Gutter Survey in The Pound
An experienced roof surveyor for gutter surveys in The Pound. More than 20 years and over 5,000 surveys.
- Valley or box gutters that overflow inside
- Joints that drip after rain
- Overflowing eaves gutters
What we do, step by step
Every visit follows the same pattern: we hear what you’ve seen, look at the roof from every safe viewpoint, take photographs as we go and record our findings for the written report. It typically takes about one to two hours at a house, depending on how many gutter runs and downpipes there are. Around The Pound, older homes can have small or awkward roof spaces, so tell us about the loft hatch and any ladder. We only go where it is safe.
- You let us know where you’ve seen overflows, drips or damp.
- We walk round the building and check the gutters, downpipes and fascias from ground level.
- We check hidden gutters as far as safe access allows.
- The roof space is checked for staining, where it can be reached safely.
- You receive a report with photos and recommendations.
How to prepare
- Keep pets out of the way during the survey
- Leave side gates unlocked
- If you are buying, let the agent know when we are coming

Gutter surveys for homes and businesses in The Pound
Most blocked gutters are full of leaves, moss or silt. Homes close to trees fill their gutters faster, and moss washing off a tiled or slate roof adds to it. We note where gutters are clogged or holding water and where outlets or hoppers are choked and whether any overflows are doing their job. The photographs show you exactly what we found. Blocked gutters are easy to put off, but they rarely get better. We survey parapet and box gutters, downpipes and valley gutters, and common reasons people get in touch are valley or box gutters that overflow inside and rotten fascias or stained soffits.
In a village or hamlet like The Pound, older cottages and farmhouses frequently sit alongside barns, outbuildings and a few newer houses. Roofs there can be clay tile, slate, stone or thatch, and chimney stacks are often old. Each needs checking in its own way, and thatch is a specialist material we report on as far as it can be seen. Chimneys and lead flashings on old roofs often need the most attention.
How fast the report arrives depends on the package: the Basic Survey within 48 hours, the Standard Survey in 24 to 48 hours and the Premium Survey on the same day.

Why it’s worth a survey now in The Pound
Our report is a dated record of what we found, useful when you’re planning maintenance or getting work priced. Without it, you are relying on what can be seen from the pavement. Older cottages and farmhouses around The Pound can have roof timbers that have been there a very long time, and water through a failed covering can rot timber if it’s left.
Prices start from £150, including VAT. The final price depends on how big and how high the roof is, how it can safely be seen and the package you choose.

For landlords and managing agents
Where a roof is shared: we need access agreed with the building owner or managing agent. Mention it when you get in touch and we will plan the visit with that in mind.
We survey roofs for letting agents and landlords as well as homeowners. A written report with photos gives you a clear record of the gutter, useful for planning maintenance.
Signs you need a gutter survey in The Pound
Gutter brackets work loose or corrode with age. A gutter full of wet debris is heavy and the extra load drags the gutter down. Once the fall is lost, water sits at the low point and spills over.
Here are some of the things we see often:
- Cracked or loose downpipes
- Overflowing valley or parapet gutters
- Gutters full of debris and silt
- Gutters that have fallen out of line
Living close to Ashburnham Park is pleasant, but mature trees mean leaves in gutters and valleys each autumn.

Roofs, chimneys and gutters in The Pound
Older buildings may be listed or sit in a conservation area. Historic England’s list shows listed buildings, and the council can say whether a street is in a conservation area. Re-roofing in different materials may need permission there. Handmade clay tiles and tile-hung upper walls are typical of older Sussex houses. A few old Sussex buildings still carry heavy Horsham stone slabs, and the county’s older buildings include oast houses and Wealden hall houses. On roofs like these, good slates or tiles can outlast the nails, battens, lead and mortar around them.
Take an older house close to Parish Church of St Peter: its roof may have old fixings, lead flashings and chimneys that need a closer look. Landlords with a home close to Battle station may find that a roof report between tenancies helps plan work before a small defect becomes a tenant’s leak.

The Pound: your questions answered
Do you cover smaller places like The Pound?
Yes. The Pound is within the area we cover, which takes in towns, villages and rural addresses. We work right across London and the South East. Let us know about access, parking and anything unusual about getting there when you book.
Does a conservation area affect roof work in The Pound?
For listing, use Historic England’s list; for conservation areas, ask the council. It matters most if you are planning to re-roof in a different material.
Could my damp wall be caused by the gutters?
Leaking gutters and downpipes are a common cause of damp walls, and the survey looks for that. If the cause looks like something else, the report says so as far as we can tell from what’s visible.
Do you survey at weekends?
Yes, we carry out surveys on Saturdays and Sundays as well as weekdays. To book, call 07833 053749 or email us.
Are you insured?
Our cover is professional indemnity plus public liability, and we can provide details if a managing agent needs them.
I live in a flat. Can you survey the roof?
Yes, once access has been agreed. The roof of a block or converted house is frequently shared, so we need permission from whoever owns or manages the building. We can only inspect what we’re given access to.
When does the report arrive?
Basic reports arrive within 48 hours, Standard reports in 24–48 hours and Premium reports on the same day. Each one is emailed, ready to forward.
How the survey changes by roof type
Box and secret gutters
Box and secret gutters often cause leaks indoors. We check the outlets, linings and overflows where safe.
Fascias and soffits
Fascias carry the gutters, so rot in the boards can loosen the whole run. Damaged or stained boards are recorded.
Should I look at the roof myself first?
After strong wind, take a look from the pavement or garden: broken slates or tiles in the garden, gaps along the ridge or loose lead are signs to note. Leave anything above ground level to a survey.
A lot can be seen from the ground. Binoculars help you spot slipped slates or tiles, gaps along the ridge and a leaning stack. Never climb onto the roof to look.
