Roofs, chimneys and gutters in Purbrook
Purbrook lies within about 2 miles of the sea, and being near the sea means more wind and salt than a roof inland would face. Salt corrodes metal fixings and flashings, and wind lifts loose slates, tiles and ridge pieces, and driving rain gets into whatever gap is left. The wider area around Purbrook has a long history of building, with Warblington Castle about 3.3 miles south-east. Period homes nearby can have lead valleys, tall chimneys and a patchwork of past repairs, and any change of roofing material on a listed home needs checking with the council first.
If you own a rental within reach of Bedhampton station, a dated record of the roof is useful when planning maintenance across a let. For an older house near a landmark like Church of St John, its chimney, valleys and lead work are likely to be the parts that need attention first.
Purbrook is about 2 miles west of Havant, in Hampshire. We carry out gutter surveys in Purbrook for houses, flats, blocks and commercial buildings. We cover towns and villages across Hampshire, large and small.

Nearby, we also carry out gutter surveys in Purbrook Heath (1 mile west), Widley (1 mile south-west), Waterlooville (1 mile north), Farlington (2 miles south) and Bedhampton (2 miles south-east). Larger places within reach include Gosport (7 miles south-west), Eastleigh (15 miles north-west), Fareham (7 miles west), Horndean (3 miles north), Hedge End (12 miles west) and Petersfield (10 miles north-east).

About our gutter survey in Purbrook
Owners get in touch after seeing an overflow, finding damp or planning ahead for winter. Landlords and managing agents use it to plan maintenance, and some buyers want the rainwater system checked before exchange. The survey and report follow the same steps whatever the reason, with photos and written recommendations. We survey on weekdays and at weekends. If you’ve noticed cracked or loose downpipes and water backing up from a hidden gutter, we can find out what’s behind it, on downpipes, valley gutters and eaves gutters alike.
Most homes in a town like Purbrook are houses, so the roof is typically the owner’s to look after. A slipped tile or blocked gutter costs far less to sort than the damp it causes later. A roof report gives you a list of what needs doing and how soon. The photographs let you see the parts of the roof you cannot get to.
Findings are set out part by part, from the coverings down to the gutters. You’ll see the good as well as the bad.

How we price gutter surveys
Our packages start from £150, including VAT. The price for your roof depends on:
- The roof’s overall size
- The height of the building and how the roof can be seen safely
- Extensions, dormers and garages with roofs of their own
- Commercial roofs and larger buildings
The cost of a survey depends on the roof: its size, its height, how many sections it has and how it can be reached and seen safely. Our price is from £150, including VAT.
Booking your survey
Getting the details right at the start saves time. It helps to include:
- Your timetable, like an exchange date

Purbrook: your questions answered
Is the coastal weather around Purbrook hard on roofs?
Often, yes. Within about 2 miles of the sea, as Purbrook is, metal fixings wear faster and gales find any loose ridge or slate.
Does a conservation area affect roof work in Purbrook?
The council and Historic England’s list are the places to check. It’s worth checking before planning roof work, as both can affect what’s allowed.
How long will you be on site?
It normally takes about 1–2 hours for most homes, and longer where there are parapet, valley or box gutters to follow. You’ll know roughly how long when we arrange the visit.
Is it a structural engineer’s report?
No. We’re roof surveyors, not structural engineers. We’ll recommend an engineer if we see signs that call for one.
Do you cover Purbrook for gutter surveys?
Yes. We survey roofs across London and South East England, and that includes Purbrook.
Can a gutter survey explain damp on my walls?
Leaking gutters and downpipes are a common cause of damp walls, and the survey looks for that. If the evidence points elsewhere, we will say so, based on what we can see.
Does someone need to be in?
Not always. If we only need the outside, we can agree that in advance, but anything inside needs someone there to give access.
Do you need a gutter survey in Purbrook?
Moss grows on many tiled and slate roofs, and rain washes it down into the gutters. Mixed with grit from the roof, it settles as silt that slows the flow and lets weeds take root.
We’re often asked to look at:
- Leaves and moss blocking gutters
- Leaks at the gutter joints
- Hoppers and outlets full of debris
- Gutters that have fallen out of line
Anyone responsible for a site like Purbrook Junior School will know that long gutter runs and wide roofs on a building that size are worth checking on a regular cycle.
Before you book anyone
- What the survey will not cover
- How they’ll see the roof: from ground level, the loft, the roof or by drone
- Their insurance cover
- What follow-up you get after the report
The survey, step by step
A survey visit follows a simple order: we listen to what’s been worrying you, look at the roof from every safe viewpoint, photograph what we find and make notes for the report. It normally takes roughly 1–2 hours at a typical home; commercial roofs usually need 3–4 hours. A typical visit in Purbrook begins with the street side of the roof and then moves round the building. The back garden is often where extensions, dormers and rear slopes are best seen. The loft comes next, where there’s safe access.
- You let us know where you’ve seen overflows, drips or damp.
- We walk round the building and check the gutters, downpipes and fascias from ground level.
- We look at hidden gutters as far as safe access allows.
- Where it’s safe, we check the loft for signs of water.
- A report with photos and recommendations follows.
Before the survey
- Dig out any old roof reports or invoices
- Clear the way to the loft hatch
- Jot down any questions you want answered

Advice
What you can safely check yourself
After strong wind, take a look from the pavement or garden: pieces of tile or slate on the ground, a gap in the ridge or a lifted flashing are all worth noting. Leave anything above ground level to a survey.
What you can’t do safely is get up close. Slates, tiles, flat roofs and rooflights can give way, and falls from height are serious. That part is for a survey.
Roof by roof
Cast iron gutters
Cast iron tends to fail at the joints and fixings. We note corrosion, cracks and leaking joints where they can be seen.
Lead-lined valley and parapet gutters
We look at the lining, the joints and the outlets where it’s safe to see them. Lead is also a target for theft.
What a gutter survey does not cover
Our findings are based on what we can see safely on the day, so there are some things a survey can’t cover:
- Rot or damp concealed behind fascias or inside walls
- What’s hidden inside a downpipe
- Whether a material contains asbestos (a specialist asbestos surveyor’s job)
Not sure which survey suits your roof? You can phone 07833 053749 or email us and we’ll tell you before you book. What our survey covers.
