Roof by roof

Cast iron gutters

Rust at joints and brackets is the usual weak point on cast iron. Cracks, rust and leaks are recorded as far as we can see them.

Plastic (uPVC) gutters

Older plastic gutters can turn brittle and crack. We check the joints, brackets and falls.

Gutter survey in Chesham Bois

Damp on walls, water marks under a valley or streaks down the brickwork frequently trace back to the gutters. We check whether gutters, outlets or downpipes are the likely source, as far as can be seen safely. Where the cause looks more like the roof covering or a flashing, the report says so. The next step is suggested too. If you’ve noticed hoppers and outlets full of debris and fascia boards damaged by overflowing water, a survey will tell you what’s going on, on parapet and box gutters, fascias and soffits and downpipes alike.

Houses in smaller places like Chesham Bois can face open ground, where wind and driving rain hit the roof harder. Ridge tiles, verges, chimney stacks and flashings take the worst of it. Checking those edges shows whether anything has begun to work loose. Once one ridge tile or slate moves, wind gets under the next one too.

You receive the findings by email, easy to pass on to a roofer, an agent or an insurer. Basic reports come within 48 hours, Standard within 24–48 hours and Premium on the day.

What we do, step by step

We work from the outside in: first the slopes, edges and gutters from every safe viewpoint, then the roof space where it can be reached. All told, expect between one and two hours for a house, while a commercial roof takes nearer three to four hours. Some parts of a survey depend on the weather, so a visit to Chesham Bois is booked with the forecast in mind: the parts that need calm, dry weather are planned around it.

  1. You let us know where you’ve seen overflows, drips or damp.
  2. We walk round the building and check the gutters, downpipes and fascias from the ground.
  3. We check hidden gutters as far as safe access allows.
  4. The roof space is checked for staining, where it can be reached safely.
  5. A report with photos and recommendations follows.

DIY checks: what’s safe

A DIY look is useful, but it isn’t a survey. From the ground, valleys, flashings and the backs of chimneys are often out of sight, and those are details a survey looks at closely.

After strong wind, take a look from the pavement or garden: pieces of tile or slate on the ground, a gap in the ridge or a lifted flashing are all worth noting. Leave anything above ground level to a survey.

Chesham Bois questions

Do you cover smaller places like Chesham Bois?

We do. Villages and rural addresses get the same survey as a town house.

Is my home in Chesham Bois listed or in a conservation area?

Start with Historic England’s list for listing and your council for conservation areas. It is worth checking before planning roof work, as both can affect what’s allowed.

Will you walk on the roof?

Only when it’s safe. Some roofs are too steep or fragile to walk on safely. Safe viewpoints, the loft and a drone where it applies let us see the rest.

What’s in the survey report?

A report with photographs, explaining the condition of the gutter, any defects and our recommendations. The Standard Survey adds moisture detection and a structural check, and the Premium Survey adds thermal imaging, drone inspection where applicable and structural analysis.

Do you check valley and parapet gutters?

Yes. Hidden gutters are a common cause of leaks inside so we pay close attention to them. Parts of them may not be visible, and the report says so.

Is there a good time of year to book a gutter survey?

Whenever suits you. If you’ve already seen a gutter overflowing, it is best not to wait, because the walls take the water.

Can the survey be at a weekend?

Yes, weekend visits are possible as well as weekdays. To book, call 07833 053749 or send us an email.

What we can’t see

Our findings are based on what we can see safely on the day, so there are some things a survey can’t cover:

  • Hidden sections we cannot view safely
  • The inside of buried drains
  • The inside of a downpipe along its whole length

If you are not sure which survey you need, ring 07833 053749 or use the contact form and we’ll give you a straight answer before booking. The full list of what we check.

How we price gutter surveys

When we price a survey, we consider:

  • If the survey needs thermal imaging or a drone
  • Whether you choose the Basic, Standard or Premium Survey
  • The shape of the roof and its details
  • How big the roof is

Gutter survey starts from £150, including VAT. What you pay depends on the size and height of the roof, access and the package you choose.

Booking your survey

There’s no need for technical words. Just let us know:

  • Where any leaks, stains or damp patches show inside
  • Whether there is a loft hatch, a shared roof or tricky access
  • Pictures of the roof from a safe spot, if you have them
  • The kind of building and roof involved

Every survey is priced before it’s booked, so you know where you stand. Prices start from £150, including VAT. To book, call 07833 053749 or drop us an email.

Local roofs in Chesham Bois

A number of Buckinghamshire villages keep thatched roofs on their older buildings. Older houses in the South East often have slate or clay tile roofs, while many later estates have concrete tiles. Whatever the covering, it is frequently the fixings, flashings, valleys and gutters that give out first. With Chenies Manor House about 3.2 miles east, Chesham Bois sits in an area with a long building history. Period homes nearby can have lead valleys, tall chimneys and a patchwork of past repairs.

For site and facilities teams at buildings like Elangeni School, a written record of a large roof helps plan work for the holidays rather than in term time. For landlords with property near Amersham station, the gap between tenancies is a good time to have the roof looked at.

Chesham Bois is about 1 mile north of Amersham, in Buckinghamshire. We carry out gutter surveys in Chesham Bois for houses, flats, blocks and commercial buildings. Chesham Bois is one of the places in Buckinghamshire where we work for gutter surveys. Reading is in our area too.

Do you need a gutter survey in Chesham Bois?

A good many tiled and slate roofs carry moss, and rain washes it down into the gutters. Mixed with grit from the roof, it settles as silt that slows the flow and lets weeds take root.

Most people get in touch after spotting one of these:

  • Leaks at the gutter joints
  • Gutters that have fallen out of line
  • Water backing up from a hidden gutter
  • Hoppers and outlets full of debris

If you live in an older home near Church of St Leonard, old fixings, lead flashings and tall chimneys are typical of older roofs.
