What we do, step by step

Expect us to ask a few questions before we start, about the roof’s history, any leaks and past repairs. The inspection then takes between one and two hours for most houses, rising to roughly 3–4 hours on a commercial building. Older rural homes like those around Sheerwater can have a main roof, lower lean-to roofs and outbuildings all joined together. We work round each section in turn, from the safest viewpoints.

  1. We start with the address and what you’d like checked.
  2. Any flight restriction at the address is checked, with permission requested if required.
  3. We assess the conditions and the take-off spot first.
  4. The drone photographs the roof closely, kept in sight throughout.
  5. The findings, photos and recommendations reach you by email.

Before the survey

  • Find any records of previous roof work
  • Clear the way to the loft hatch
  • Keep pets in another room

Drone roof survey in Sheerwater: what you get

Some roofs are hard or unsafe to reach. A drone takes close-up photographs of those roofs from the air. You see slates, ridges, chimneys, valleys and gutters in detail. Everything we find goes into a written report with photos. It also suits roofs that would be damaged by someone walking on them. If we can’t fly, we tell you why. Common reasons to book are moss and weeds taking hold up top and ridge pieces that have lifted, on flat roofs on upper floors, chimney stacks and large and complex roofs.

In a small place like Sheerwater, open ground can mean strong wind. High wind or heavy rain stops a small drone flying, and calm conditions also suit thermal imaging best. The visit is planned around the forecast, along with the journey and access. If the day turns windy or wet, the visit can be moved.

Most points in the report come with a picture, because a photo of a cracked flashing says more than a paragraph. If something couldn’t be seen safely, the report is clear about it.

Before and after the survey

Getting the most from a drone roof survey starts before we arrive and carries on afterwards. Some tips:

  • A word with neighbours beforehand helps
  • Shut pets inside while we fly
  • Clear the loft hatch so we can check inside too
  • Book early if you are near an airport

File the report and photos with your home documents. They give you something to compare against later, and they help if you sell.

Every so often, look in the roof space with a torch, keeping to boarded areas. The underside often shows problems before the outside does. Photograph anything new.

What we are asked to look at in Sheerwater

Chimney tops take the worst of the weather. From the ground, you rarely see cracked flaunching or loose pots. A drone gets close enough to see them in detail.

A survey can pick up problems like:

  • Tired mortar and pots at the top of a stack
  • Vegetation in valleys and gutters
  • Hidden gutters full of leaves
  • Blistered or cracked flat roof coverings

Shop and office owners around The Peacocks may find that thermal images can show trapped moisture across a wide commercial roof.

Before booking any roof surveyor

  • What the survey won’t cover
  • Their report turnaround times
  • Whether they hold professional indemnity and public liability insurance
  • Which viewpoints they use to see the roof

What to expect from a roof survey

Rented homes, blocks and businesses

Buyers’ agents can book surveys on behalf of their clients. The report is emailed, so it can go straight to your client, photos included.

We survey roofs for landlords and agents as well as householders. A photo-illustrated written report gives you a clear record of the roof.

How we price drone roof surveys

All our prices include VAT. The things that change the price are:

  • House, block, shop or office
  • How tall the building is and how easy the roof is to see
  • Whether you choose the Basic, Standard or Premium Survey
  • Extra roofs, like extensions, dormers or garages

Every price we give includes VAT, and the written report is part of the package. Our price is from £400, including VAT. Size, height and access decide where your roof falls.

What to let us know when you contact us

You do not need to know any roofing terms. Just tell us:

  • Pictures from the garden or a window, if you have them
  • Any marks or damp showing indoors
  • Any deadline, such as an exchange date
  • Access details, such as a loft hatch or a shared roof

Photos help, if you have them. Take them safely from ground level or a window; never climb up to get a better view. To send them or to book, call 07833 053749 or drop us an email.

Sheerwater questions

Are there drone restrictions around Sheerwater?

That depends on where the roof is and on the weather. Sheerwater is about 2 miles from Fairoaks Airport, so the Drone Safety Map is checked for restrictions around it before we fly. A small drone cannot fly safely in strong wind or a downpour.

Is my home in Sheerwater listed or in a conservation area?

For listing, use Historic England’s list; for conservation areas, ask the council. The answer matters most when a change of material is on the cards.

How long will you be at the property?

That depends on the size and shape of the roof; most visits take roughly 1–2 hours at a house, including the airspace and weather checks before take-off. The written report follows by email.

Will you check the loft?

Yes, where the survey calls for it and there is safe access. Inside, we look for damp, staining, gaps and sagging.

Is Sheerwater in your area?

Yes, we do. We carry out drone roof surveys in Sheerwater, and the service is the same as everywhere else we work.

How soon will I get the report?

Report times are set by the package. Basic is within 48 hours, Standard is 24–48 hours and Premium is the same day. Mention any deadline when you book.

Does the weather affect the survey?

It can, depending on the survey. Drone flights need calm, dry weather, and thermal imaging works best with a dry roof, little wind and a sunny day beforehand. We’ll rearrange with you if the weather is not right.

Drone roof surveys around Sheerwater

Sheerwater is about 2 miles from Fairoaks Airport, so the Drone Safety Map is checked for restrictions around it before we fly. With Botleys Mansion about 2.8 miles north, Sheerwater sits in an area with a long building history. Older homes in the wider area often have features worth a closer look, such as lead valleys, tall stacks and roofs that have been patched over the years.

For an older house near a landmark like St. Michaels Church, older roofs can be steep and hard to see from the street, which is where close-up aerial shots and thermal images help. If you look after a building such as Broadmere Primary Academy, thermal images can show where wet insulation sits under a big flat roof.

Sheerwater is about 2 miles north-east of Woking, in Surrey. In Sheerwater, as across Surrey, every roof gets the same careful survey. Sheerwater is one of the places in Surrey where we work for drone roof surveys. Guildford is in our area too.

The nearest railway station is West Byfleet station, roughly 1.1 miles north-east. What happens if roof problems are left?

From ground level, you’re guessing about most of a tall roof. Close-up photos show what’s really there. It’s far easier to plan work when you can see the problem. In a small place like Sheerwater, homes can be exposed to wind and rain, which finds any gap, and older walls, once damp, take a long time to dry.

One thing that affects the price is the package: Basic from £150, Standard from £250 or Premium from £400, all inc. VAT. The roof’s size, height and access matter as well.
