close inspection risky. Tall townhouses, blocks of flats and offices are typical. We fly from the ground and bring the camera close to the roof.

Things that often lead to a survey include:

  • Cracked mortar along the ridge
  • Slates or tiles shifted by high winds
  • Moss and weeds taking hold up top
  • Slipped or missing slates on a high roof

If you own one of the older houses in the streets near Emmanuel Church, older roofs can be steep and hard to see from the street, which is where photos from the air and thermal images help.

Choosing a roof surveyor

  • Whether the price includes VAT
  • Whether the inside of the roof is included

What to expect from a roof survey

DIY checks: what’s safe

You can learn a lot from the ground. With binoculars, look for slipped or missing slates and tiles, gaps along the ridge and leaning chimneys. Please do not climb up for a closer look.

After heavy rain, check ceilings and the tops of walls for new stains. Take a photo and write down when you saw it, as it helps a surveyor trace the cause.

Tips from our surveys

These tips come from what we see on roofs every week, before and after a survey:

  • Keep a clear space in the garden or drive for take-off
  • Keep dogs indoors during the visit
  • Tell next door if the drone will be near their property
  • Move stored items away from the hatch

The Premium Survey report comes the same day. It includes the drone photos where a flight was possible, alongside the other checks in the package.

Plan a drone survey every few years for tall or large roofs. Comparing surveys shows what is wearing, so small faults are dealt with early.

The survey, step by step

Once we’ve finished looking, we write up our findings in a report with photos. As for time on site, it typically takes about one to two hours at a house, including the airspace and weather checks before take-off. Older roofs in small places like Sidlow can have low, tight loft spaces, so tell us about the loft hatch and any ladder. We only go where it’s safe.

  1. We confirm whether a drone suits your roof.
  2. A visit is booked for a weekday, Saturday or Sunday, weather permitting.
  3. The roof is photographed from the air, with the camera kept on your property.
  4. If the loft can be reached safely, it’s checked too.
  5. The report sets out what we found, with photos and recommendations.

How to prepare

  • Unlock side gates and any roof access doors
  • If the roof is shared, arrange access with whoever manages the building
  • Move anything stored under the loft hatch

Advice

How we price drone roof surveys

Prices always include VAT. The things that change the price are:

  • How big the roof is
  • The use of thermal imaging or a drone
  • Features like valleys, chimneys, dormers and parapets
  • Extra roofs, like extensions, dormers or garages

Bigger, taller and commercial roofs take more time to survey, so they’re priced to match. You’ll know the figure before booking.

What we need to know

When you call or email, these details help:

  • Dates you are working to, such as exchange
  • Any stains, drips or damp patches you’ve seen indoors
  • Where the property is, with the postcode
  • Anything about access we should know

Booking is simple: just ring 07833 053749 or send us an email and give us some details about the property and we’ll explain which survey suits. We confirm the price before anything is booked.
