Drone roof survey in St Helens

Drone surveys suit tall houses, blocks of flats, steep roofs and large commercial roofs. They also suit fragile roofs that nobody should walk on, such as old slate, clay tiles or cement sheets. You get close-up views without anyone setting foot on the roof. We check the airspace for your address ahead of the visit. We’ll tell you if another approach would work better. If you are worried about ridge pieces that have lifted and standing water on a flat roof, we can find out what’s behind it, whatever the roof.

Somewhere as small as St Helens, older roofs are often steep and partly hidden by trees or outbuildings. Close-up drone photos and thermal images help show what cannot be reached safely. Both the forecast and the airspace are checked first. Steep slopes and tall chimney stacks are where a close-up view adds the most.

We write the report in plain English, so you don’t need to be a roofer to follow it. Each point is backed by a photograph where possible, and recommendations are put by urgency where it matters.

What a drone roof survey looks like in St Helens

St Helens is within about 2 miles of the coast, where wind off the sea can be strong. A small drone cannot fly safely in strong wind or heavy rain, so the weather on the day decides whether a flight goes ahead. Bembridge Airport is about 2 miles away, so we check the Drone Safety Map for restrictions before any flight.

If you look after a building like St Helens Primary School, a drone or thermal camera can show a large roof in a single visit. With Yaverland Manor about 2.1 miles south-west, the area around St Helens has a long history. For older roofs nearby, a look by drone or thermal camera is a hands-off way to check condition.

St Helens is about 3 miles south-east of Ryde, in the Isle of Wight. Anywhere in St Helens, we can carry out drone roof surveys at your property. We cover towns and villages across the Isle of Wight. Our Portsmouth page covers surveys nearby.

Every address in PO33 is covered for drone roof surveys, from the main roads to the quietest streets. We cover properties on Station Road, Upper Green Road and Old Chapel Lane. If you’re just outside St Helens, we cover Gaskins (1 mile south-west), Brading (2 miles south-west), Yarbridge (2 miles south-west), Morton (2 miles south-west) and Yaverland (3 miles south-west). Further out, we also cover Newport (8 miles west), Ryde (3 miles north-west), Cowes (9 miles north-west), Sandown (4 miles south-west), Shanklin (5 miles south-west) and Ventnor (8 miles south-west). Harder-to-reach addresses take a little more planning, so tell us where you are as you book.

Checking the roof from the ground

A lot can be seen from the ground. Binoculars help you spot slipped slates or tiles, gaps along the ridge and a leaning stack. Please don’t climb up for a closer look.

What you cannot do safely is get up close. Roofs are fragile and slippery, and a fall can be serious. That’s where a survey comes in, using safe viewpoints and a drone where applicable.

Common roof problems in St Helens

Walking on some roofs does more harm than good. Old slates and clay tiles crack underfoot, and some sheet roofs are fragile. A drone lets us see them closely without touching them.

A survey can pick up problems such as:

  • Hidden gutters full of leaves
  • Eroded pointing on a chimney stack
  • Standing water on a flat roof
  • Worn lead at chimneys and walls

The streets around a church like St Catherine-by-the-Green are frequently among the oldest in a place, and if yours is one of the older homes nearby, thin or patchy insulation under an old roof often shows up clearly on a thermal image.

Useful tips for St Helens property owners

Getting the most from a drone roof survey starts before we arrive and carries on afterwards. Tips:

  • Clear a spot on the drive or lawn
  • Be ready to move the date if the weather turns
  • Expect a little longer if permission is needed
  • Make sure the loft can be reached

Keep the photos with your property records. They’re a useful baseline for future surveys.

Check the loft now and then, with care and a good torch. A drone sees the outside, but the loft shows leaks and condensation from below. Take photos of any changes.

What a survey costs

Prices always include VAT. What changes the price is:

  • Height and safe access
  • Roof area
  • The type of building, from a house to a block or an office
  • The use of thermal imaging or a drone

Thermal imaging and drone inspection (where applicable) come with the Premium Survey, from £400 with VAT included. We will tell you which package suits the questions you have.

What we need to know

Before you get in touch, it helps to have:

  • Photos of the roof, taken safely from ground level or a window
  • Anything about access we should know
  • The type of building and roof, such as pitched or flat
  • Why you want a survey: buying, a leak, a storm or new work

You can call us seven days a week. For a price or to book, phone 07833 053749 or send us an email.

How it works

We do not take risks to get a closer look. We inspect everything that’s safely in view, and if part of the roof can’t be seen, the report says so. Most visits take about 1–2 hours for a house, and about three to four hours for a commercial roof. In a hamlet or village like St Helens, a postcode doesn’t always lead to the right gate, so a few directions, or a note of a nearby landmark, help us arrive on time. After that, the survey runs as it would anywhere.

  1. First, we check whether a drone is the right tool.
  2. A date is fixed, with a fallback in case the weather turns.
  3. We fly over the roof, keeping the camera on the property we’re surveying.
  4. Where there is safe access, we check the loft as well.
  5. The report sets out what we found, with photos and recommendations.

Preparing for the visit

  • If it is not your property yet, arrange access through the agent
  • Jot down any questions you want answered
  • If the roof is shared, arrange access with whoever manages the building

How to book

Our price is from £400, including VAT. The exact figure depends on the roof and the package, and you can phone 07833 053749 or send us an email to find out.

St Helens: your questions answered

Do you cover smaller places like St Helens?

Yes. St Helens is within the area we cover, which takes in towns, villages and rural addresses. Our area covers London and South East England. Just mention lanes, gates or anything else about the route when you book.

How do I find out if my home in St Helens is listed?

Start with Historic England’s list for listing and your council for conservation areas. Either can affect what roof work is allowed, so it’s worth checking before planning any.

Do you take photos of the roof?

Yes, plenty. Pictures sit next to the findings they show.

How much does a drone roof survey cost in St Helens?

Prices start from £400, including VAT. What you pay for your roof depends on its size, height, access and the package.

How soon will I get the report?

Basic reports arrive within 48 hours, Standard reports in 24–48 hours and Premium reports on the same day. Each one is emailed.

Is it a structural engineer’s report?

No. We point out what can be seen, like sagging or deflection, but we do not carry out calculations or give an engineer’s opinion. Where an engineer is needed, we say so in the report.

What do I do with the report?

You’ll get the report by email, with photographs and clear recommendations. The Standard Survey includes a follow-up consultation, and the Premium Survey an in-person consultation, so you can talk the findings through.
