Gutter surveys in Eastergate

Gutter survey in Eastergate: what you get

Damp patches on inside walls, stains below a valley or water running down the brickwork frequently trace back to the gutters. We check whether gutters, outlets or downpipes are the likely source, as far as can safely be seen. If the evidence points elsewhere, like a flashing or the roof covering, we’ll say so. The next step is suggested too. If you’ve noticed dripping or leaking gutter joints and soffits marked by water, we can find out what’s behind it.

Some older homes in villages like Eastergate are listed or in a conservation area. That can affect what materials can be used when work is done, so check with the council before planning anything. Knowing the roof’s condition helps you plan ahead with that in mind. Older materials like clay tiles, slate and stone are often matched when work is done.

How fast the report arrives depends on the package: the Basic Survey within 48 hours, the Standard Survey in 24 to 48 hours and the Premium Survey on the same day.

Landlords, agents and block managers in Eastergate

For blocks of flats, a roof survey helps managing agents and residents’ management companies plan ahead. Recommendations are set out in order of urgency where relevant.

Shared roofs need a little more planning: we need access agreed with the building owner or managing agent. Mention it when you contact us and we will plan the visit with that in mind.

Different roofs, different checks

Lead-lined valley and parapet gutters

Some older roofs have a central valley running to the back and if it blocks, water can come indoors. We check it where it is safe to see.

Fascias and soffits

Some older soffits may contain asbestos. We flag any that could be so a specialist asbestos surveyor can check them before they’re disturbed.

Questions from Eastergate

Is Eastergate within the area you cover?

Yes, Eastergate is covered. We cover the whole of London and South East England, from towns to the smallest villages. Longer journeys are simply planned ahead of time.

Does being near the coast affect roofs in Eastergate?

Yes, coastal weather is harder on roofs: there is more wind, and more salt in the air. Exposed details like ridges, verges, flashings and metal fixings are the ones to watch, and Eastergate is within about 4 miles of the coast.

Are hidden gutters like valleys and box gutters included?

Yes, where it is safe to see them. We use the ground, windows, the roof space and the roof where it’s safe, and by drone where it is applicable.

Will you fly a drone over my roof?

Where it helps and it is safe, yes. Flights depend on the weather on the day and airspace rules, including flight restriction zones near airports. We hold a CAA Flyer ID and Operator ID.

How long have you been surveying roofs?

We have completed more than 5,000 surveys, across 20+ years of surveying roofs, with 98% customer satisfaction.

Is a Saturday or Sunday visit possible?

Yes. We survey on weekdays and at weekends. To find a day that suits, phone 07833 053749 or email us.

Will you photograph what you find?

Yes. Photos are part of every report, so you can see each point for yourself.

How it works

Once we’ve finished looking, we write up our findings as a written report with photos, sent to you by email. On timing, it usually takes roughly 1–2 hours for most homes, and longer where there are parapet, valley or box gutters to follow. For a village or hamlet like Eastergate, the journey is planned beforehand: let us know about narrow lanes, gates, long drives and where we can park. On the day, we inspect whatever is safely visible, inside and out.

  1. We ask about overflows, damp or leaks you’ve noticed.
  2. The eaves gutters, downpipes and fascias are looked at from the ground and vantage points.
  3. We check hidden gutters, like valleys and parapets, where it’s safe to see them.
  4. Where the loft can be reached safely, we check it for staining or damp.
  5. You get a photo-illustrated written report and recommendations.

Getting ready for the survey

  • Keep pets inside or away from the areas we are looking at
  • Move anything stored under the loft hatch
  • Mention any parking restrictions on your street

What we’re asked to look at in Eastergate

Valley, parapet and box gutters are frequently lined with lead or a sheet material. When a lining splits or an outlet blocks, the water can come inside as there’s nowhere harmless for it to go. Lead is also a target for theft.

Things that frequently lead to a survey include:

  • Choked outlets or hopper heads
  • Leaves and moss blocking gutters
  • Water backing up from a hidden gutter
  • Brackets that have dropped or snapped

For landlords with property near Barnham station, a roof report helps you deal with small faults before they turn into a call from a tenant.

Choosing a roof surveyor

  • What insurance they carry
  • What they will not be able to tell you
  • Whether VAT is added on top
  • How they’ll see the roof: from the ground, the loft, the roof or by drone

What to expect from a roof survey

Can I check my roof myself?

You can learn a lot from the ground. With binoculars, look for slipped or missing slates and tiles, gaps along the ridge and leaning chimneys. Please don’t climb up for a closer look.

After strong wind, take a look from the pavement or garden: broken slates or tiles in the garden, gaps along the ridge or loose lead are signs to note. Do not go up yourself.

Gutter surveys around Eastergate

Eastergate lies within about 4 miles of the sea, where sea air brings more salt and stronger wind than inland. Salt corrodes metal fixings and flashings, and wind lifts loose slates, tiles and ridge pieces, while driving rain finds any gap. Goodwood House, about 4.2 miles north-west, is one of the historic houses in the wider area around Eastergate. Older homes in the wider area frequently have features worth a closer look, like lead valleys, tall stacks and roofs that have been patched over the years.

For site and facilities teams at buildings such as Eastergate CofE Primary School, its roofs, gutters and any chimneys need the same checks as a house’s, just on a bigger scale. The streets around a church such as St George's Church are often among the oldest in a place, and if your home is one of the older ones nearby, the nails, lead and mortar on the roof may be wearing out even where the slates or tiles look fine.
