Common questions in Oxshott

Can you fly a drone over a roof in Oxshott?

That depends on where the roof is and on the weather. Before any flight, we check the Drone Safety Map for airspace restrictions, including zones around airports and prisons. Strong wind or heavy rain also stops a small drone flying.

Do you cover smaller places like Oxshott?

Yes. Oxshott is within the area we cover, which takes in towns, villages and rural addresses. We work right across London and South East England. Just mention lanes, gates or anything else about the route when booking.

How do I arrange a drone roof survey in Oxshott?

To book, call 07833 053749 or drop us an email and tell us the address and what you’d like to know. We’ll confirm the price and find a day that suits.

Do you test for asbestos?

No. Asbestos surveys and sampling are not something we do. Where a material might contain it, such as old cement sheets on a building from before 2000, the report flags it.

Does the report include photos?

Yes, plenty. Each finding is shown in a picture where possible, so you can see what we mean.

Do you climb onto every roof?

Only when it is safe. Safe viewpoints, the roof space and a drone where applicable cover most of what’s needed, and the report notes anything we couldn’t see.

Does this replace a RICS home survey?

No. Our survey is a roof survey, not a RICS Level 2 or Level 3 survey of the whole building. It focuses on the roof and can sit alongside a RICS survey.

About our drone roof survey in Oxshott

Tall, steep, large or fragile roofs cannot always be inspected up close. A drone takes close-up photos of those roofs from the air. It shows coverings, ridges, chimneys, valleys and gutters clearly, including slopes that can’t be seen from the street. Everything we find goes into a report with photographs. It also suits roofs that would be damaged by someone walking on them. Where a flight is not possible, we explain why. We survey valleys and parapet gutters, flat roofs on upper floors and chimney stacks, and the problems we are asked to look at most are plant growth and moss on the roof and gaps where slates or tiles have gone.

In smaller places like Oxshott, many homes are bungalows and houses with roofs you can partly see from ground level. Chimney tops, valleys and rear slopes are where close-up or thermal images help most. Both depend on the weather on the day. Close-up images often show wear on ridges, verges and flashings that can’t be judged properly from ground level.

Where we can’t see part of the roof, the report says so. That way, it is clear what was covered and what wasn’t, and what we’d suggest next.

How the survey changes by roof type

Valleys and parapet gutters

A butterfly roof drains to a central valley gutter. It is almost impossible to see from the ground, but it is plain to see from the air.

Ridges and hips

Some ridges are fixed with mortar, others with dry-fix systems. Their condition is noted in the report.

Practical tips

Here are a few things we’d tell any owner:

  • Let us know what you want to see
  • Tell next door if the drone will be near their property
  • Shut pets inside while we fly
  • Expect us to rearrange if it’s too windy or wet

The report gives any roofer you ask to quote a clear brief. The photos show the location and extent of every problem, so their quotes cover the same ground.

Check the loft now and then, with care and a good torch. The underside frequently shows problems before the outside does. Photograph anything new.

Flying and imaging in Oxshott

The wider area around Oxshott has a long history of building, with The Homewood about 1.8 miles north-west. If your house is among the older ones, expect a mix of original materials and later repairs on the roof, and a listed home or one in a conservation area may need consent for changes of material. In Surrey, older roofs are frequently handmade clay tile, with tile-hanging on many upper walls. Horsham stone slab roofs survive on some old buildings in Surrey. Many roofs like these cannot be judged properly from the pavement, and that’s where a view from above or a thermal image earns its place.

For site and facilities teams at buildings like The Royal Kent CofE Primary School, thermal images can show where wet insulation sits under a big flat roof. The streets around a church such as St Andrew's Church are often among the oldest in a place, and if yours is one of the older homes nearby, thin or patchy insulation under an old roof frequently shows up clearly on a thermal image. Shop and office owners around The Ashley Centre may find that big, flat commercial roofs are where aerial photos and thermal images help most.

Why get it checked now?

Small defects on a high roof grow with each storm. Finding them now means less to put right. Blocked gutters on homes around Oxshott overflow and soak walls. Dealing with the cause is simple; drying out a wall is not.

DIY checks: what’s safe

Watch the gutters in a downpour, from a window or the ground. Water spilling over the edge can be a sign of a blockage or a gutter that has dropped.

Inside, the loft is a good place to look, with care. Use a torch and stay on the joists or boards, checking for stains, damp wood or chinks of daylight.

When you need someone else

No survey can tell you everything, and it’s better to know them up front. Bear these in mind:

  • A structural engineer’s report
  • Anything inside the loft or under the coverings
  • Roofs and gardens beyond the one we’re surveying

If in doubt, phone 07833 053749 or drop us an email and we’ll point you to the right survey. What a survey covers and does not.

What we look at

  • Tall and steep roofs
  • Large and complex roofs
  • Valleys and parapet gutters
  • Flat roofs on upper floors
  • Fragile roofs
  • Chimney stacks

What we do, step by step

We work from the outside in: first the slopes, edges and gutters from every safe viewpoint, then the loft space where it can be reached. In total, it takes roughly 1–2 hours at a house, including the airspace and weather checks before take-off. Homes around Oxshott often have gardens on more than one side, which gives us room to step back and see the roof. Let us know if any side is fenced off or hard to reach. The loft, where there is safe access, completes the picture.

  1. We start with the address and what you’d like checked.
  2. We check the airspace and seek any permission needed.
  3. On the day, we check the wind, weather and site before flying.
  4. Close-up photos are taken of each slope, chimney, valley and gutter, with the drone always in view.
  5. You receive a written report with the photos and our recommendations.

Getting ready for the survey

  • Mention any parking restrictions on your street
  • If you’re buying, let the agent know when we’re coming
  • Dig out any old roof reports or invoices
