Electronic Leak Detection in The Pound
Electronic leak detection across The Pound, with over 20 years’ experience behind it. Every survey ends with a written report and photographs.
- Leaks showing away from the breach
- Leaking laps in the waterproofing
- Leaks that return after repairs
Electronic leak detection in The Pound: what you get
Electronic leak detection, or ELD, finds holes in flat roof waterproofing membranes. It works with an electrical current which can only get through the membrane at a breach. That lets us locate holes that are too small to see so your roofer knows exactly where to repair. You get a photo-illustrated written report of each breach found. We survey roof terraces and balconies, commercial flat roofs and green roofs, and people most often book us about water coming in under a flat roof and repairs that haven’t stopped the leak.
In a village or hamlet like The Pound, flat roofs are usually on extensions, garages, outbuildings or barn conversions. They need the same care as any town roof: the covering, the edges, the upstands and where water drains away. We simply plan the journey and access beforehand. Garages and outbuildings are easy to forget, so mention any you want included when booking.
The report is written in plain words, so you do not need to be a roofer to follow it. Photographs show what each point refers to.

Electronic leak detection in The Pound: local notes
An older home may be listed, or stand in a conservation area. Historic England’s list shows listed buildings, and the council can say whether a street is in a conservation area. In either case, a change of roofing material may need consent. In Sussex, older roofs are frequently handmade clay tile, frequently with tile-hanging on the walls below. Horsham stone slab roofs survive on some old Sussex buildings, alongside oast houses and timber-framed Wealden hall houses. Alongside them, flat-roofed extensions, dormers, garages and commercial units are common almost everywhere.
Take an older house close to Parish Church of St Peter: the flat roofs on later extensions tend to wear out long before the main roof. Landlords with a home close to Battle station may find that flat roofs over rear additions and dormers in rented property are worth checking between tenancies.

Liquid-applied waterproofing
Liquid waterproofing has no laps but holes and thin areas can occur. Suitability for ELD depends on the system.
Your questions about electronic leak detection in The Pound
Is my home in The Pound listed or in a conservation area?
Check Historic England’s online list first, then ask the council about conservation areas and any Article 4 direction. It matters most if you are planning to re-roof in a different material.
Do you cover smaller places like The Pound?
Yes, The Pound is on our map. A small place gets exactly the same survey as a big one, with the route planned beforehand.
What does electronic leak detection do?
It uses an electrical current to find breaches in a flat roof membrane. A breach lets the current through, which shows us where the hole is.
Do you use drones?
Where it helps and it’s safe, yes. Whether we can fly on the day depends on the weather and the airspace rules. We hold a CAA Flyer ID and Operator ID.
Can you give me structural calculations?
No. We are roof surveyors, not structural engineers, and it doesn’t include calculations. If we see signs that need an engineer’s opinion, we will recommend one.
How do you choose the testing method?
We choose the method that suits the roof. You will know which method we plan to use before we start.
Can you test a green or ballasted roof?
In some cases. The layers on top and the build-up below decide it, and some may need lifting. We will discuss it before we quote.
What happens if roof problems are left?
A visual inspection can miss tiny holes. Electronic testing can find breaches you cannot see by eye where the roof suits it. Outbuildings and barns around The Pound are easy to forget, but a failed roof there can spoil what’s stored inside. It’s worth including them in a survey before a winter does the damage.
The cost of a survey depends on the roof: how big it is, how high it is, the number of separate roofs and how safely it can be seen. Electronic leak detection is quoted for your roof, because the method depends on the roof.

What affects the cost of electronic leak detection
A few things affect what a survey costs:
- Whether thermal imaging or a drone is needed
- The roof’s overall size
- Features like valleys, chimneys, dormers and parapets
- The height of the building and how the roof can safely be seen
All our prices include VAT. Electronic leak detection is quoted for your roof, because the method depends on the roof. You will know the price for your roof before you book.
Booking your survey
We’ll normally ask about:
- The kind of building and roof involved
- Where water is showing inside, if it is
- The property’s address and postcode
- Access details, such as a loft hatch or a shared roof
Every survey is priced before it’s booked, so you know where you stand. Electronic leak detection is quoted for your roof, because the method depends on the roof. For a price for your roof, ring 07833 053749 or use the contact form.
Should I look at the roof myself first?
What you can’t do safely is get up close. Roofs are fragile and slippery. That part is for a survey, using safe viewpoints and a drone where it applies.
Your own check is a good start, but it isn’t a survey. From ground level, valleys, flashings and the backs of chimneys are often out of sight, and those are details a survey looks at closely.

What we do, step by step
Time on site depends on the size and shape of the roof; as a rough guide, the survey takes more time on a big roof than a small one, with the construction of the roof playing a part too. You are welcome to ask questions while we’re there. In a small place like The Pound, access is typically the main thing to plan. Let us know about outbuildings, past repairs and any leaks you’ve noticed. Visits can be on weekdays, Saturdays or Sundays.
- First, you let us know about the roof build-up and where water is showing.
- We confirm whether the roof is suitable for electronic testing.
- The testing method is chosen to suit the membrane and build-up.
- We test the membrane and find where current is passing through it.
- The breaches are recorded with photographs in a report for your roofer.
