About our flat roof survey in Churt
A Basic Survey, from £150, covers a visual inspection, a condition report, photos and written recommendations. For moisture detection and a structural check, the Standard Survey starts from £250. On a flat roof, moisture readings can help show whether water has got under the covering. Larger commercial roofs are quoted for their size. If you are worried about ponding water that doesn’t drain away and blisters and bubbles in the covering, a survey will tell you what’s going on.
Older buildings in small places like Churt may be listed or in a conservation area, and that can affect how an extension roof or dormer is re-covered. If you are planning work, check with the council first. Finding out what state the roof is in gives you the facts to plan with. Changes that affect a listed building’s special interest need listed building consent.
Every survey ends with a written report, with photos, emailed to you. It sets out the condition of the flat roof, any defects and our written recommendations.

What we cannot see
Every survey has limits, and it’s better to know them up front. Bear these in mind:
- Whether old sheeting or boards contain asbestos
- Areas we can’t see or reach safely, including fragile rooflights and sheeting
- The condition of the deck or insulation hidden under the covering
If you are not sure which survey you need, call 07833 053749 or drop us an email and we’ll give you a straight answer. The full list of what we check.
Roof types and parts we check
- EPDM rubber
- Upstands and outlets
- GRP fibreglass
- Mastic asphalt
- Single-ply membranes
- Felt flat roofs
Roof by roof
Single-ply membranes
Single-ply membranes can be damaged by foot traffic and equipment on the roof. We note any punctures, tears and loose areas we can see.
GRP fibreglass
GRP roofs can last up to about 30 years when they’re laid well. Hairline cracks over board joints are an early warning we look out for.
What we do, step by step
It’s useful to start with what’s prompted the survey: a purchase, a leak, a storm, new work or simply peace of mind. It helps us focus on what matters most to you. The visit usually takes roughly 1–2 hours at most homes, with bigger or more complicated roofs taking longer. For a village or hamlet like Churt, the journey is planned ahead of time: let us know about narrow lanes, gates, long drives and where we can park. The roof is looked at from ground level, from windows, from the loft where there’s safe access and from the roof where it is safe.
- We start with the details: the address, the roof’s use and any leaks or stains.
- We view the roof from the ground, from windows and from the roof where it’s safe to do so.
- The covering, falls, upstands, outlets, edge trims and rooflights are checked and photographed.
- We check the rooms or spaces under the roof for staining where we can reach them.
- The findings are written up with photos and recommendations and emailed to you.
Getting ready for the survey
- Note where any stains or damp appear
- Clear the way to the loft hatch
- Make a note of anything you’d like us to look at

DIY checks: what’s safe
What you can’t do safely is get up close. Roofs are fragile and slippery, and a fall can be serious. That’s where a survey comes in, using safe viewpoints and a drone where applicable.
Fresh stains on ceilings or walls after rain are worth noting. Take a photo and write down when you saw it, as it helps a surveyor trace the cause.
What affects the cost of flat roof surveys
All our prices include VAT. What changes the price is:
- How complicated the roof is, with its valleys, chimneys and parapets
- The package you choose: Basic, Standard or Premium
- The type of building, from a house to a block or an office
- The size of the roof
We offer three survey packages: Basic from £150, Standard from £250 and Premium from £400, with VAT included. What your roof costs depends on its size, access and what you want to find out.
Helping us price your survey
Here’s what helps us most when you contact us:
- Whether there is a loft hatch, a shared roof or tricky access
- The style of property, from a terrace to a block
- Photos of the roof, taken safely from the ground or a window
- Dates you are working to, such as exchange
You can call us seven days a week. To book or ask a question, ring 07833 053749 or email us.
FAQs for Churt
Is Churt within the area you cover?
Yes, Churt is on our map. Villages and rural addresses get the same survey as a town house.
How do I find out if my home in Churt is listed?
Check Historic England’s online list first, then ask the council about conservation areas and any Article 4 direction. It matters most if you’re planning to re-roof in a different material.
Do you need to get into the loft?
If there’s a loft and safe access to it, yes. From inside, the underside of the roof often shows damp, staining or daylight that cannot be seen from outside.
Is it a structural engineer’s report?
No. We note visible signs like sagging or deflection, but we are not structural engineers and don’t carry out calculations. If we think you need an engineer, the report says so.
When does the report arrive?
Each package has its own report time. Basic is within 48 hours, Standard is 24–48 hours and Premium is the same day. If you have a deadline, such as an exchange date, tell us when booking.
Does the report include photographs?
Yes, plenty. Pictures sit next to the findings they show, so you can see what we mean.
Can you tell me how long my flat roof will last?
We don’t put a figure on it. As a guide, felt often lasts around 15 to 20 years, EPDM often 30 to 50 and GRP up to about 30, but your report describes the actual condition.
Flat roofs in Churt
Handmade clay tiles and tile-hung walls are typical of Surrey’s older houses. Horsham stone slab roofs survive on some old buildings in Surrey. Flat roofs fill the gaps in between, on extensions, garages, dormers and business premises. Listing and conservation areas can both shape what roof work is allowed on an older home. The council is the place to check, along with Historic England’s list, before anyone quotes for re-roofing.
For site and facilities teams at buildings such as St John's CofE Aided Infant School, schools and public buildings frequently have big flat roofs, and their outlets and upstands need regular checks. If yours is one of the older homes in the streets near St John the Evangelist, the joins between later flat roofs and the old walls are where problems normally start. If you own a rental within reach of Haslemere station, flat roofs over rear additions and dormers in rented property are worth checking between tenancies.

Why act early in Churt
By the time a flat roof leak shows indoors, water has already passed through the roof build-up. A survey can find worn areas and failing details before that point, while there is still time to plan the work. In a small place like Churt, homes can be exposed to wind and rain, which finds any gap, and damp in older walls is slow to dry out.
A Basic Survey starts from £150, inc. VAT. The Standard Survey starts from £250 and the Premium Survey from £400. We confirm the exact price before you book.
