Hill Brow homes and their roofs
Thatch survives on some older buildings in Hampshire’s villages. Older houses in the South East often have slate or clay tile roofs, while many later estates have concrete tiles. On roofs like these, good slates or tiles can outlast the nails, battens, lead and mortar around them. There are about 500,000 buildings on England’s list of listed buildings, and around 10,000 conservation areas. If your home is listed, changes that affect its special interest need listed building consent, and in a conservation area re-roofing in different materials may need permission, so the council is the place to ask.
If yours is one of the older homes in the streets near Rake Mission Church, the nails, lead and mortar on the roof may be wearing out even where the slates or tiles look fine. If you own a rental within reach of Liss station, a roof report helps you deal with small faults before they turn into a call from a tenant. If you look after a building like Liss Junior School, large buildings have long gutter runs and big roofs that need checking like any other.

How a gutter survey works in Hill Brow
We survey gutters and rainwater systems in Hill Brow and right across London and the South East. We inspect everything we can see safely, from ground level, from windows and from the roof space. Time on site typically takes about one to two hours on an ordinary house, with bigger or more complicated roofs taking longer. Afterwards, you get a written report with photos and recommendations. We are often asked to look into choked outlets or hopper heads and gutters overflowing in heavy rain, on eaves gutters, outlets and hoppers and parapet and box gutters.
In a small place like Hill Brow, many roofs stand in the open, which is hard on ridges, chimneys, flashings and gutters. Damp in old walls is slow to dry, so a small leak can do a lot of harm. A written report sets out what to deal with and in what order. On exposed older roofs, chimneys and lead flashings are often the first to give way.
If any part of the gutter couldn’t be seen safely, we say so in the report. That way, it’s clear what was covered and what wasn’t.

Common questions in Hill Brow
Does a conservation area affect roof work in Hill Brow?
We cannot confirm that for you, but Historic England’s list and your council can. Both listing and conservation areas can limit changes of roofing material, and councils can also use Article 4 directions.
Do you cover smaller places like Hill Brow?
Yes. Hill Brow is within the area we cover, which takes in towns, villages and rural addresses. We work right across London and the South East. Just mention lanes, gates or anything else about the route when you book.
Is this a RICS survey?
No. Our survey is a roof survey, not a RICS Level 2 or Level 3 survey of the whole building. It focuses on the roof and can sit alongside a RICS survey.
What does a gutter survey cost?
Prices start from £150, including VAT. The size of the property and the access affect the price. To get a price, call 07833 053749 or email us.
Can you survey a shared roof?
Yes, once access has been agreed. The roof of a block or converted house is often shared, so we need permission from whoever owns or manages the building. We inspect only the parts we’re allowed to reach.
How experienced are you?
We’ve completed more than 5,000 surveys, over more than 20 years, with 98% customer satisfaction.
Do you test soffits or gutters for asbestos?
No. We don’t test for asbestos. Where gutters, downpipes or soffits could be asbestos cement, we flag them so a specialist asbestos surveyor can check before any work.
What a gutter survey does not cover
We only report what can safely be seen on the day, so there are some things a survey can’t cover:
- Confirming asbestos in older rainwater goods
- Rot or damp concealed behind fascias or inside walls
- Hidden sections we can’t view safely
If you’re not sure which survey you need, call 07833 053749 or send us an email and we will give you a straight answer before booking. What our survey covers.
Roof types and parts we check
- Eaves gutters
- Fascias and soffits
- Valley gutters
- Parapet and box gutters
- Downpipes
- Outlets and hoppers
What happens if roof problems are left?
Small gutter faults rarely fix themselves. Each heavy rain puts more water where it shouldn’t be, on walls, timber and sometimes inside. Getting it surveyed now shows what needs attention first. For older village homes like those around Hill Brow, the right replacement materials aren’t always easy to find quickly. That is one more reason to find defects before they become urgent.
The cost of a survey depends on the roof: how big it is, how high it is, the number of separate roofs and how safely it can be seen. Our price is from £150, including VAT.

Practical tips
You don’t need to be a roofer to help. Here’s what helps most:
- Get the gutters cleaned out every year
- Have overhanging branches cut back
- Note any damp stains below the gutters
- Ask for valleys and parapet gutters to be cleared too
Questions about the report are welcome. The Standard Survey includes a follow-up consultation and the Premium Survey comes with an in-person one.
Get the gutters cleared every year or more often near trees. Late autumn, after the leaves have fallen, is a sensible time. Clean gutters can do their job.
What affects the price in Hill Brow
Survey packages start from £150, including VAT. What you pay for your roof depends on:
- The number of roofs, including extensions and garages
- Whether it is a home or a commercial building
- How tall the building is and how easy the roof is to see
- How big the roof is
Bigger, taller and commercial roofs take more time to survey, so they’re priced to match. The price is confirmed before you book.
Booking your survey
To price your survey accurately, we will ask about:
- The property’s address and postcode
- Any deadline, like an exchange date
- Anything about access we should know
- Why you want a survey: buying, a leak, a storm or new work

What else we do in Hill Brow
What happens on the day
Expect us to ask a few questions before we start, about the roof’s history, any leaks and past repairs. Then the inspection itself takes roughly 1–2 hours for most homes, and longer where there are parapet, valley or box gutters to follow. Somewhere like Hill Brow needs a little journey planning: let us know about lanes, gates and parking. On the day, we inspect whatever is safely visible, inside and out.
- You tell us where you’ve seen overflows, drips or damp.
- The eaves gutters, downpipes and fascias are checked from ground level and windows.
- We look at hidden gutters as far as safe access allows.
- Where it’s safe, we check the loft for signs of water.
- You receive a report with photos and recommendations.
Before the survey
- Keep pets inside or away from the areas we’re looking at
- Dig out any old roof reports or invoices
- Let us know about any leaks, stains or damp patches you know of
Getting a price
We survey roofs on any day of the week. To arrange a day that suits you, phone 07833 053749 or drop us an email.
Advice
Can I check my roof myself?
Your own check is a good start, but it isn’t a survey. From the ground, valleys, flashings and the backs of chimneys are frequently out of sight.
Inside, the loft is a good place to look, with care. Use a torch and stay on the joists or boards, and look for staining, damp timber or daylight coming through.
