Gutter Survey in Great Saling
Gutter surveys across Great Saling, with over 20 years’ experience behind it. You get a clear report with photographs.
- Blocked outlets and hoppers
- Cracked or loose downpipes
- Fascia boards damaged by overflowing water
Do you need a gutter survey in Great Saling?
Some gutters may be too small, or have too few downpipes, for the roof they serve. An extension or extra roof slope can add water to an existing gutter, and a heavy downpour shows up the problem.
Typical things we are asked to look at include:
- Overflowing valley or parapet gutters
- Blocked outlets and hoppers
- Overflowing eaves gutters
- Cracked or loose downpipes
For an older house near a landmark such as Church of St James, its roof may have old fixings, lead flashings and chimneys that need a closer look.

About our gutter survey in Great Saling
We look at the rainwater system above ground level, from the gutters down to where the downpipes meet the ground. It is not a CCTV drain survey and we can’t see inside buried drains. Where water seems to be backing up from below ground, we’ll say so in the report, so you can get the drains checked separately. Problems above ground, from split hoppers to leaking downpipes, are photographed and noted. We survey downpipes, eaves gutters and outlets and hoppers, and people most often book us about water backing up from a hidden gutter and sagging gutters and loose brackets.
Older buildings in small places like Great Saling may be listed or in a conservation area. That can affect what materials can be used when work is done, so check with the council before planning anything. A roof report helps you plan work with that in mind. Older materials like clay tiles, slate and stone are often matched when work is done.
The Standard Survey adds moisture detection, a structural check and a follow-up consultation. The Premium Survey goes further, with thermal imaging, drone inspection where it applies, structural analysis and an in-person consultation.

Roof by roof
Plastic (uPVC) gutters
Older plastic gutters can turn brittle and crack. We check the joints, brackets and falls.
Box and secret gutters
A box gutter is built into the roof, often behind a parapet and when it overflows, water can get indoors. We inspect them as far as it’s safe to see them.
Gutter surveys in Great Saling: local notes
Clay tiles and timber weatherboarding mark out many of the older buildings in Essex, and lots of post-war and modern estates besides. Each of these coverings has its own weak points, from fixings and valleys to flashings, chimneys and gutters. An older home may be listed, or stand in a conservation area. Historic England’s list shows listed buildings, and the council can say whether a street is in a conservation area. In either case, a change of roofing material may need consent.

Questions from Great Saling
Can a landlord with a rental near Braintree station book a roof survey?
Yes, landlords and agents are among the people we work for. You can ring 07833 053749 or send us an email with the address and what you need.
Is my home in Great Saling listed or in a conservation area?
Start with Historic England’s list for listing and your council for conservation areas. Either can affect what roof work is allowed, so it is worth checking before planning any.
Do you check valley and parapet gutters?
Yes, where it’s safe to see them. We look from vantage points, the loft space and the roof itself where safe, and by drone where it is applicable.
What’s the best way to book?
To book, phone 07833 053749 or email us with the address, the type of property and what’s prompted the survey. We will confirm the price and agree a day with you.
When does the report arrive?
That depends on the survey you book: the Basic Survey report arrives within 48 hours, the Standard Survey in 24 to 48 hours and the Premium Survey the same day. Reports are sent by email.
How much time does the visit need?
It normally takes between one and two hours at a house, depending on how many gutter runs and downpipes there are. We’ll give you an idea when booking.
Do you take photos of the roof?
Yes, every report has them. Pictures sit next to the findings they show, so you can see what we mean.
How it works
The aim of the visit is simple: to see as much of the gutter as can safely be seen and record it clearly. Notes and photographs go into the written report. It normally takes roughly 1–2 hours at most homes, though large, tall or awkward roofs take more time. Around Great Saling, older homes can have small or awkward roof spaces, so tell us about the loft hatch and any ladder. We only go where it’s safe.
- We start with what you’ve noticed, such as damp or overflowing gutters.
- We walk round the building and check the gutters, downpipes and fascias from ground level.
- Valleys, parapets and box gutters are inspected where they can be seen safely.
- The roof space is checked for staining, where it can be reached safely.
- A written report with photos and recommendations follows.
Before the survey
- Gather any invoices or paperwork from past roof work
- Have any questions written down, so nothing gets missed
- Point out any leaks or damp patches

DIY checks: what’s safe
A lot can be seen from the ground. Binoculars help you spot slipped slates or tiles, gaps along the ridge and a leaning stack. Never climb onto the roof to look.
Keep a simple record: when leaks happen, ground-level photos and any past roof work. Share it with us when booking.
Tips that help
There’s plenty you can do without going near the roof. What helps most:
- Do not leave hidden gutters out of a clear-out
- Watch the gutters during heavy rain
- Check from the ground or a window, not a ladder
- Have overhanging branches cut back
Landlords and managing agents can keep the report with the building’s records and use it to plan upkeep. Photos make it easier to explain the work to owners, tenants or contractors.
Have your gutters cleared at least once a year or more frequently near trees. The best time is typically after the leaves have dropped. Clear gutters can carry water away as they should.
What a gutter survey does not cover
In fairness, there are limits to any roof survey:
- What’s behind fascias and inside walls
- Whether a material contains asbestos (a specialist asbestos surveyor’s job)
- Gutters out of sight from every safe vantage point
