Can I check my roof myself?

What you cannot do safely is get up close. Slates, tiles, flat roofs and rooflights can give way. That part is for a survey, using safe viewpoints and a drone where it applies.

A lot can be seen from the ground. With binoculars, look for slipped or missing slates and tiles, gaps along the ridge and leaning chimneys. Please don’t climb up for a closer look.

Flat roof survey in Hambledon: what you get

Standing water is one of the first things we look for on a flat roof. It can point to poor falls, a blocked outlet or a deck that is deflecting. The survey notes any ponding, the state of each outlet and any dips that hint at a sagging deck. Where the deck may be a structural issue, our report says a structural engineer should look at it. Common reasons to book are ponding water that doesn’t drain away and blisters and bubbles in the covering, across mastic asphalt, EPDM rubber and GRP fibreglass.

In a village or hamlet like Hambledon, flat roofs are normally on extensions, garages, outbuildings or barn conversions. They need the same care as any town roof: outlets, upstands, edges and the covering itself. We simply plan the journey and access in advance. Garages and outbuildings are easy to forget, so mention any you want included when booking.

You receive the findings by email, ready to forward to whoever needs them. Turnaround is within 48 hours for Basic, 24–48 hours for Standard and same day for Premium.

Roof by roof

Single-ply membranes

On single-ply roofs, the welds between sheets are the key detail. We check seams, corners and the joints around outlets and upstands.

GRP fibreglass

GRP roofs are laid as a resin and glass-fibre layer over boards. We look for cracks at board joints, around trims and at upstands.

Before and after the survey

Here are a few things we’d tell any owner, before and after a survey:

  • Keep people off the roof unless they need to be there
  • Have the roof looked at again after a severe storm
  • File the paperwork for the roof and any repairs
  • Check from a window for ponding after heavy rain

You can use the report to ask roofers to quote for the same work. With each roofer working from the same list, comparing quotes is simpler. It’s your choice who carries out the work and when.

Small defects are simpler to deal with while they’re still small. A flat roof that is looked after between surveys normally lasts longer.

How it works

There is not much for you to do on the day. Point out anything you’ve noticed, such as stains, drips or loose pieces, and we will get on with the inspection. The survey itself takes roughly 1–2 hours for an extension, garage or dormer roof, and around 3–4 hours for a commercial flat roof. Around Hambledon, older homes can have small or awkward roof spaces, so it is useful to know whether there’s a loft hatch and how easy it is to reach. We only go where it is safe.

  1. You tell us about the roof, its covering if you know it, and any leaks.
  2. The roof is inspected from safe viewpoints, and from the roof itself where that is safe.
  3. The covering, falls, upstands, outlets, edge trims and rooflights are checked and photographed.
  4. Inside, we look for damp and staining under the roof where there’s access.
  5. You get a photo-illustrated written report and our recommendations.

Before the survey

  • Check pets are kept safely away
  • Gather any invoices or paperwork from past roof work
  • Have any questions written down, so nothing gets missed

Common questions in Hambledon

Does a conservation area affect roof work in Hambledon?

The council and Historic England’s list are the places to check. It is worth checking before planning roof work, as both can affect what’s allowed.

Is Hambledon within the area you cover?

We do. Villages and rural addresses get the same survey as a town house, with the route planned beforehand.

Can you survey in bad weather?

Some surveys depend on the weather more than others. Drone flights need calm, dry weather, and thermal imaging works best after a sunny day, with a dry roof and little wind. If the conditions aren’t right, we’ll talk to you about another date.

Do I have to be there for the survey?

Not necessarily. An outside-only look can be arranged beforehand, but anything inside needs someone there to give access.

Which days do you carry out surveys?

We survey seven days a week: Monday to Friday, Saturdays and Sundays. Just tell us the days that suit you.

Do you check flat roofs for asbestos?

We do not carry out asbestos surveys. Older buildings, from before 2000, may have asbestos in cement sheets or soffits. We note anything that could contain it, and a specialist asbestos surveyor should check it before it is disturbed.

Should I worry about standing water on my flat roof?

Ponding is worth looking into. It can point to blocked outlets, poor falls or a deck that is sagging, and it wears the covering faster. Our survey notes the ponding and what seems to be causing it.

Why it is worth a survey now in Hambledon

Waiting for a stain inside means the water has already got through the layers. We can pick up worn covering and failing details sooner, so you can plan the work rather than react to it. In a place like Hambledon, a barn or garage roof left to fail puts whatever is inside at risk. It’s worth including them in a survey before a winter does the damage.

The Premium Survey includes thermal imaging and drone inspection where it applies, from £400 with VAT included. We can help you choose the package that fits what you’d like to know.

Flat roof surveys around Hambledon

Listing and conservation areas can both shape what roof work is allowed on an older home. The council is the place to check, along with Historic England’s list, before anyone quotes for re-roofing. Older houses across Surrey frequently have handmade clay tiles, and many have tile-hanging. Horsham stone slab roofs survive on some old buildings in Surrey. Mixed in with those pitched roofs are lots of flat ones, over rear extensions, dormers, garages and shops.

Take an older house close to Hambledon Church: the flat roofs on later extensions tend to wear out long before the main roof. Anyone responsible for a site like St Dominic's School will know that large flat roofs, common on schools and other public buildings, need their outlets, upstands and coverings checked regularly. If you let a flat or house near Witley station, flat roofs over rear additions and dormers in rented property are worth checking between tenancies.
