Honest limits

It’s a careful look at the roof, not the whole story. Its limits include:

  • Photos in conditions too poor to fly
  • Neighbouring roofs the owner hasn’t asked us to survey
  • What’s under the slates, tiles or felt

If in doubt, ring 07833 053749 or drop us an email and we’ll suggest the right survey. What our survey covers.

Drone roof surveys for homes and businesses in Tankerton

Our drone weighs under 250g, and we hold a CAA Flyer ID and Operator ID. We keep it in sight throughout, and well below the 120-metre height limit. Every flight is planned around the roof, the site and the people nearby. Before every flight, we check the airspace and the weather. Safety comes first on every visit. We survey large and complex roofs, flat roofs on upper floors and chimney stacks, and the problems we are asked to look at most are vegetation in valleys and gutters and lifted or split lead flashings.

Even in a smaller place like Tankerton, there may be airfields or restrictions nearby, so every drone flight starts with a check of the Drone Safety Map. Exposed sites can be windy, and a small drone cannot fly safely in strong wind. Neighbours’ privacy is part of planning each flight, along with the airspace and the weather.

Where we can’t see part of the roof, the report says so. That way, it’s clear what was covered and what wasn’t, and what we’d suggest next.

Tankerton: your questions answered

Is Tankerton within the area you cover?

We do. Villages and rural addresses get the same survey as a town house.

Does a conservation area affect roof work in Tankerton?

We can’t confirm that for you, but Historic England’s list and your council can. A change of roofing material may need consent in either case.

Do you carry professional indemnity insurance?

Our surveys are covered by professional indemnity and public liability insurance. If you need details for a managing agent or a building owner, just ask.

Are you registered with the CAA?

Yes. We hold a CAA Flyer ID and Operator ID. Our drone weighs under 250g and keep it in sight at all times.

Do drone rules differ in central London?

Parts of central London are restricted, including areas over Hyde Park, the City of London and the Isle of Dogs, where flights need permission from NATS. We check the airspace for your address and apply where needed.

Can you survey at the weekend?

Visits run seven days a week in the daytime. Just say which days work for you.

Is it the same as a RICS Level 2 or Level 3 survey?

No. We are experienced roof surveyors, and our survey covers the roof rather than the whole building. For the rest of the building, a RICS home survey is a separate job.

Signs you need a drone roof survey in Tankerton

Not every roof can take a person’s weight. Old slates and clay tiles crack underfoot, and fragile sheet roofs are dangerous to walk on. A drone lets us see them closely without touching them.

People typically book a survey when they’ve noticed one of these:

  • Loose ridge and hip tiles
  • Vegetation in valleys and gutters
  • Slipped or missing slates on a high roof
  • Chimney tops in poor condition

If yours is one of the older homes in the streets near Church of All Saints, tall stacks and steep slopes are easier to judge with close-up aerial photos than from the pavement.

What a good roof survey covers

Drone roof surveys in Tankerton: local notes

Tankerton is within about 1 mile of the coast, where wind off the sea can be strong. A small drone can’t fly safely in high wind or heavy rain, so the weather on the day decides whether a flight goes ahead. Older houses across Kent often have handmade clay or peg tiles, and many have tile-hung walls. You’ll also find oast houses and timber-framed Wealden hall houses among the county’s older buildings. Older coverings on steep or tall roofs are hard to judge from below, so close-up close-up aerial shots and thermal images help.

Take a building like St Mary's Catholic Primary School: a drone or thermal camera can show a large roof in a single visit.

Tankerton is about 1 mile north-east of Whitstable, in Kent. Tankerton gets the same service as everywhere else we work: a careful inspection, photos and a written report. Our Kent coverage includes Tankerton and the places around it. Our Canterbury page covers surveys nearby.

Tips that help

Small things make a difference, both for the survey and for the roof itself. Some pointers:

  • Let us know what you want to see
  • Share the postcode so we can check for restrictions
  • Keep pets indoors during the flight
  • Check the loft can be reached

With the Premium Survey, the report arrives the same day. It includes the drone photos where a flight was possible, alongside the other checks in the package.

Don’t block the vents at the eaves. Condensation in the loft can damage timbers and insulation. Make sure insulation doesn’t block the airflow.

The survey, step by step

The visit usually starts outside and finishes in the loft: first the slopes, edges and gutters from every safe viewpoint, then the loft space where it can be reached. All told, expect an hour or two at most homes, and more on a big or complicated roof. In a smaller place like Tankerton, as anywhere, the forecast plays a part: the parts that need calm, dry weather are planned around it.

  1. First, we check the address for flight restrictions.
  2. If permission is needed, we ask for it ahead of the visit.
  3. We assess the wind, the weather and the surroundings before take-off.
  4. The drone captures close-up photos of the coverings, chimneys, valleys and gutters.
  5. You receive a written report with photos and recommendations.

What a survey costs

Several things affect the price of a survey:

  • Roof area
  • The use of thermal imaging or a drone
  • Commercial roofs and larger buildings
  • How complicated the roof is, with its valleys, chimneys and parapets

Every price we give includes VAT. Our price is from £400, including VAT. You will know the price for your survey before booking.

Helping us price your survey

To price your survey accurately, we’ll ask about:

  • The address and postcode of the property
  • Any photos you have, taken from ground level or a window
  • Where water is showing inside, if it is
  • Access details, such as a loft hatch or a shared roof

Not sure which survey you need? The easiest way is to ring 07833 053749 or use the contact form and describe the roof and why you want it surveyed. We’ll explain the options and the price.

Leave it or get it looked at?

Faults on high roofs tend to be found late. By that stage the damage has spread inside. A drone survey finds them sooner. In an older home around Tankerton, water from a roof defect can get into timber and plaster, which is far harder to put right than the roof fault itself.

Prices start from £150, inc. VAT, for a Basic Survey. The Standard Survey starts from £250 and the Premium Survey from £400. We confirm the price for your survey before you book.
