FAQs for Colgate
Will you come out to Colgate?
Yes, Colgate is covered. Our area covers London and South East England, and smaller places are part of that. The journey is planned ahead, so it helps to know about access.
Can a landlord with a rental near Faygate station book a roof survey?
Yes, that is a common request. We just need to know who will give access, and we can send the report to you or your agent.
When is the best time for a gutter survey?
There’s no wrong time. If you’ve already seen a gutter overflowing, it is best not to wait, because the walls take the water.
What’s the price of a gutter survey?
Our price is from £150, including VAT. The price depends on the size of the building and how easy the gutters are to see. For a price, ring 07833 053749 or email us.
Will you check the drains below ground?
No. Our gutter survey covers rainwater above ground, from the gutters to the bottom of the downpipes. If a drain below ground looks like the cause, the report says so.
When does the report arrive?
Report times are set by the package. Basic: within 48 hours. Standard: 24 to 48 hours. Premium: the same day. Mention any deadline as you book.
Will you fly a drone over my roof?
Yes, where applicable and safe. We’re a CAA-registered drone operator (Flyer ID and Operator ID), flying a sub-250g drone. Drone inspection is part of the Drone Roof Survey and the Premium Survey, where applicable.
Gutter surveys for homes and businesses in Colgate
Gutters are typically fixed to fascia boards, so we check the fascias and soffits too. Water that overflows for long enough can rot timber fascias and mark the soffits underneath. On buildings from before 2000, some soffits and rainwater goods may be asbestos cement. We do not carry out asbestos testing, so we flag anything that might contain it for a specialist asbestos surveyor to check. We survey valley gutters, parapet and box gutters and outlets and hoppers, and the problems we are asked to look at most are joints that drip after rain and blocked outlets and hoppers.
Some older homes in villages like Colgate are listed or in a conservation area. If yours is, re-roofing in different materials may need consent, so the council is the place to check. A roof report helps you plan work with that in mind. Older materials such as clay tiles, slate and stone are often matched when work is done.
After the visit, you get a photo-illustrated written report, sent by email. It explains the condition of the gutter, the defects we found and what we recommend.

DIY checks: what’s safe
During heavy rain, look at the gutters from ground level or a window. Overflowing water can be a sign of a blockage or a gutter that has dropped.
Fresh stains on ceilings or walls after rain are worth noting. Photograph them and note the date.
Practical tips
Small things make a difference, both for the survey and for the roof itself. Some pointers:
- Check for spilling water in a downpour
- Keep climbers away from the eaves
- Get the gutters cleaned out every year
- Ask for valleys and parapet gutters to be cleared too
You receive a written report with photographs and clear written recommendations. Share it with a contractor of your choice so they know what needs doing.
Get the gutters cleared every year, and more frequently if trees overhang the roof. Late autumn, after the leaves have fallen, is a sensible time. Clear gutters can carry water away as they should.
Common roof problems in Colgate
Some gutters may be too small, or have too few downpipes, for the roof they serve. An extension or extra roof slope can add water to an existing gutter and the weakness shows in a heavy downpour.
It is worth booking a survey if you’ve seen:
- Dripping or leaking gutter joints
- Downpipes that are split or coming away
- Blocked outlets and hoppers
- Rotten fascias or stained soffits
Take a building like Colgate Primary School: large buildings have long gutter runs and big roofs that need checking like any other.
Questions to ask before booking
- Their report turnaround times
- Which limits apply to the survey
- Which viewpoints they use to see the roof
- What the report includes, and whether it has photos
What happens on the day
The visit usually starts outside and finishes in the loft: outside views come first, then the loft space if there’s safe access. All told, expect about one to two hours for a house, and more on a big or complicated roof. In a small place like Colgate, access is usually the main thing to plan. Let us know about outbuildings, past repairs and any leaks you’ve noticed. Visits can be on weekdays, Saturdays or Sundays.
- You let us know where you’ve seen overflows, drips or damp.
- The eaves gutters, downpipes and fascias are checked from ground level and windows.
- We check hidden gutters as far as safe access allows.
- Where it’s safe, we check the loft for signs of water.
- You receive a report with photos and recommendations.
Before we arrive
- For flats, make sure roof access has been agreed
- Have any paperwork from past roof work to hand
- Clear the way to the loft hatch

Advice
What we cannot see
It’s a careful look at the gutter, not the whole story. Its limits include:
- The inside of a downpipe along its whole length
- What’s behind fascias and inside walls
- Gutters out of sight from each safe vantage point
If in doubt, ring 07833 053749 or send us an email and we will point you to the right survey. What our survey covers.

Local roofs in Colgate
In Sussex, older roofs are often handmade clay tile, frequently with tile-hanging on the walls below. A few old Sussex buildings still carry heavy Horsham stone slabs. On roofs like these, good slates or tiles can outlast the nails, battens, lead and mortar around them. The wider area around Colgate has a long history of building, with Tyes Place about 4.5 miles south-east. On older houses around here, roofs often carry the marks of earlier repairs, from replaced slates to new lead.
If you run a business near County Mall, knowing the roof’s condition lets you budget for work rather than pay for emergencies. If your home is one of the older ones in the streets near St. Saviour's Church, the nails, lead and mortar on the roof may be wearing out even where the slates or tiles look fine.
Colgate is about 3 miles south-west of Crawley, in West Sussex. Colgate gets the same service as everywhere else we work: a close look at whatever is safely visible, photographs and a clear written report. Our West Sussex coverage includes Colgate and the places around it.
Surveys in RH13 and RH12 are booked the same way as anywhere else. If you need a gutter survey at a property on Forest Road, Vicarage Close and Blackhouse Road or a nearby road, we can help. Within a short drive, we also cover Crawley (3 miles north-east), Horsham (4 miles west), Haywards Heath (9 miles south-east), Burgess Hill (10 miles south-east), East Grinstead (11 miles east) and Storrington (14 miles south-west).

What affects the price in Colgate
Our packages start from £150, including VAT. What you pay for your roof depends on:
- How tall the building is and how easy the roof is to see
- Extensions, dormers and garages with roofs of their own
- Roof area
- The use of thermal imaging or a drone
Larger roofs, taller buildings and commercial roofs take longer, so they’re priced to match. The price is confirmed before you book.
Helping us price your survey
To price your survey accurately, we’ll ask about:
- Pictures from the garden or a window, if you have them
- Where water is showing inside, if it is
- The property’s address and postcode
- Dates you are working to, such as exchange
Most bookings start with a short call: ring 07833 053749 or send us an email. You will have a price before anything is arranged.
