Signs you need a drone roof survey in Mortimer

Height and steep pitches make close inspection risky. Tall townhouses, blocks of flats and offices are typical. A drone gets close-up views from a safe position on the ground.

Most people get in touch after spotting one of these:

  • Ridge pieces that have lifted
  • Coverings that have slipped high up on the roof
  • Chimney tops in poor condition
  • Blocked valleys and parapet gutters

Take an older house close to Mortimer Methodist Church: older roofs can be steep and hard to see from the street, which is where aerial photos and thermal images help.

Questions to ask before booking

  • How they plan to inspect the roof safely
  • Whether any drone flown is registered with the CAA
  • Whether the inside of the roof is included
  • Their track record with similar roofs

What to expect from a roof survey

Drone roof survey in Mortimer: what you get

Drone surveys suit tall houses, blocks of flats, steep roofs and large commercial roofs. They also suit fragile roofs that nobody should walk on, like old slate, clay tiles or cement sheets. You get close-up views without anyone setting foot on the roof. Ahead of the visit, we check the address for any airspace restrictions that apply. If a drone is not the right tool, we will say so. If you’ve noticed worn lead at chimneys and walls and chimney tops in poor condition, a survey will tell you what’s going on, whatever the roof.

Places like Mortimer can be near small airfields or other airspace restrictions, so the Drone Safety Map is checked before any flight. Exposed sites can be windy, and a small drone can’t fly safely in strong wind, while thermal imaging also works best with little wind. Each flight is planned with neighbours’ privacy in mind, as well as the airspace and the wind.

The report records the roof as we found it on the day. It’s useful right away, and a good reference for later, such as when you want to compare after future work.

Why it is worth a survey now in Mortimer

Faults on high roofs tend to be found late. By that stage the damage has spread inside. A drone survey finds them sooner. Blocked gutters on homes around Mortimer overflow and soak walls. Dealing with the cause is simple; drying out a wall is not.

A Basic Survey starts from £150, inc. VAT. The Standard Survey starts from £250 and the Premium Survey from £400, both including VAT. We confirm the price for your roof before you book.

What we do, step by step

The aim of the visit is simple: to look at the roof as closely as is safe and record what we find. Notes and photos go into the written report. It normally takes between one and two hours for most houses, with bigger or more complicated roofs taking longer. A visit to Mortimer is planned like any other: the time, the access and where to park are agreed ahead of time. Visits can be on weekdays, Saturdays or Sundays. If there are outbuildings or garages you want looked at, mention them.

  1. We start by checking the airspace and any restrictions at your address.
  2. If permission is needed, we ask for it before the visit.
  3. Before the flight, we check the conditions and the take-off spot.
  4. We fly the drone close to the roof to photograph it in detail, always in sight.
  5. We email a written report with the photographs and our recommendations.

Advice

Rented homes, blocks and businesses

For blocks of flats, a roof survey helps managing agents and residents’ management companies plan ahead. Recommendations are set out by urgency where it matters, which helps when budgeting.

Roof problems in a rented home affect tenants as well as the building. A survey helps you spot issues early and plan the work with less disruption.

Common questions in Mortimer

How do I find out if my home in Mortimer is listed?

Historic England’s list shows listed buildings, and the local council can tell you about conservation areas. If a home is listed, changes that affect its special interest need listed building consent, and in a conservation area re-roofing in different materials may need permission.

Will you come out to Mortimer?

Yes, Mortimer is covered. Our area covers London and the South East, and smaller places are part of that. Longer journeys are simply planned in advance.

Do I need to be at home?

Someone needs to let us in if we’re looking inside or in the loft. We’ll talk about access when booking.

What do I do with the report?

You receive the written report by email, with photographs and recommendations. You can use it to talk to a seller, an insurer, a roofer or a managing agent, whichever applies.

How do I book a survey in Mortimer?

The quickest way is to ring 07833 053749 or drop us an email. Let us know the address and a little about the roof, and we’ll suggest the right survey. We survey on weekdays, Saturdays and Sundays.

Do you take photos of the roof?

Yes. Photos are part of every report.

Is it a structural engineer’s report?

No. Our survey is not a structural engineer’s report, and it doesn’t include calculations. If we see signs that need an engineer’s opinion, we’ll recommend one.

Drones, thermal imaging and Mortimer roofs

Our drone weighs under 250g, and we hold a CAA Flyer ID and Operator ID. Open category rules keep flights below 120 m (400 ft) and the drone within sight at all times. Stratfield Saye House, about 3.6 miles south-east, is one of the historic houses in the wider area around Mortimer. On older houses around here, roofs frequently carry the marks of earlier repairs, from replaced slates to new lead.

If you look after a building such as Mortimer St John's C.E. Infant School, big roofs are where aerial photos and thermal images show the most at once.
