Drone roof survey in Yaverland: what you get
Drone surveys suit tall houses, blocks of flats, steep roofs and large commercial roofs. They also suit fragile roofs that nobody should walk on, like old slate, clay tiles or cement sheets. You get close-up views without anyone setting foot on the roof. Before the visit, we check the address for any airspace restrictions that apply. We will tell you if another approach would work better. We survey flat roofs on upper floors, chimney stacks and large and complex roofs, and people most frequently book us about standing water on a flat roof and loose ridge and hip tiles.
Somewhere as small as Yaverland, older roofs are often steep and partly hidden by trees or outbuildings. Close-up drone photos and thermal images help show what cannot be reached safely. Both the forecast and the airspace are checked first. Steep slopes and tall chimney stacks are where a close-up view adds the most.
Where we can’t see part of the roof, the report says so. You’ll know exactly what was inspected and what wasn’t, and what we’d suggest next.

Leave it or get it looked at?
Planning roof work without seeing the roof is a gamble. Our report shows the condition of each area, with recommendations prioritised by urgency where relevant. That helps you put the work in order. In a place like Yaverland, a barn or garage roof left to fail puts whatever is inside at risk. It’s worth including them in a survey before a winter does the damage.
Our price is from £400, including VAT. The final price depends on the size and height of the roof, access and which survey you book.

What we do, step by step
We look at the roof from outside and, where it is relevant and there’s safe access, from inside the loft space too. Inside, we look for staining, damp, gaps and signs of movement. The whole visit normally takes about one to two hours for most homes, with the pre-flight checks included, and longer for big commercial roofs. Cottages and farmhouses around Yaverland frequently have roofs at several levels, with lean-tos and outbuildings attached. Each part is looked at from wherever it can safely be seen, and anything we cannot see is noted.
- We start by making sure a drone flight makes sense for the roof.
- A date is fixed, with a fallback in case the weather turns.
- Aerial photos are taken of your roof only, not the neighbours’.
- We also look inside the loft space where it is safe.
- Everything is written up, with the aerial photos and our advice.
Before the survey
- If you are buying, check with the agent that we can get in
- Jot down any questions you want answered
- Keep pets in another room

Honest limits
In fairness, there are limits to any roof survey:
- Neighbouring roofs the owner hasn’t asked us to survey
- The underside of the roof (that needs an inside check)
- A structural engineer’s report
If you’re not sure which survey you need, phone 07833 053749 or drop us an email and we will give you a straight answer. What a survey covers and does not.

- Flat roofs on upper floors
Common roof problems in Yaverland
Hidden gutters and valleys are easy to overlook. Debris collects where nobody looks, until it causes a leak inside. From above, they’re easy to see.
A survey can pick up problems such as:
- Slates or tiles shifted by high winds
- Coverings that have slipped high up on the roof
- Moss and weeds taking hold up top
- Ridge and hip pieces working loose
Yaverland Manor, about 0.5 miles north, is one of the historic houses in the wider area around Yaverland. For older roofs nearby, a look by drone or thermal camera is a hands-off way to check condition.
What to check before booking
- Their drone registration, if they fly one
- Whether they hold professional indemnity and public liability insurance
- How much experience they have with roofs like yours
- Is VAT included in the price?
Tips that help
There’s plenty you can do without going near the roof. What helps most:
- Keep pets indoors during the flight
- Let us know what you want to see
- Share the postcode so we can check for restrictions
- Expect us to rearrange if it’s too windy or wet
The Premium Survey report comes the same day. Drone photos are included where we could fly, alongside the other checks in the package.
Keep gutters, valleys and outlets clear, ideally once the leaves have fallen. On high roofs, leave clearing to a professional. Many leaks start with a blocked outlet.
What a drone roof survey looks like in Yaverland
Yaverland is within about 1 mile of the coast, where wind off the sea can be strong. The weather on the day decides whether a flight goes ahead, as a small drone can’t fly safely in strong wind or a downpour. Yaverland is about 2 miles from Sandown Airport, so the Drone Safety Map is checked for restrictions around it before we fly.
If you look after a building like The Bay Church of England School, a drone or thermal camera can show a large roof in a single visit. The streets around a church like St John the Baptist Church are often among the oldest in a place, and if your home is one of the older ones nearby, older roofs can be steep and hard to see from the street, which is where close-up aerial shots and thermal images help.

Your questions about drone roof surveys in Yaverland
Is my home in Yaverland listed or in a conservation area?
Start with Historic England’s list for listing and your council for conservation areas. It is worth checking before planning roof work, as both can affect what’s allowed.
Can you fly a drone over a roof in Yaverland?
That depends on where the roof is and on the weather. Sandown Airport is about 2 miles away, so we check the Drone Safety Map for restrictions before any flight. High wind or heavy rain also stops a small drone flying.
Is this an asbestos survey?
No. Asbestos surveys and testing aren’t part of what we do. We flag materials that could contain asbestos, such as cement sheets or soffits on pre-2000 buildings, and recommend a specialist asbestos surveyor checks them before they’re disturbed.
Will you walk on the roof?
Not unless it’s safe. Safe viewpoints, the loft space and a drone where it applies cover most of what’s needed, and anything out of sight is recorded in the report.
When does the report arrive?
The Premium Survey report comes the same day, the Standard within 24–48 hours and the Basic within 48 hours. Each one is emailed.
Can you survey at the weekend?
We survey seven days a week: weekdays, Saturdays and Sundays. Tell us which days suit you when you book.
What will the report tell me?
Written findings with photographs, explaining the condition of the roof, any defects and our recommendations. The Standard Survey adds moisture detection and a structural check, and the Premium Survey adds thermal imaging, drone inspection where it applies and structural analysis.
Other services in Yaverland
Different roofs, different checks
Steep slate and tile slopes
Walking on fragile coverings can break them. A drone avoids that, so the survey doesn’t add damage.
Flat roofs on tall buildings
The flat roof on top of a block is rarely looked at. A drone shows ponding, splits, blisters and worn upstands.
