Gutter survey in Hoyle: what you get
Owners get in touch after seeing an overflow, finding damp or planning ahead for winter. Landlords and managing agents use the report to plan upkeep, and some buyers want the rainwater system checked before exchange. Whoever books, we inspect and report in the same way, with photographs and written recommendations. We survey on weekdays and at weekends. We survey eaves gutters, fascias and soffits and downpipes, and people most often book us about leaves and moss blocking gutters and choked outlets or hopper heads.
Some older homes in villages like Hoyle are listed or in a conservation area. If yours is, re-roofing in different materials may need consent, so the council is the place to check. Knowing the roof’s condition helps you plan ahead with that in mind. Older materials like clay tiles, slate and stone are frequently matched when work is done.
Findings are set out part by part, from the coverings down to the gutters. You’ll see the good as well as the bad.

Different roofs, different checks
Aluminium and other metal gutters
Joints and fixings are the weak points on metal gutters. We record any corrosion or leaks we see.
Plastic (uPVC) gutters
On plastic systems, slipped joints are one of the most common faults. We record each one we can see.
When you need someone else
Before you book, it is worth knowing what a survey will not do:
- Parts of gutters that can’t be seen safely
- Asbestos testing of old gutters, downpipes or soffits
- What’s behind fascias and inside walls
If in doubt, ring 07833 053749 or drop us an email and we’ll recommend the right survey. The full list of what we check.
What we look at
- Outlets and hoppers
- Downpipes
- Parapet and box gutters
- Eaves gutters
- Fascias and soffits
- Valley gutters
Tips that help
A survey works best with a little help from you, before and after. Some tips:
- Leave gutter checks at height to someone equipped for it
- Watch ceilings under valley gutters for fresh marks
- Watch the gutters during heavy rain
- Book gutter clearing once a year, more often near trees
The report comes with photos and clear written recommendations. You can pass it to whoever you choose to do the work so they know what needs doing.
Don’t forget valley, parapet and box gutters. They collect leaves and silt just like eaves gutters but they’re much harder to spot, so ask for them to be included when gutters are cleared.

Gutter surveys around Hoyle
The wider area around Hoyle has a long history of building, with Cowdray House about 2.2 miles north-west. Period homes nearby can have lead valleys, tall chimneys and a patchwork of past repairs, and any change of roofing material on a listed home needs checking with the council first. Older houses across Sussex frequently have handmade clay tiles, and many have tile-hanging on their upper walls. Horsham stone slab roofs survive on some old Sussex buildings. Whichever you have, the details that tend to fail before the covering itself get the closest look.
If you live in an older home near The Parish Church of St James, its roof may have old fixings, lead flashings and chimneys that need a closer look. For site and facilities teams at buildings such as Midhurst Rother College, a written record of a large roof helps plan work for the holidays rather than in term time.

How the survey works
When we arrive, we start by asking what you’ve noticed and what you’d like to know. We then inspect everything that can safely be seen. Most surveys take between one and two hours for most houses; commercial roofs usually need 3–4 hours. In a small place like Hoyle, access is normally the main thing to plan. Let us know about outbuildings, past repairs and any leaks you’ve noticed. Weekday and weekend visits are available.
- We start by hearing about any drips, overflows or damp patches.
- We look along the gutters, downpipes and fascias from the ground and from windows.
- We check hidden gutters, like valleys and parapets, where it is safe to see them.
- Where the loft can be reached safely, we check it for staining or damp.
- We send a written report with photos and clear recommendations.
Preparing for the visit
- Have any paperwork from past roof work to hand
- Buyers: confirm access with the estate agent or seller
- Tell us about any leaks, stains or damp patches you know of

What affects the cost of gutter surveys
A few things affect what a survey costs:
- The number of roofs, including extensions and garages
- Basic, Standard or Premium
- How complicated the roof is, with its valleys, chimneys and parapets
- Height and safe access
Every price we give includes VAT, and the written report is part of the package. Gutter survey starts from £150, including VAT. Size, height and access decide where your roof falls.
What we need to know
There’s no need for technical words. Just tell us:
- Pictures from the garden or a window, if you have them
- Your timetable, such as an exchange date
- What made you get in touch
- Where water is showing inside, if it is
You can call us seven days a week. To book or ask a question, call 07833 053749 or drop us an email.
Checking the roof from ground level
After heavy rain, check ceilings and the tops of walls for new stains. Photograph them and note the date, as it helps a surveyor trace the cause.
You can learn a lot from ground level. Binoculars help you spot slipped slates or tiles, gaps along the ridge and a leaning stack. Please don’t climb up for a closer look.
