- Gutters overflowing in heavy rain
- Gutters packed with leaves or moss
How a gutter survey works in Clewer
People book a gutter survey when gutters overflow, when damp appears or before the wetter months. Landlords and managing agents use it to plan maintenance, and some buyers want the rainwater system checked before exchange. The survey and report follow the same steps whatever the reason with photos and clear recommendations. We survey on weekdays and at weekends. Common reasons to book are gutters that have fallen out of line and leaking or loose downpipes, on downpipes, fascias and soffits and parapet and box gutters.
Houses in smaller places like Clewer can face open ground, where wind and driving rain hit the roof harder. Ridge tiles, verges, chimney stacks and flashings take the worst of it. A proper look shows whether anything has started to loosen before it lets water in. A loose ridge tile or slate gives the wind something to catch, and others soon follow.
The report is yours to share with whoever needs it: a seller or estate agent, an insurer, a roofer, a builder or a managing agent, whichever applies.

How the survey changes by roof type
Plastic (uPVC) gutters
Plastic rainwater systems are common on homes of many ages. Their joints can leak as the seals wear, and brackets can sag under load.
Box and secret gutters
Secret gutters are hidden under the edge of the roof covering and is easy to overlook. We check what’s visible and note what is not.
The survey, step by step
Every visit follows the same pattern: we listen to what’s been worrying you, look at the roof from every safe viewpoint, take photos as we go and record our findings for the written report. It usually takes an hour or two for most homes, and longer where there are parapet, valley or box gutters to follow. Parking around Clewer is normally easier than in a town centre, but mention lanes, gates or long drives. On bungalows and lower roofs, much can be seen from the ground, with the loft showing the underside.
- We agree which parts of the building you’re most worried about.
- Each gutter run is checked for blockages, sags and leaking joints.
- We check the outlets, hoppers, downpipes and any overflows.
- We check fascias, soffits and walls for water damage.
- Findings are photographed and set out in a written report.
Preparing for the visit

Advice
What a gutter survey doesn’t cover
Without opening up the roof, some things stay hidden, and that sets some limits:

- Damage hidden inside walls or behind boards
- The inside of buried drains

Clewer: your questions answered
Is my home in Clewer listed or in a conservation area?
Historic England’s list shows listed buildings, and the local council can tell you about conservation areas. If a home is listed, changes that affect its special interest need listed building consent, and in a conservation area re-roofing in different materials may need permission.
Do you cover smaller places like Clewer?
Yes, we do. We cover the whole of London and South East England, from towns to the smallest villages. The journey is planned ahead, so it helps to know about access.
What’s the price of a gutter survey?
Our packages start from £150 for Basic, £250 for Standard and £400 for Premium, inc. VAT. For a price for your building, call 07833 053749 or send us an email.
Can you give me structural calculations?
No. Visible signs such as deflection or sagging are recorded, but we do not provide calculations or an engineer’s opinion. The report will say if you need an engineer.
What does the report include?
It works through the roof part by part, in writing and with photos. Points are put in order of urgency where relevant.
Does the report include photographs?
Yes. Photographs are taken throughout the survey, and they go into the written report.

Yes. Surveys are carried out on weekdays, Saturdays and Sundays. Just ring 07833 053749 or send us an email to arrange a day.

Useful tips for Clewer property owners
Getting the most from a gutter survey starts before we arrive and carries on afterwards. Tips:
- Watch for green marks down the brickwork
- Leave gutter checks at height to someone equipped for it
- Look for new stains on ceilings below valleys after rain
- Have gutters cleared at least once a year
Report times depend on the package you choose: within 48 hours for Basic, 24–48 hours for Standard and the same day for Premium. It’s sent to you by email once it is done.
Hidden gutters need clearing too. They collect leaves and silt just like eaves gutters but they’re much harder to spot, so check they’re included in any clearing work.
What we are asked to look at in Clewer
Plenty of tiled and slate roofs carry moss, and rain washes it down into the gutters. With grit from the coverings, it forms a thick sludge that slows the flow and lets weeds take root.
A survey makes sense if you’ve noticed:
- Leaves and moss blocking gutters
- Downpipes that are split or coming away
- Choked outlets or hopper heads
- Soffits marked by water
Living close to The Goswells is pleasant, but mature trees mean leaves in gutters and valleys each autumn, and an overflowing gutter soon means a wet wall.
Before booking any roof surveyor

Clewer homes and their roofs
About 1 mile east lies Windsor Castle, a reminder of how long the area around Clewer has been built on. On older houses around here, roofs often carry the marks of earlier repairs, from replaced slates to new lead, and any change of roofing material on a listed home needs checking with the council first. Older houses in the South East often have slate or clay tile roofs, while many later estates have concrete tiles, with flat-roofed extensions, dormers and garages common everywhere. Whatever the covering, it is frequently the fixings, flashings, valleys and gutters that give out first.
If you look after a building such as St Edward's Catholic First School, long gutter runs and wide roofs on a building that size are worth checking on a regular cycle.
