Gutter surveys for homes and businesses in Avon Castle
This survey covers rainwater above ground, from the gutters down to where the downpipes meet the ground. It isn’t a CCTV drain survey, so we cannot see inside underground pipes. If the problem looks like a blocked or broken drain below ground, we will say so in the report, so you can get the drains checked separately. Problems above ground, from split hoppers to leaking downpipes, are photographed and noted. We survey parapet and box gutters, fascias and soffits and outlets and hoppers, and common reasons people get in touch are rotten fascias or stained soffits and leaking or loose downpipes.
Some older homes in villages like Avon Castle are listed or in a conservation area. If yours is, re-roofing in different materials may need consent, so the council is the place to check. Knowing the roof’s condition helps you plan ahead with that in mind. Where a building is listed, matching the existing roof materials is often expected.
Where we cannot see part of the gutter, the report says so. That way, it’s clear what was covered and what wasn’t, and what we’d suggest next.

Tips that help
Here are a few things we’d tell any owner:
- Look for downpipes coming loose
- Don’t climb a ladder to look in the gutters
- Note any damp stains below the gutters
- Check the loft with care after heavy rain
Where the evidence points to drains below ground, the report says so, so you can arrange a drain survey. We also note anything else we spot on the roof while we are there.
Do not forget valley, parapet and box gutters. They collect leaves and silt just like eaves gutters but you can’t check them from the street, so ask for them to be included when gutters are cleared.
What affects the price in Avon Castle
When we price a survey, we consider:
- Any need for thermal images or a drone flight
- Which survey package you book
- Features like valleys, chimneys, dormers and parapets
- How big the roof is
Every price we give includes VAT, and the written report is part of the package. Prices start from £150, including VAT. Where your roof sits in the range depends on its size, height and access.
Booking your survey
When you call or email, these details help:

Local roofs in Avon Castle
Some Hampshire villages still have thatched roofs. In this part of the South East, older roofs are mostly slate or clay tile and many newer ones concrete tile. Whichever you have, the details that tend to fail before the covering itself get the closest look. About 3.5 miles south-east lies Avon Tyrrell House, a reminder of how long the area around Avon Castle has been built on. Period homes nearby can have lead valleys, tall chimneys and a patchwork of past repairs, and any change of roofing material on a listed home needs checking with the council first.
For site and facilities teams at buildings such as St Ives Primary & Nursery School, long gutter runs and wide roofs on a building that size are worth checking on a regular cycle. If you live near a park such as Avon Heath Country Park, or anywhere with mature trees, autumn leaves can block gutters and valleys, and an overflowing gutter soon means a wet wall.

Box and secret gutters
Secret gutters are hidden under the edge of the roof covering and is easy to overlook. We look at what’s visible and note what isn’t.
Aluminium and other metal gutters
Joints and fixings are the weak points on metal gutters. We record any corrosion or leaks we see.

What you can safely check yourself
It helps to keep a record: dates of leaks, photos from the ground and any work done on the roof. Share it with us when you book and it will help the survey.
During heavy rain, look at the gutters from ground level or a window. Overflowing water can point to a blockage or a sagging run.

Why it’s worth a survey now in Avon Castle
Climbing a ladder to look in the gutters yourself is risky. From the ground you can spot drips and overflows, but valleys, parapets and box gutters are hard to see. Our survey covers what can safely be seen and records it with photos. In a small place like Avon Castle, homes can be exposed to wind and rain, which finds any gap, and older walls, once damp, take a long time to dry.
The Premium Survey includes thermal imaging and drone inspection where applicable, which starts from £400, inc. VAT. We’ll tell you which package suits the questions you have.
What you get with us
- Insured for professional indemnity and public liability
- Customer satisfaction of 98%
- A written report with photos

How the survey works
Time on site depends on the size and shape of the roof, but as a rough guide the survey takes roughly 1–2 hours at a house, depending on how many gutter runs and downpipes there are. If you have questions on the day, just ask. Somewhere like Avon Castle needs a little journey planning: let us know about lanes, gates and parking. The roof is looked at from the ground, from windows, from the loft where there is safe access and from the roof where it’s safe.
- We ask about overflows, damp or leaks you’ve noticed.
- The eaves gutters, downpipes and fascias are looked at from ground level and vantage points.
- Any valley, parapet or box gutters are looked at as far as safe access allows.
- We look in the roof space, where there is safe access, for signs of water getting in.
- You get a written report with photographs and recommendations.
Preparing for the visit
- Make a note of anything you’d like us to look at
- Let us know about any leaks, stains or damp patches you know of
