Drones, thermal imaging and Poverest roofs

We fly a sub-250g drone and are a CAA-registered drone operator (Flyer ID and Operator ID). In the open category, flights stay below 120 m (400 ft) and within sight. Further from the centre, London’s housing takes in interwar semis with hipped roofs in clay or concrete tiles as well as slate-roofed terraces. If your home in Poverest is one of them, bay roofs, hips and later dormers each have their own details. Steep or complicated roofs are often hard to see from the ground, which is where close-up aerial shots and thermal images help.

If you look after a building such as Poverest Primary School, a view from above covers a wide roof far faster than walking it. The streets around a church like St Andrew's are frequently among the oldest in a place, and if your home is one of the older ones nearby, thin or patchy insulation under an old roof frequently shows up clearly on a thermal image.

How a drone roof survey works in Poverest

We fly a sub-250g drone, and we’re a CAA-registered drone operator, with a Flyer ID and an Operator ID. It stays within sight for the whole flight, and within the 120-metre limit that applies to all drones in the open category. Every flight is planned around the roof, the site and the people nearby. Before every flight, we check the airspace and the weather. Safety comes first on every visit. We’re frequently asked to look into cracked flaunching or loose chimney pots and lifted or split lead flashings, on valleys and parapet gutters, large and complex roofs and flat roofs on upper floors.

London roofs sit shoulder to shoulder in terraces and blocks, so privacy and neighbours matter as much as the view. We take care to focus on the roof we’ve been asked to look at, in Poverest as anywhere. Let us know about the building and access when booking. The extra view helps most on steep slopes, tall stacks and rear additions.

After the visit, you get a photo-illustrated written report, sent by email. It explains the condition of the roof, the defects we found and what we recommend.

Why get it checked now?

Planning roof work without seeing the roof is a gamble. You get photos of every part we can see. That helps you put the work in order. Work on a London roof is rarely simple to arrange, with parking, neighbours and access all to think about. That is a good reason to find problems early, while there is time to plan.

Prices start from £400, including VAT. Packages run from Basic at £150 through Standard at £250 to Premium at £400, inc. VAT, and we’ll tell you which fits.

What you get with us

  • Covered by professional indemnity and public liability insurance
  • Package prices that include VAT

The survey, step by step

The visit normally starts outside and finishes in the loft: outside views come first, then the loft space if there is safe access. All told, expect an hour or two at most homes, with bigger or more complicated roofs taking longer. Many London properties are flats or terraces with no side access, so the back of the roof is often seen from upstairs windows, from inside or, where a flight is allowed, from the air. If the building has a managing agent or access rules, let us know when you book.

  1. You give us the address so we can check the airspace.
  2. If permission is needed, we ask for it before the visit.
  3. We assess the wind, the weather and the surroundings before take-off.
  4. The sub-250g drone takes close-up photos of the roof, kept in sight throughout.
  5. You receive a written report with photos and recommendations.

Preparing for the visit

  • Check the loft hatch can be reached
  • Find any records of previous roof work
  • Point out any leaks or damp patches

DIY checks: what’s safe

Inside, the loft is a good place to look, with care. Use a torch and stay on the joists or boards, checking for stains, damp wood or chinks of daylight.

Fresh stains on ceilings or walls after rain are worth noting. Photograph them and note the date, which helps when we look at the roof.

Common questions in Poverest

Can parking be tricky for a visit in Poverest?

It depends on the street. If Poverest has controlled parking where you are, a visitor permit is the easiest answer, and a driveway is even better.

How do I find out if my home in Poverest is listed?

You can check whether a building is listed on Historic England’s list, and your council can tell you if it is in a conservation area. If a home is listed, changes that affect its special interest need listed building consent, and in a conservation area re-roofing in different materials may need permission.

Do you carry professional indemnity insurance?

Every survey is covered by professional indemnity and public liability insurance, and we can provide details if a managing agent needs them.

Do I have to be there for the survey?

If the survey includes the loft or the inside of the building, someone needs to let us in. We will talk about access when you book.

What do I do with the report?

You will get the report by email. The Standard Survey includes a follow-up consultation, and the Premium Survey an in-person consultation, so you can talk the findings through.

What happens if the weather is bad?

Bad weather means no flight. Wind and heavy rain are the two things that ground a small drone, so we’d move the date with you, or look from other safe viewpoints if you’d rather.

Can you give me structural calculations?

No. We are experienced roof surveyors, and visible signs like sagging are noted, but calculations and an engineer’s opinion are outside what we do. The report will say if you need an engineer.

What we look for on each type of roof

Flat roofs on tall buildings

Flat roofs on tall buildings are often seen by nobody. A drone shows ponding, splits, blisters and worn upstands.

Chimney stacks

The drone shows the outside of the stack, not a flue, gas or sweep inspection. If the flue needs a specialist, we will tell you.

Do you need a drone roof survey in Poverest?

Strong winds can lift slates, tiles and ridge pieces. Damage on a high or steep roof is hard to judge from the garden. A drone shows what has slipped, lifted or gone.

Common reasons to book include:

  • Storm damage on steep or tall roofs
  • Cracked mortar along the ridge
  • Debris building up in hidden gutters
  • Cracked slates and tiles out of sight from below

As a London address, Poverest can be tricky for parking: tell us about permits, visitor bays or off-street space when booking, as a space near the door can’t be promised.

What to check before booking

  • Whether they hold professional indemnity and public liability insurance
  • Their track record with similar roofs
  • Which limits apply to the survey
  • When you’ll get the report

What a roof survey includes

Before and after the survey

Nothing here needs a ladder. A few suggestions:

  • Tell us the exact address when you book
  • Clear the loft hatch so we can check inside too
  • Keep dogs indoors during the visit
  • Keep a clear space in the garden or drive for take-off

The Premium Survey report comes the same day. Drone photographs are included where we could fly, alongside the other checks in the package.

Keep gutters, valleys and outlets clear, ideally once the leaves have fallen. On high roofs, leave clearing to a professional. Blocked hidden gutters cause many leaks.
